By M.J. Darnell / April 3, 2004 David Stern's been talking seriously about developing a real NBA minor league; a league where teams could send young players down, get them some playing time, and recall them when they felt they were ready to contribute. This would be the best thing to happen to the NBA since the phase-out of prune-smuggling shorts.
Why is it such a great thing? Because of the following two statements.
1) Young basketball players deserve a chance to get paid.
2) Young basketball players are dragging down the quality of the NBA.
If a business is willing to pay a guy for their ability, or the promise of future ability, I don't see why the young man should be denied the opportunity. If someone like Britney Spears can make millions as a teenager by showing her ass and propagating the idea of young women as nothing more than sex toys, no one should have a problem with a young kid pocketing a few mil because he's got a tight jump shot. An age limit really isn't fair. Everyone's got a right to their hustle, be it basketball, music, accounting, or interpretive dance.

Aug. 27 When the NBA season tips off, Steve Francis will be playing for a different organization, in a new city and in an unfamiliar conference. Despite the change in address following an offseason trade from the Rockets to the Magic, Francis remains loyal to the city of Houston. It was there that Francis earned the nickname “Franchise” and became one of the top guards in the league. He spoke to NBA.com about his involvement with the Steve Francis Foundation and about the challenges that lie ahead for the Magic. Steve Francis Summer Fiesta, Houston

Steve Francis: A Top Contender Melanie Curtsinger
Believe it or not, there was more than one NBA general manager that had their eye on Steve Francis last year. Sure, Houston Rockets GM Caroll Dawson looked on as Francis averaged 16.6 points, 6.2 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game en route to his third consecutive NBA All-Star performance. But so did Magic head man John Weisbrod.
Weisbrod saw it all, but their was one particular occurrence that really made Francis stand out and become a top contender as one of the eventual replacements of Magic star Tracy McGrady.

Rockland Scholar-Athlete Award: Albertus Magnus' Francis By STEVEN EDELMAN
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: November 27, 2004) Charisma has never been in short supply for Albertus Magnus soccer captain Steve Francis. His leadership abilities are a big reason why the Falcons were able to race straight ahead to their first sectional championship in 26 years and a trip to the state semifinals. Without explanation, teammates are drawn to Francis, The Journal News Rockland Scholar-Athlete of the Week. "He was our best player by far," Albertus Magnus coach Brian Fitzpatrick said. "He was one of the three captains, but he was the leader everyone looked to on the field." Francis' play earned him the nickname "The Franchise." Borrowed from a basketball player of the same name, Steve Francis of the Orlando Magic, it describes a leader whose unselfish commitment to his team makes him indispensable. "Naturally I feel that I'm a leader," the senior midfielder said. "I'm very vocal on and off the field." Francis' 17 goals and 11 assists made him the fourth leading scorer among Class B players in Section 1. His outstanding offensive play also helped the Falcons to a 19-2-1 record.

Recruitment: St. Francis lands Pinkston
Saturday, March 26, 2005
Baldwin's Julian Pinkston probably should drop a thank-you note in the mail to Chartiers Valley's Steve Profeta. After all, Profeta helped get Pinkston noticed and get a Division I scholarship. Pinkston, a 6-foot-5 senior swingman for the Highlanders who averaged 16 points and 7.5 rebounds this season, has committed to St. Francis (Pa.). Profeta, a 6-4 guard/forward and AAU teammate of Pinkston, committed to the school in late August. "Steve and I played AAU basketball together," said Pinkston of the Pittsburgh JOTS. "The coaches at St. Francis got interested in me through him because they were coming to see him play and I was also on his team. I think him being on my team really helped me. It got me noticed. Steve and I are friends, and I'm excited that I'm going to be a teammate of his in college." Pinkston is the first Division I basketball recruit from Baldwin in more than a decade. His other Division I offer was from Robert Morris, also a Northeast Conference school. St. Francis went 15-13 overall, 10-8 in conference play this season and is coached by Bobby Jones, a former Pitt assistant under Ralph Willard.
