Layovers, lust and lousy officiating. Any former college athlete on a fall tour with the Athletes in Action men's basketball team must deal with those issues and a myriad of others.
We're taking you with the AIA men's Red team (a Blue tour ran concurrently) for two days to show you the spiritual lessons, divine encounters and stiff competition that define AIA Basketball.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6 The problems escalate–four team members have to walk a mile to find the off-site rental-car agency. It's the same hurry-up-and-wait that's defined the day. "What are we saving–40 or 50 bucks?", says head coach Chuck Badger, sitting on a dormant conveyor belt, keeping his eye on team baggage. "It's not worth the wait." Team dinner tonight, though, is worth the wait. Standing in line, David Daniels–a/k/a Double-D–reminisces about road trips in the Continental Basketball Association (a minor professional league) and on past AIA tours (he's been on six). "In the CBA we loved Old Country Buffet," the 5-10 point guard says. "You could really stretch out that per diem there, man." The team does eat quite a lot. But above all, tonight's bread-breaking helps bond a group of young men needing a night off after six games in six nights.

Lindale to fish national championship By Gary King, Milford Chronicle Area angler Shea Lindale will fish the Junior National Stump Jumpers Fishing Tournament this weekend in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. Lindale will depart for Kittanning Saturday and attend a banquet Saturday night to open the tournament. He finished sixth overall last year and enters this year's tournament ranked sixth nationally. He will be paired up with another fisherman and the duo will get to fish with a pro-fisherman. Sunday will be a pre-fish day for Lindale, his partner and the pro. The pro will provide tips on fishing the Allegheny River and provide advice to Lindale and his partner. The tournament will be held on Monday. The tournament is a five fish limit with a 12-inch minimum length. Lindale and his partner Ryan Smith won the local tournament this past weekend. The pair fished Records Pond. Lindale is a six year veteran of the Stump Jumpers fishing tournament and this is his final season competing. The Stump Jumpers feature ages 11-14 and 15-18 age groups. Lindale pre-fished the Allegheny in early June to get prepared for the national tournament. "It is pretty exciting and last year I really didn't know what to expect or a lot about it," Lindale said. "This is my last year competing in Stump Jumpers and I would love to beat my finish last year. I'm looking forward to having a lot of fun this weekend."

Below the Rim Every weekday at the same time Troy and about nine to 10 other guys show up at La Madera Park, located at Glenn and Treat, to play ball and get out of the house. Most people at the park are either unemployed or still in high school. The reason most of them said they play there is because of the proximity to their homes and because they have claimed the court as their own.
With so many parks in the immediate area, La Madera is one of a handful that has a regular afternoon game. It's this basketball game that has attracted so many different people to the park over the years. It is the regulars who have brought character to La Madera. Without the regulars playing ball at the park, La Madera becomes nothing more than an a couple of old-swing sets and blocks of un-kept grass. Neither of which would make Troy come out to play everyday.

One week after the Grand Final and the Outlaws are still basking in the glow of their victory over the Rams. On top of this comes an invitation to play in the Pan Pacific Basketball Championships. Can it get better than this? The answer is no, and a rude shock waits. The Outlaws need two things in order to participate, money and a fit coach. Alan Peterson uses these facts to hijack this new Pan Pacs team. He will replace Max as coach and the current Rams players will be standing by to replace any Outlaws players who can't afford to go. The Outlaws are outraged. They won't let Alan do this to Max. But they soon find that it was Max's decision to drop his role of coaching. Still re-cooperating from his heart attack, he's not well enough for the job. The Outlaws have problems. Franco doesn't have the money required to play. Ralph and Johnno's savings are only enough to cover one of them. Then there is Emily and Jacinta to fund as well. As the Outlaws rally together and set about raising money, working the Lamburger Van and the Boatshed for a cut of the profits, the Rams wait like vultures to take their places. Meanwhile Emily has applied to join the Coastal Cadets, a kind of 'greenie group', who take care of the coastline. Unhappy with her application but busy raising money for the Outlaws, Emily has an idea that will help her do both at the same time.

This is a big, big, big fish story. Caleb Cloud,
11, of Loveland, hooked a gigantic halibut, three times bigger than himself. It weighed 335 pounds and took three men, struggling 45 minutes, to pull it into a boat cruising in the Pacific Ocean. Caleb said he thought he had hooked a rock. "When I saw it was a big fish, I was nervous, excited and scared. I didn't want to lose it," Caleb said. He was fishing with his parents, Dwight and Laura; brother, Cole , 9; friend Matt Ellison; and Matt's father, Mike Ellison. "When we went there to fish, the boys wanted to catch a fish larger than themselves," Dwight Cloud said. "Caleb is a basketball player and when you really look at it, he caught a fish as big as Shaq (NBA player Shaquille O'Neal), 7 feet long." Caleb is about 5 feet tall and weighs about 90 pounds. Cole also caught a halibut twice his size; it weighed 133 lbs. Dwight Cloud said he and his wife coordinated a fishing trip among 24 people. They flew to Alaska and stayed at the Elfin Cove Lodge, about a 45-minute float plane trip from Juneau.

You'd logically assume every coaching genius, from North Carolina's Roy Williams to UConn's Jim Calhoun , would be hunkered down with a good book, catching rays at the beach or touring the world's finest links. Enjoying the good life, right? Not a chance. July Mayhem is upon us ... or rather, Sneaker Wars Gone Wild. Head coaches and assistants, recognizable by their school-logo polo shirts, are hustling from gym to gym, eye-balling the latest batch of teenage hoops talent. July is evaluation time, when kids audition at various camps and tournaments across the country. So coaches are racking up frequent flier miles and burning the rubber, trekking to elaborate camps staged by sneaker companies and tournaments that run through the end of the month. This year, the summer scene is even more hectic after sneaker kingpin

David Libby: Mr Beacon 2004
On Friday, April 23rd, students at Northwest Christian College (NCC) experienced a veritable time-warp at an 80's themed Mr. Question Mark pageant. The event formerly known as "Mr. Crusader" was especially unique this year as NCC's new mascot, Beacons, was revealed during the show's opening dance routine. A total of 11 contestants sang, danced and impersonated their favorite 80's celebrity in what host Mike Stear lovingly refers to as "The Man Buffet." The show has been in the making since mid-December, giving participants just enough time to hone their crafts and rehearse complicated dance steps for the purpose of raising money for NCC's Mission Team. The pageant began with a skit performed by the Mission Team where members imitated characters from Jim Henson's "Muppet Show," a staple of 80s TV entertainment. Following that, the audience was bombarded with a clash of 1980's pop-culture as the men performed complicated dance moves choreographed well enough to make New Kids on the Block jealous, while dressed in garb straight out of the
