“Draft controls everything. When something unexpected happens, all bets are off.” - anonymous Los Angeles Laker' staffer. Time to lick my wounds and take stock. With Jonathan Bender and the 17th pick not traded to the Lakers on draft day, the lesson learned is that even the most rock solid deal that gets leaked early is nothing but talk until it is announced official by the league. This is a learning process as I find my way deeper into the workings of the NBA. Bear with me as a work to get it right. Whether it was Indiana pulled out when Danny Granger fell to 17, the Lakers calling off the deal because of the nuances of the new collective bargaining agreement or some vast misinformation leaking out through the Laker organization about a deal that never was . . . reporting anything as a done deal prematurely is a mistake I won't make again. The Draft
Watching the draft board, as the top six picks fell in the 2005 NBA Draft, it was clear that the Lakers weren't able to trade up in the mix. When Charlie Villanueva and Ike Diogu were called in the top nine, the obvious pick for the Lakers would be the kid they worked so hard to trade up in the draft to get . . . right? Nope, Gerald Green was a smokescreen.

E-mail it to a friend Grant to start or pack? 01:54 AM PDT on Saturday, July 16, 2005 Broderick Turner LONG BEACH - There has been much speculation that only increased once the Lakers acquired power forward Kwame Brown that the team would waive forward Brian Grant in a cost-saving measure. But Grant's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Friday that in his recent conversation with Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak there was no indication of releasing Grant. In fact, Bartelstein said he and Grant are under the impression that Lakers coach Phil Jackson is considering starting Grant at power forward. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, there is a one-time provision that allows teams to waive a high-salaried player and not have to pay the luxury taxes on his contract. If the Lakers were to waive Grant, who is due to earn $14.3 million this season and $15.4 million next season, the Lakers would save paying about $30 million in luxury taxes. The Lakers still have to pay Grant and his salary would count against the salary cap for the next two years. The Lakers have until Sept. 30 to make a decision about Grant.
