A lot of times growing up you don't want to eat your green beans, and your spinach, and all the other healthy things that you should eat. So, I would encourage young people to do that. And get outside! What is hurting young people today is that video games are killing us because we don't get outside like we used to.

I am a businessman. This is what I do each and every day. I love it. I love coming to work. I never have a bad day.
Earvin Magic Johnson

I came back to basketball one other time because I wanted to go out my way. So I finished it. Fellow basketball players were very receptive. I played in the All-Star game-had a wonderful game and got the MVP. So I think guys said, 'OK, he's OK.' Because everyone thought I was going to die, like a year later. And so they didn't know.

I guess when people ask what is the biggest transition to the NBA from college, it is definitely defense and the mental part. And the mental part I was ready for but the defense part I wasn't because the next night (George) Gervin had 40 on me, Paul Westphal the next night had 38 on me. So defensively I was not ready but mentally I was ready.

Magic Johnson finds success in business world
By Earle Eldridge, USA TODAY LOS ANGELES Behind big oak doors on the seventh floor of an office complex here, 15 workers screen calls, complete reports, ponder new deals and hope to get a minute or two with the boss. The boss is basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The business is a growing empire with a goal of partnering with major corporations to bring entertainment, retailing, housing and jobs to urban and ethnically diverse communities. The empire already includes more than 30 Burger Kings and a T.G.I. Friday's restaurants, 72 Starbucks coffee shops, six Loews movie theaters, eight 24 Hour Fitness centers and nine residential and commercial real estate ventures. The enterprises are spread across the country, including in New York, Chicago, Miami, San Diego, Milwaukee, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Cleveland, Los Angeles and suburban Washington. They have created more than 10,000 jobs, mostly for minorities, since the first was launched in 1993. Johnson works with cities eager to revitalize near-downtown neighborhoods with sports arenas, shopping complexes and residential enclaves and with corporations eager to get one up on the competition by partnering their brand with the charisma of Magic Johnson.

http://www.daytondragons.com/staff/magic.html
EARVIN "MAGIC" JOHNSON Earvin Johnson was born in Lansing, Michigan, the sixth of ten children. To support the large family, his father worked night jobs after finishing his shift at a General Motors plant. When Earvin Senior had free time, he would watch basketball on television with Junior, and give him advice on strategy. The younger Johnson soon became obsessed with the game, and most days would find him on the basketball court by 7:30 a.m. Even a trip to the store became another opportunity to practice. He would dribble with his right hand on the way there and with his left on the way back.
Neighbors called Johnson "June Bug" because he was always hopping around the court, but in his 15th year—after a game in which he poured in 36 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, and made 16 assists—a sportswriter changed that nickname forever. Earvin became "Magic". In all four of his high school years, he was selected as part of the Michigan All-Star team, and in his senior year, he led his Everett High School team to the Class A championship. After graduation, Johnson moved on to Michigan State University, and as a freshman, he helped the Spartans win the 1977-78 Big Ten Championship. The following year, he led his team to the N.C.A.A. Championship game, a highly anticipated match up with College Player of the Year Larry Bird. Johnson's team won convincingly, and he was named Most Valuable Player in the N.C.A.A. Final Four series.
In 1979, after his sophomore championship year, Johnson made himself available for the professional draft and was the first player picked. He went to the Los Angeles Lakers, a mediocre team at the time. Magic's exuberance and tremendous skill helped transform the Lakers into contenders. He was an All-Star as a rookie, and helped guide the Lakers to their first championship since 1972. Even though Bird was chosen N.B.A. Rookie of the Year, Johnson was named Finals M.V.P. and took home the championship ring.

Few athletes are truly unique, changing the way their sport is played with their singular skills. Earvin "Magic" Johnson was one of them. Johnson accomplished virtually everything a player could dream of during his 13-year NBA career, all of which was spent with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a member of five championship teams. He won the Most Valuable Player Award and the Finals MVP Award three times each. He was a 12-time All-Star and a nine-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He surpassed Robertson's career assists record, a mark he later relinquished to John Stockton. He won a gold medal with the original Dream Team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.

He stunned the world during the 1991-1992 season with his announcement of his retirement before the season began, due to testing positive to the HIV Virus. Magic recently marked the 10th anniversary of telling the world that he had HIV. Thank goodness he is still doing well and shows no sign of slowing down or developing AIDS. He also made a failed comeback attempt and took over the Lakers as coach. In 1996 he made his return, looking like his old self again and leading the Lakers into the playoffs. Unfortunately, he retired again at the end of the year. Magic was named to the All-NBA Interview team in 1996 due in large part to the media hype associated with his return. As a last honor, before the Hall of Fame, Magic Johnson was named one of the 50 Greatest NBA Players of all Time. He was named to the Basketball Hall of Fame with the class of 2002. In his retirement, Magic spends time with his wife Cookie and his son Earvin III.

Brian J. Rybarczyk
"It's not going to happen to me. And I'm here saying that it can happen to anybody, even me, Magic Johnson." These words were spoken by basketball hall-of-famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson at a press conference on November 7, 1991, to the shock of an entire nation. Johnson represents one of the first sports celebrities to publicly announce his HIV-seropositive status. A star basketball player who is HIV positive? How could this have happened? In 1992, Magic played in the NBA All-Star Game and on the gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic basketball team. He served as head coach of the Lakers in 1994 and returned as a player on the team in 1996, but decided it was time to retire and channel his energies into other arenas outside of basketball. Currently, Johnson is CEO of his own business, Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE). He also has established the Magic Johnson Foundation, which helps inner-city communities deal with issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and raises funds for research and prevention efforts. His time is also spent with his wife and three children. Johnson exercises regularly and eats a healthy diet. He currently does not experience any of the symptoms associated with HIV infection or AIDS.

Magic Johnson
Athlete Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jr. (born August 14, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan) is an American professional basketball star who played for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1980s and early 1990s. Playing point guard, he led the Lakers to five NBA championships (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988), as well as four other NBA Finals appearances. He also led Michigan State University to the NCAA title in 1979 against arch-rival Larry Bird's Indiana State University. Johnson is also the only NBA rookie to win the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award (1980). He is one of only four players to win NCAA and NBA championships in consecutive years. Texas Looking to adopt? Pregnant? Johnson earned the nickname "Magic" in high school, both for his flamboyant passing style and winning ways. While not known as an exceptional scorer, Magic excelled in all other facets of the game. In different periods of his career, he led the league in assists and steals. He led the Lakers in scoring three times (1987, 1989, 1990) and in rebounding twice (1982, 1983). His unselfish playmaking and dazzling no-look passes on the fast break ushered in the "Showtime" era of Laker basketball, which dominated the eighties. Although he and Bird eventually became the best of friends off the court, they revived the heated Lakers-Celtics rivalry, and drew millions of new fans to the NBA.
