Jackson left his mark on area softball
Column by St. Clair Murraine
DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

Slowly the words began to come. Moriya Smith repeatedly tried to compose himself. One weekend, he watched his uncle struggle before he overcame a dizzy spell while sitting in the bleachers at a softball game. Two weekends later, Smith was having flashbacks. Former FAMU pitcher/infielder Robert Jackson Jr. was on the mound pitching in a softball tournament in Huntsville, Ala. Jackson complained about feeling dizzy. "The first thing I thought was, 'Not again,"' said Smith, who was playing first base. "What happened with my uncle was so close and that was the first thing I thought about. I was there thinking (Jackson) was going to come through." It didn't matter any more that Smith and Jackson were playing a game well past midnight, trying to help their team advance in the tournament. Smith was too worried after seeing Jackson collapse.

OVERVIEW
Built like a tight end, Jackson has the foot speed to match up with any cornerback at any level of football. His size makes him almost impossible to match up with in one-on-one situations and is always a threat to turn a play into a touchdown, either as a receiver or a return specialist. The gifted athlete also played on the school's basketball team the last two seasons. Jackson earned honorable mention all-state from the Rocky Mountain News as a senior at Widefield High School. He added first-team all-conference and all-area honors as he ranked third in the state (class 4A) in receptions (52), and also tallied 697 receiving yards with 13 touchdowns. In 2003, Jackson received national attention, earning All-America honors as he shattered school single-season records with 1,462 yards and 21 touchdowns on 66 receptions. His 1,462 yards surpassed the previous mark of 1,044 yards by Cedric Tillman in 1988. His 21 scoring grabs topped the old mark of 11, shared by Dillan Micus (1998) and Keith Grable (1999). Vincent also returned 19 punts for 166 yards (8.7 average) and 13 kickoffs for 321 yards (24.7 average). His 1,949 all-purpose yards broke the school record of 1,531 by Adam Matthews in 2002.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The New Jersey Nets on Tuesday rescinded their trade with the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim and acquired forward Marc Jackson from Philadelphia COMMENTARY Abdur-Rahim, Johnson just the biggest names kept waiting

The Abdur-Rahim trade was put on hold last week after the nine-year veteran failed a physical. The Nets didn't disclose the nature of the medical problem, but team president Rod Thorn said it was something neither Abdur-Rahim nor the Trail Blazers knew about. The Nets had planned to use their trade exception to acquire the 29-year-old Abdur-Rahim, who has averaged 19.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in nine years with Vancouver, Atlanta and Portland. With the trade exception scheduled to expire at midnight Tuesday, New Jersey was forced to scramble to make a deal. Advertisement "We had a list of guys we had interest in, and he was at the top of our list," Thorn said. "We thought he would fit in very well with us."
