This on a team where Shaq and Kobe have had their respective spots locked down as only future Hall of Famers can; where Glen Rice and Rick Fox have claimed all but a handful of starts at the three; and where AC Green, Horace Grant and Samaki Walker have had a year each to call themselves the team’s starting power forward. Which leaves point guard, the position any old-school head (except those who swear by the triangle offense, perhaps) would argue is still the most vital on the court. Maybe that’s fitting for these Lakers, a group that’s rarely taken the conventional route to success, anyway. But still, it’s kinda crazy to think that a team good enough to bring home the hardware three straight seasons—for a franchise that can claim the nicest point god in NBA history—has done so with virtually no consistency at the one. All of which, in a strange sort of way, makes Derek Fisher’s six seasons in L.A. that much more impressive. While cats likes Ron Harper, Tyronn Lue and Lindsey Hunter have come and gone, DFish has survived numerous challenges to a job that most folks are only now realizing probably should’ve been his all along. Lingering foot injuries and Phil Jackson’s well-known disdain for small guards make it all the more amazing that, as L.A. goes for its fourth straight championship, Derek Fisher is, at 28, the only real candidate for the Lakers starting pg job.

Rummo When the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA title this year, it was no surprise to anyone that follows professional basketball. The Lakers had dominated the NBA West for most of the season, and Shaquille O’Neal, the team’s very visible center and MVP put on quite a show for the fans throughout the playoffs. Less visible however, was point guard Derek Fisher, described as “a contradiction to the ‘Showtime’ Lakers of the 80's.” Fisher had his best season ever, averaging 9.4 points per game. He was big in the playoffs too, setting up Shaq for a number of impressive alley-oops. But there was something else about Derek Fisher that got my attention: he was wearing wristbands with the popular inscription “WWJD.” What Would Jesus Do? It almost seems out of place on the basketball court to entertain such a notion. Many would say it borders on irreverence or sacrilege. Laker Derek Fisher hit 75% of his three-point attempts (15 for 20) in a 2001 play-off series against San Antonio.
