The signs of improvement by the Mavericks under Nelson can be seen during his tenure in Dallas. When Don Nelson arrived, the team won 19 games in a shortened season which would have equated to 32 in a full year. Then during the 1999-2000 campaign, Nelson led the Mavericks to a 40-42 record which included a 9-1 April which was the best month in team history. The great turnaround continued during 2000-2001 as the Mavericks became one of the best teams in the NBA. Nelson led the Mavericks to just their third 50-win season in franchise history, their first playoff appearance in 11 years, their first winning season in 11 years and the best road record in franchise history. The team has posted a winning record in each month for the first time in 13 years.

Olympic Basketball
Table of Contents
History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith , was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

Heirs to the Air By Dave D'Alessandro
The Sporting News Years from now, when you're old and gray and your grandchildren are gushing over the talents of some 7-3 point guard from Libya, you will be asked to recollect the talent of Michael Jordan as you all gather around the Microsoft Cybertube (retail price: $9,995) for a Sunday NBA quadupleheader. It shouldn't be hard to do. "He was the best at everything," you'll say, pausing long enough to have an android nurse wipe the oatmeal from your chin. And, just before you fade into your 12th nap of the day, you'll repeat, "The best . . ." Not even your failing memory or the convenience of time detachment will be able to alter this reality, either. Because you only have to remember one thing: In your time, when both you and Michael were in the prime of life, he was the touchstone for everything related to basketball. He was all things to all people-the best at this, the best at that, the best at everything in between-and this was the foundation of his spit-polished legacy. Just be thankful the kids didn't ask who became "the best" upon his retirement, because this is a question our feeble, superannuated brain cells will have trouble computing.

March 7, 1997: Miami HEAT 108, Washington Bullets 105 Tim Hardaway was an NBA veteran of 13 seasons, more than five of which were played with the Miami HEAT. He was a first-round draft choice of Golden State out of Texas-El Paso who found fast stardom with the Warriors and their high-octane RUN-TMC (Hardaway-Mitch Richmond-Chris Mullin) offense. Traded on February 22, 1996 with Chris Gatling to the HEAT for Kevin Willis and Bimbo Coles, Hardaway led Miami into the playoffs in six straight seasons. He finished his Miami career averaging 17.3 points and 7.8 assists in 367 games and shooting .356 from the three-point arc. He retired after the 2002-03 season and is ranked No. 9 all-time in the NBA with 8.1 assists per game.
