Boomers too good for Brazil
The Australian men's basketball team has defeated Brazil 102-77 in the second round of the four-nations tournament in Italy. Glen Saville top-scored for the Boomers with 20 points while Jason Smith added 15 points and John Rillie 13. Captain Shane Heal and forward Matthew Nielsen were once again rested, giving the 10 remaining players plenty of game-time. The Boomers were slow out of the blocks before going on a 25-2 run through the middle of the first term. The second quarter was even before a few words from coach Brian Goorjian fired his side to a better third quarter performance, Australia winning it by 10 points. The Boomers play Italy, who had a shock win over the United States last week, on Sunday before heading to Athens to check into the Olympic Village on August 11.

MORE NEWS Brisbane, AUSTRALIA (Dec 21) - Leroy Loggins, who celebrated his 41st birthday on Sunday, played his 500th National Basketball League game in the Brisbane Bullets' 106-93 win against Perth Wildcats in Brisbane on Saturday. Loggins will equal injured Perth forward James Crawford's record of 501 NBL games when he suits up for the Bullets against Melbourne Tigers at Melbourne Park this weekend, reports The Australian. "I definitely want to play one more season," Loggins said. "I want to be the first to play 20 seasons in the NBL. No one will ever take that away from me. "I'll be in a league of my own, at least temporarily until James Crawford and Andrew Gaze get there." Loggins is one of the most highly-decorated players in NBL history. Named on the NBL's 20th Season Team, Loggins has won three NBL titles with the Bullets (1985-87) and West Adelaide Bearcats (1982) and has also received three Most Valuable Player awards. His extraordinary consistency and durability have been rewarded with selection in the NBL All Star Five 10 times. Only Andrew Gaze has won more MVP awards (seven) and All Star honours (13).

AIS Basketballer Named in Boomers Team
By Joshua Smith - 7th May, 2001 Australian Institute of Sport Basketballer Luke Schenscher has been named in the Australian Boomers team to play in the East Asian Games being held in Japan from 19-27 May 2001. The giant 213cm Centre joins the likes of Luc Longley, Shane Heal, Mark Bradtke, and Brett Maher as players who have progressed from the AIS Basketball Program to the Australian team. Sports UPDATED: 08:02, August 20, 2004 US rallies past Australia in men's basketball The Dream Team of the United States rallied past Australia 89-79 on Thursday to take its second straight win at the Athens Olympics men's basketball tournament. The United States improved its record to 2-1 in preliminary group B where Australia dropped to 1-2. Trailing most of the first half and entering the fourth quarter 67-65 down, the United States rallied with a 22-5 run for a 87-72 lead one minute and 49 seconds from the end. Lebron James and Shawn Marion came from the bench to score six points apiece in the late run, which sealed the victory for the defending Olympic champion, with James capping it with an alley-oop dunk assisted by Stephon Marbury. "Our bench really helped, especially in the fourth quarter when we had our run," said American head coach Larry Brown at the press conference. "That's a good thing."

TOWERING at 194cm and wearing a men's size 13 shoe, Rachel Herrick looks a lot older than her 16 years.
But when we talk to her, the demeanour of a modest, giggling teenager shines through.
The Hills Hornet representative basketballer, from Acacia Gardens, has been selected in the Sydney Flames' development squad, invited by the Flames' coach Karen Dalton.
Not bad for a girl who has only played the game for two years.
Attending Westfields Sports High School in Fairfield, the year 10 student combines six sessions of basketball every week with schoolwork.
Her career started when a schoolfriend asked her if she wanted to play in a local competition at the Hills Basketball stadium.
From there she made the U16 Hills Hornets representative side in 2000, the U18 and youth league in 2001. This year she made the final round of selection for the NSW U18 side and looks for selection in The Hills U18 and open women's Australian Basketball Association (ABA) side. When asked what sports she played before basketball, laughing, she said she was a dancer.

Perth knocked down their threes at better than 50% in the first half and finished with 15 of 31. It was a credit to the Kings that they could withstand that barrage and take the match to overtime where they found the fresher legs of the home team too much to compete with.
