Basketball Legend
Having achieved every imaginable goal from a player's perspective, Earvin "Magic" Johnson embarked on another basketball-related ambition in 1994 when he began his first year as the Lakers' vice president. Magic's illustrious playing career, which consisted of hundreds of highlights, is most accurately summarized in a single word – winner. He was the guiding force behind championship-winning teams at every conceivable level including high school, college and professional. He was also on a team that captured an Olympic Gold Medal. During his 12-year NBA career, he led the Lakers to five NBA championships (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988) and nine appearances in the NBA Finals. He was named the NBA's "Most Valuable Player" on three occasions (1987, 1989 and 1990), NBA Finals MVP three times (1980, 1982 and 1987), earned All-NBA First Team honors nine times, participated in 11 All-Star Games and concluded his career as the league's all-time assist leader. After announcing his retirement from the NBA on November 7, 1991, due to the HIV virus, Magic's immense popularity resulted in his being voted as a starter in the 1992 All-Star Game, during which he promptly earned MVP honors. Later that year, he became a member of the 1992 United States gold-medal winning Olympic basketball team in Barcelona. He retired ranked among the Lakers' all-time leaders in virtually every statistical category, averaging 19.7 points, 11.4 assists and 7.3 rebounds in 874 career regular season contests.

He has made it to 42. He has made it to 260 pounds. He has made it to CEO. He has made it to father-of-three. He has made it to big-brother-of-Kobe. He has made it to seven rings. He has made it to 10 years. "A lot of people thought I would be dead," Earvin "Magic" Johnson says of his anniversary. Magic Johnson's retirement 10 years ago stunned the world, but it likely hit closest to home for so many athletes who have enjoyed the spoils of their success. They thought he had the plague, but today he has a pickup basketball game to play. They treated him like a leper, but today they watch movies in his theatre. They thought he would whither away, but today his shirt size is XXXL. They remember Nov. 7, 1991, like it was last Thursday. They remember where they were when they heard that sickening phrase: HIV. They remember weeping. They remember rationalizing. They remember thinking, "He must be gay." They remember thinking he'll be gone in two years. They remember thinking he'll shrivel up and deteriorate. Right in front of them. And they know who they are. Michael Jordan. Larry Bird. Pat Riley. Arsenio Hall. Isiah Thomas.

After finding glory on the basketball court, he has gone on to success in the business world Click here to read Magic's advice to teens By Seth Rubinroit, 13, Malibu HS K obe Bryant. Jerry West. Wilt Chamberlain. These are all great Laker basketball players, but Magic Johnson has had the biggest impact on Los Angeles. Even by today’s standards, Magic Johnson is clearly an amazing basketball player. He won the Most Valuable Player Award three times, led the Lakers to five NBA championships, made the All-Star team 12 times, and retired with the career assists record. At 6’9", Magic dominated point guards who were usually 6’1" to 6’3". Magic changed the game with his amazing behind-the-back passes, and his ability to light up the arena with his famous smile. Magic’s charismatic playing style brought the Lakers into the Showtime era, and into prime-time television. But Magic is more than just a great basketball player. He is an icon. People look up to Magic and can relate to him.

In 1983, the San Leandro location had 1,500 members and eight full-time employees. Today, the 45,000 sq ft., club is nine times its original size and is one of only six Magic Johnson Sport Clubs in the 24 Hour Fitness family. "This club holds an important place in the hearts of the 24 Hour Fitness family," said Mark S. Mastrov, chairman and CEO, 24 Hour Fitness. The decision to retire was not entirely his. The strength to return was. From: By: Anni Layne Perhaps a remote control airplane would provide a better analogy for the career path of Earvin "Magic" Johnson. A remote control fighter jet in the hands of a hyperactive child, that is. Undoubtedly one of the most celebrated athletes of our time, Magic Johnson defined basketball for generations of children before suddenly and sadly announcing that he had tested positive for the HIV virus and had decided to retire from the game. He was not expected to return to basketball. Thankfully, Magic Johnson has seldom given heed to other people's expectations. The story of his return to basketball, swift exit, subsequent return, and final departure demonstrates how devotion, talent, and drive can escort people back to the place where they belong and do it against all odds. The legend of Magic Johnson begins in 1979, when his Michigan State Spartans defeated Larry Bird's Indiana State team to win the NCAA title. MVP and Number One draft pick, Johnson became the highest paid rookie ever in the history of basketball when he hooked a 5-year deal the Golden State Lakers for $500,000 a year. The Reagan era served Magic well. By 1988, Johnson had led his team to three NBA Championships and two consecutive World Championships. Then, on April 15, 1991, the three-time league MVP truly etched his legend into stone by surmounting Oscar Robinson with the highest number of assists ever recorded. He was at the top of his game.

and Casey Morse '00 Earvin Johnson didn't give a lecture last Thursday at Cornell. Instead, the basketball legend, AIDS activist and businessman gave some memories to a largely student audience of 2,000 who packed Bailey Hall and gave him a standing ovation when he entered. Sure, "Magic" Johnson helped the Los Angeles Lakers to five National Basketball Association championships and nine NBA finals appearances. Going one-on-one against the Isaiah Thomases, Moses Malones, Charles Barkleys, Larry Birds and Michael Jordans of his era, Johnson set a high standard of athletic excellence. But on Nov. 7, 1991, the high-flying, championship world of Magic seemed to come crashing down. "That was the hardest day of my life," Johnson told the sold-out Bailey Hall crowd Thursday evening. His doctor had summoned him to his office to give him some chilling news: Johnson had been diagnosed as being HIV positive. "After I got myself off the ground, I decided to get a positive attitude. There would be no stress in my life, I would take the medicine and do what the doctor told me to do," recalled Johnson.

Executive summary: Lakers star, AIDS spokesman Earvin Johnson Jr. grew up with nine siblings, but Junior was the one who usually slept with his basketball. He dribbled it on errands to the store, and developed into a real player. A local sportswriter dubbed him "Magic" after watching Johnson dominate a high school game. His mother disapproved, and thought the nickname sounded blasphemous. Johnson had an uncanny ability to see plays before they develop, passing the ball cross-court to players who weren't there yet, but would be by the time the ball arrived. The term "triple double" (for a player whose points, rebounds, and assists reach double digits in a single game) was coined largely for Magic Johnson, who did it routinely. He played guard, center, and forward. Johnson led his high school to the state championship, then went to Michigan State and led the Spartans to the 1978-79 national championship in his sophomore season. After that, he dropped out and went pro, leading the L.A. Lakers to the NBA championship in his rookie season, and winning the Most Valuable Player award for the playoffs. In his second season, Johnson feuded with the Lakers' coach
