All About Me
This is for NBA basketball. You won't see talk about college basketball unless it's about their pro potential. You won't read about slap shots, screen passes or high jumps. What's going on in your state, country, or continent will be ignored. You might find an article about Curtis Borchardt before you find one on Curtis Martin. This will be about the NBA and any various topics related to the NBA and that is all. Unless of course I feel like writing about something else.

I loathe mid-season award columns, specifically from fantasy basketball columnists. All they do is tell you who is playing well – which any serious fantasy basketball player already knows. “Kevin Garnett is having a good season? Oh darn, surprisingly someone in my league already has him.” It's almost like telling you that Tyra Banks is hot and you should try to hook up with her.
However, feeling obliged to give some type of mid-season column, here are my “All-Pleasant Surprise” and “All-Disappointment” teams along with explanation of how you could have better predicted their performances before your fantasy basketball draft.

Wizards Kick Back at Spurs
Jamison Scores Season-High 35 Points: Wizards 95, Spurs 87
By Michael Lee Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, February 10, 2005; Page D01 Proving that he wasn't satisfied with making his first all-star team and that the Washington Wizards have more than Gilbert Arenas to offer in the fourth quarter forward Antawn Jamison responded with his best game in a Wizards uniform last night. On a night when Arenas struggled with his shooting, Jamison carried the load, scoring 14 of his season-high 35 points in the final period as the Wizards beat the San Antonio Spurs, 95-87, last night at MCI Center. "We all know our roles," said Jamison, who added 11 rebounds to record his 19th double-double of the season. "If Coach says, 'Let's see what Gilbert can do, we'll do that.' Tonight, I was feeling it a little bit."
Gilbert Arenas scores on a layup to put the Wizards ahead of the Spurs 53-52 in the 3rd quarter, a lead they did not relinquish.

HEELS HOME HEEL HOLLA'GRAM Who's the better player now? Vince or Antawn? A scout once said: "When Vince Carter was coming out, and we were all doing our background research, North Carolina coaches told us that Antawn Jamison is going to be a better player because Carter didn't work hard. For four years, we all thought they were crazy." The draft-day trade of Vince Carter, left, and Antawn Jamison has started to swing in the Warriors' favor. Now, we see they were probably right. We won't know for sure until their careers are over but look at the stats side by side and you might be surprised. For the first few years, Golden State was getting the bad rap. The Raptors made the playoffs, Vince was the slam-dunk champ and air apparent to the endorsement king. Antawn suffered through different injuries and kept on believing that someday he would see the same success. But now, it appears that the roles are reversing. Carter has been injury prone over the last three years and his Raptors are basically self-imploding. While Antawn has been healthy and his Warriors narrowly missed the playoffs this past year but is definitely on the rise. He is averaging 22 points, seven rebounds and two assists per game.

It’s that time of year in a long, grueling 82 game regular season schedule where player injuries start to mount up and players’ bodies break down. All of the running, jumping, falling, hard fouls, practicing and game play begin to take its toll. The Wizards are feeling the full effect of this phenomenon. Point blank: This team is physically, mentally and emotionally whipped right now. The team has lost seven out of the last ten games and the schedule now calls for an absolutely killer stretch of games on the road.
To their credit, the Wiz have endured a season full of injuries and illnesses, and have found a way to battle through them and maintain the third best record in the Eastern Conference. But this is different, EVERYONE needs some rest and relaxation - or better yet, rest and recuperation. Fortunately for the team, they haven’t had a game since the setback in New York on Tuesday and won’t play again until Sunday. In effect, the team has had about four days to lick their wounds and prepare for the toughest stretch on the schedule this year. Hopefully we will see a rejuvenated and healthier squad focused solely on grabbing home court for the opening round of the playoffs.
Even in adversity, there is always something to be thankful for. For starters, both Juan Dixon and Jared Jeffries have returned to the line-up after an extended absence. Dixon returned to action on Saturday night after missing five games due to a sprained right ankle which he suffered in Houston shortly before the All-Star break. During his leave, scoring from the bench was woeful. After he gets his game legs back, he should resume his role as the team’s top reserve playmaker. “I’m going to try my best to get back, to be healthy,” said Dixon. “We banged up, man. We hurting. But guys that are hurt got to suck it up somehow. We’ve got to make this push.”
