Dr. J is one of only three players in history to score a career total of over 30,000 points in professional playIn the 1970s, Julius Erving did more than anyone to build the fledgling American Basketball Association (ABA) into a worthy rival of the NBA. Julius Erving was voted most valuable player in the ABA for three consecutive seasons. When Julius Erving moved to the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA, he continued to surprise and delight the fans with his dazzling moves. and all Lovers of the game, Philadelphia fans in particular, thrilled to see Dr. J leap from behind the foul line, traveling 15 feet through the air to dunk the ball, throwing off the opposition with multiple mid-air feints along the way. His unique and imaginative style of play has forever changed our notions of what is possible on a basketball court. In a sense, today's basketball superstars are all the children of Dr. J.

Julius Erving's Sneaker Classic
Converse keeps going and going in the casual canvas sneaker market with the "Chuck Taylor" All Star , originally designed (and up to middle 1970's) worn as a technical basketball shoe.
Improved sneaker technology may have relegated the "Chuck Taylor" All Star to casual fashion, but Converse has tried to maintain a competitive presence in the technical basketball shoe market, from the 1970 leather One Star to the 1996 All Star 2000 and the 1999 Converse Helium
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Converse "Dr. J" was very popular for basketball players. The "Dr. J", named after basketball star Julius Erving, was produced in low-top and high-top styles, as well as smooth leather and suede.
This particular variant has a scooped-out design at the top of the upper; it also has a blue chevron and a black star, where the shoe above it has only blue trim.
I remember wanting to buy a pair in late April 1985... and I had to hunt for them. It wasn't basketball season, and most stores had sold out. Nowadays, it seems, athletic shoe stores always keep basketball shoes in stock!
Converse recognizes the continued popularity of this design, as they made them again in the 1990's, 2001, and 2003. However, they placed the shoe in their "athletic originals" (what I'd call "knock-about

Julius Erving, the great and wondrous "Dr. J," was the dominant player of his era, an innovator who changed the way the game was played. He was a wizard with the ball, performing feats never before seen: midair spins and whirls punctuated by powerful slam dunks. Erving was one of the first players to make extemporaneous individual expression an integral part of the game, setting the style of play that would prevail in the decades to follow. A gracious, dignified, and disciplined man, Erving was an ideal ambassador for the game. He was the epitome of class, and no player was more respected. "As a basketball player, Julius was the first to truly take the torch and become the spokesman for the NBA," said friend and former coach Billy Cunningham. "He understood what his role was and how important it was for him to conduct himself as a representative of the league. Julius was the first player I ever remember who transcended sports and was known by one name, Doctor." Erving began his professional career in the American Basketball Association with the Virginia Squires and the New York Nets. Widely regarded as the greatest player of his time, he is often considered to have been the main catalyst for the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. A 6-foot-7, 210-pound small forward, he also played for 11 years with the Philadelphia 76ers, leading them to the NBA crown in 1983.

"I acknowledge a relationship with her mother in 1980," Erving told The Associated Press . "My wife, who has known from the beginning, and children are aware of this situation. "All matters concerning Alexandra since her birth have been handled privately through counsel. I am pleased to see Alexandra, at 18, doing so well and I applaud her mother's efforts and courage." Your Take: Who should made the Top Eight
Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday June 14, 1999 11:35 AM Many users feel Hall-of-Famer Julius Erving could have glided his way to our Top Eight. Rick Stewart/Allsport CNN/SI asked users to tell us who should have made our Top Eight list of the Century's Best pro basketball players. The one name that many felt was missing was Julius Erving. Dr. J scored more than 30,000 points (between the ABA and NBA) and revolutionized the art of the dunk. Here's a sampling of your submissions: How could the man they call "Mr. Clutch", and the person that was used in designing the NBA logo not be listed as one of the Top Eight basketball players ever? I submit Jerry West. Jeff Hughes, Chandler AZ Young Lee, Seattle, WA What about... Charles Barkley
Rick Barry
Elgin Baylor
Clyde Drexler
Patrick Ewing
Julius Erving
Anfernee Hardaway
John Havlicek
Elvin Hayes
Jeff Hornacek
Karl Malone Moses Malone Pete Maravich Kevin McHale George Mikan Scottie Pippen Hakeem Olajuwon Shaquille O'Neal Glen Rice Dennis Rodman John Stockton Isiah Thomas Jerry West Jery West should have been on the list instead of Bob Cousy. I don't know one person other than Phil Taylor who would not rank Jerry West ahead of Bob Cousy. West was a great shooter, leader and defender, and a very good ball handler. The only thing Cousy could do better than West was handle the ball, but he was not so much better at that to make up for his inferiority to West in virtually everything else. Elgin Baylor is right up there with West, if not ahead of him. A great scorer with fantastic moves and great strength who was also an excellent rebounder, Baylor was so superior to Cousy that it's almost laughable to mention them in the same breath. I'd also have put Julius Erving, Rick Barry, John Havlicek, and several others ahead of Cousy, despite the fact that I've been a Celtics fan since 1958. Your other seven all deserved to be in the Top Eight.
