Releases DALLAS MAVS MAKE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES WORK FOR WIN Cedric Henderson Shoots Three-Pointer at Buzzer to Send Game into Overtime Long Beach , Calif. – The Memphis Grizzlies improved their record to 3-2 in a close game against the Dallas Mavericks B Squad on Thursday. The Mavs took a five-point lead to end the first quarter, but the Grizzlies tied the game at 44 to start the third. The battle for the W continued into the third with a tie at 65. Late in the fourth, a sudden scramble ensued for a loose ball. After Maverick Mike Jones recovered it and made the pass to McNeese State 's Tierre Brown, a slam dunk by Andy Ellis seemed to seal Dallas ' fate. With little time left on the clock the crowd thought the Mavs had the win, until Grizzlies' Cedric Henderson got off a three-point shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. With the game tied at 92, Kris Lang and Jaron Brown started the Grizzlies off with two, Andre Emmett added five and the Grizzlies ended the game with a 101-96 victory. Texas Tech's Andre Emmett led the Grizzlies with 28 points, six boards, four assists and two steals. For the Mavs, Brown had 20 points, six boards, eight assists and one steal. Also shooting in double digits for the Grizzlies was Cordell Henry (15), Ansu Sesay (12), Dahntay Jones (10) and Lang (14). Lang also had 14 rebounds.

MESSAGE BOARD "Taking Stock" UCLA by Cameron Blount With another UCLA basketball season over and yet another drawing near, it is time to take stock of the program and assess just where the Lavin Era has taken us and where we may very well find ourselves at the close of next year. It is time to evaluate the various weaknesses of the team, identify possible strengths, and attempt to gauge our success next year in the Pac-10 and beyond. Last year left us (by us I mean the typical slack jawed, beer guzzling, armchair quarterbacking UCLA hoops fan) with mixed emotions to say the least. To some the end of the season left a bitter taste in the mouth, a ‘what might have been’ flavor that was something like eating a vegetarian hamburger. Sure, it might be close to the real thing, but tasting it only whets the appetite for some real meat. The final four, indeed the national championship, was only a few games away (with humble Missouri to beat, no less) and yet the team once again succumbed with the final goal in sight, leaving the fans hungering for more.

F ANTASY B ASKETBALL S TATISTICS October 7, 1998 A typical fantasy basketball league has 12 teams with 10 starting players on each team. To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! CATEGORY AVG PER GAME STND DEV STND DEV/AVG Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks Treys Free Throws FG% In the same manner the fantasy stiffs can be identified. Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.
