By Damon Fontenot Contributing Writer It was no longer a surprise, but the anticipation and excitement were high as several hundred people and a countless array of media packed into the University of Houston Athletics/Alumni Center last Wednesday afternoon. Then Clyde Drexler walked in, and the anxious crowd, filling chairs, halls and balconies went crazy. Clyde was wearing a name tag that simply read, "Coach Drexler." Attendance has been a major problem at the University of Houston's basketball games recently, but judging by the mob of media and fans crammed in to see Clyde Drexler named the Cougars' fifth head coach, that problem may be solved. Now, one other concern remains: winning. Drexler inherits a program that has seen a steady decline in wins and that suffered a 9-20 season this year under former coach Alvin Brooks. Drexler and his assistants are eager to get the UH program back on the right track. "I think we're all ready to get started, like now," he said. "But the only problem is, we've all got jobs. I've got a pressing job. I think we have a game on Thursday." Right now Drexler, who was given a five-year contract worth $150,000 a year plus incentives, can concern himself with the well-being of only one Houston team, the Rockets. A state law prevents Drexler from actually stepping into his role as head coach until he has completed his job with the professional club.

Cougar legend climbs rocky road to greatness
Clyde glides home a champion
James Beltran Sports Editor Disappointments and heartbreaks-almost every athlete endures these through the course of a career. These unhappy episodes, however, are not normally associated with the illustrious career of one of the NBA's all time greatest 50 players. But for Houston's Clyde Drexler, it has been a rocky road to the top. The disappointment began as early as his senior year in high school when Clyde was left off many of the top college programs' recruiting lists. "That's going way back," Drexler said when trying to remember back to his high school days. "Coming out (of high school), I thought I was a hardworking average player who had good skills. I never thought about trying to dominate or trying to be the best player. I just tried to come in, work hard and do the best I could to help the team win." His unpolished talents coming out of Sterling High School in 1980 made Clyde a diamond in the rough giving off a sparkle that caught the eye of only one: Guy V. Lewis of the University of Houston. "When I first saw Clyde, I knew he could play basketball," said Lewis, who coached the Cougars to five Final Fours in his 30-year tenure. "Clyde could drive to the basket like no one I've ever seen."

Injuries cut into Drexler's productivity in 1995-96, his first full season for the Rockets. He had solid stats of 19.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game, but was limited to 52 games due to a pair of injuries. Drexler missed eight games from Dec. 21 to Jan. 3 due to a right shin contusion and then sat out 20 games from Feb. 19 to April 3 because of a slight lateral meniscus tear in his right knee. He scored in double figures in 46 of the 52 games he played, in cluding 24 games of 20 or more points and four games of 30 or more. His season high was 41 points on 17-for-23 shooting against Charlotte on Dec. 2, a game in which he made 13 consecutive shots over a 20-minute span. he had three triple-doubles during the season and participated in his ninth All-Star Game, scoring 11 points in 19 minutes. Still recovering from his knee injury, Drexler averaged 16.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists in eight playoff games.
Drexler played in three fewer games and scored 62 fewer points than the previous season, but he still set a new Trail Blazers scoring average record at 27.0 points per game. He ranked fourth in the league in scoring and fifth in steals (2.73 per game). Among his many marvelous outings was a 50-point explosion in a double-overtime game against the Sacramento Kings on January 6. Fast becoming a fixture in the NBA All-Star Game, he played 25 minutes and piled up 14 points and 12 rebounds. Drexler had been known throughout his career as a spectacular, high-flying dunker, and he didn't disappoint the hometown faithful in the Slam-Dunk Championship at the 1989 NBA All-Star Weekend in Houston, finishing second to Kenny Walker of the New York Knicks. Drexler had a solid postseason, averaging 27.7 points. However, Portland failed to advance past the first round for the fourth consecutive season, dropping a three-game series to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Taking China to the hoop
A rag-tag team of retired NBA All Stars and also-rans gave the Chinese National squad a pre-Olympic workout, but medals weren't on the minds of the NBA marketing men. China is the meatiest market and mainlanders are already mad for Showtime.
By Ron Gluckman/Beijing C LYDE 'THE GLIDE' DREXLER nabs the ball from an opponent, flicks it to a teammate, then races up court for the return pass. He leaps high and glides to the hoop for a lay-up. Dream Teamer Drexler has made the same sort of play hundreds of times. But never upon this court, nor in this country. This time the basketball legend is putting his moves on Middle Kingdom, to the delight of a fervent crowd of fans in the Chinese capital. Drexler, one of the NBA's 50 greatest all-time players, with more than 20,000 points under his belt, appeared with the NBA Legends before 10,000 screaming fans at Beijing's Workers' Stadium in August, before continuing on a tri-city ten day tour of China that ended in Shanghai a week a later. It was not a make or break tournament game, but a potential marketing play for the NBA that brought Drexler, a Portland Trailblazers All Star and champion with the Houston Rockets to Beijing.

Lewis Elvin Hayes Otis Birdsong ... Phi Slama Jama The University of Houston has been turning heads ever since it began playing basketball in 1946. Houston won its first game, won a conference championship, and played in the NAIB national tournament in its first year. To prove its first title was not a fluke, Houston came back the next year and won the Lone Star Conference championship again, and has been winning ever since. In addition to winning those two Lone Star Conference titles, the Cougars have won championships in three other leagues: the Gulf Coast, Missouri Valley and Southwest Conferences. On the national level, the Cougars have played in two NCAA championship games and five Final Fours, made 10 'Sweet Sixteen' appearances, and won both the 1968 and 1983 AP and UPI regular-season national championships. UH has also played in six National Invitation Tournaments and one NIT championship game. The Cougars were hosts for college basketball's "Game Of The Century" when 2nd-ranked Houston entertained top-ranked UCLA at The Astrodome on January 20, 1968. Not only did UH upset the Bruins, the contest was the first nationally-televised regular-season game and was the first game with attendance over 50,000. After defeating UCLA, the 1967-68 team finished the regular season with a perfect 28-0 record entering the NCAA Tournament. That Cougar team also became the first UH team to win 30 games in a season as UH did not lose a game until it reached the Final Four, ending the year with a 31-2 record.

    The Return of Clyde Drexler?
    Brian Wagner
Known to the world as the Glide (not the floss, the classy basketball player with that hint of upper-lip hair and sporting a shiny, classy lack of hair on his head), Clyde Drexler teamed with quality players like Buck Williams (now managing partner of a computer service technology firm), Jerome Kersey (assistant coach of the Bucks), Kevin Duckworth (overweight body guard, still looks huggable), and Terry Porter (head coach of the Bucks) to infuse Portland with the spirit of Rip City. Even as we lamented never having taken Michael Jordan over Sam Bowie, a move that conceivably cost us those two NBA Finals (but hey, who's counting), we reveled in being the hippest, nicest team in the NBA. Honestly, we were flying high. Today, of course, we're just high while driving in our yellow SUVs between games.

Houston, Texas “A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast in the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them,” is scripture that automatically comes to mind after you meet Eunice (Scott) Drexler’s children, who are all living testimony to the foregoing scripture (Matt 7:18-20), found in the Holy Bible. For sure, an outspoken Eunice’s parenting philosophy is rooted in scripture, but she is more likely to walk it, rather than just talk it, as far too many Christian mothers are wont to do.
This writer, who was a Sports Editor (when Clyde “The Glide,” decided to forego his final year as a member of the University of Houston’s “Phi Slama Jamma” fraternity), thought an apropos assertion would be, “I know you’re glad that Clyde was drafted. Now you won’t have to work so hard.” Eunice, in good humor retorted, “I’m glad that he’ll have enough money to buy his own groceries. The only thing his being drafted will change is that I won’t have to feed him any more, because he’ll have enough money to feed himself.” In essence, once you meet the delightful Eunice, you immediately realize that the main reason that the Drexler’s have the right stuff is because of their mother’s family values.

Clyde's Choice
Dateline: 03/23/98 Clyde Drexler can do anything he wants. He can play hoops until he has to use a walker to get up and down the court and we'll still cheer him. He can retire and sell barbecue at the family stand and we'll line up for a plate. But what Clyde really wants to do is to restore his alma mater to basketball glory, so he's taking on the challenge of coaching the University of Houston Cougars. Houston responded as one to the announcement that Clyde was retiring from the Rockets to take on the coaching job at University of Houston. We might miss him on the court, but the choice was his well-earned prerogative. Clyde has long ago passed the threshold of Houston sports legends who can do no wrong, and his loyalty to his old school can only be commended. In fact, he may do the troubled U.H. basketball program some good. There are wheels within wheels; various blue-chip prospects are known to have soured on U.H. after the firing of coach Alvin Brooks; and Clyde is respected, even revered by new generation players - rightly so.

Among the preeminent talents in the National Basketball Association is the outspoken forward of the Philadelphia 76ers, Charles Barkley, whose quick and aggressive play around the basket has placed him among the league's leading rebounders and scorers since the 1986-87 season. At six feet five inches tall, Barkley is the shortest player ever to lead the NBA in rebounding. The 250 pounds packed onto his relatively stubby frame helps Barkley to overpower taller players; never has a player so heavy been able to leap as high or dribble as skillfully. "Charles Barkley is unique with his body frame, with his structure, with his jumping ability," Pat Riley, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and currently the head coach of the New York Knicks, explained to Jan Hubbard of New York News day (February 25, 1990). "The whole thing is unique, and that's why he is truly great." An extraordinarily intense competitor, Barkley plays every game as though it were his last. "A game for Charles is a passionate experience," Matt Guokas, Barkley's former head coach with the 76ers, told Mark Ribowsky for Inside Sports (June 1986). "I've never seen anyone so ferocious in wanting to prove he's better than his opponent." But Barkley's highly emotional nature and his frequently blunt comments to reporters have often made him the center of controversy.
