There will be several fine choices, including Chauncey Billups, the Detroit point guard who has helped the Pistons deconstruct the Los Angeles Lakers. But here's a novel, if impractical, suggestion: How about Joe Dumars? Joe D., the old Bad Boy who helped Detroit win NBA titles in 1989 and '90, is now helping to change the league by the clever way he has built the Pistons as the team's 41-year-old president of basketball operations. There are lessons here for the Milwaukee Bucks, who are now favoring the Detroit blueprint after painful and expensive experiences; the rest of the league; and especially the self-destructing Lakers, who are failing spectacularly because one of their superstars continues to refuse to throw the ball down low to their other superstar.
