With sloped shoulders and doleful eyes, Pesic, now 47, has the look of a man from whom something has been irrevocably taken. A dozen years ago he took presumptive rivals - rivals for playing time, and from Hatfield and McCoy club teams in Yugoslavia's national league - and built a team. He limned broad motivational themes and strategic principles and then left the X's and O's to a fastidious assistant, an older man named Brana Rajacic. Following an exhibition game in 1985, Rajacic wanted to know why Pesic wasn't disciplining the 7'1" Divac for brazenly dribbling the ball into the forecourt. Pesic just shrugged. "He does it perfectly," Pesic said. Today Pesic is an enforcer in the service of his old team's memory, with that black-and-white photograph as the brass knuckles of his task. He talks of a team reunion, for charity, perhaps to play the Dream Team. But would the U.S. players be willing? he asks a visitor from the States, even before addressing the matter of whether his former players would be willing. When he sees one of the Boys of Bormio, he asks, Do you keep up with one another? You who are in America, do you get together? And, urgently: Do you still have that picture?
"When I look at that picture and think of the war, I feel so sad," says Pesic, who now coaches Alibegovic at Alba Berlin. "Yes, I won the European Championships [in 1993, as coach of the German national team]. But my greatest personal satisfaction was with the Yugoslav juniors in Bormio. That was the result of four years of living and working together. It will stay in my soul for all eternity. "In sports, Yugoslav qualities include cooperation and a sense of togetherness. Unfortunately the politicians in our country have learned very little from our athletes."

INDIANAPOLIS As Ernest Hemingway once said of going broke, it happens gradually, and then suddenly. The same could be said for the erosion of America's global basketball supremacy, the lasting news from the world championships just concluded. As we sort out the multiple bizarrenesses of these Worlds e.g., Argentina fared better, and the United States worse, than the soccer teams of those respective countries did in the World Cup last June it's worth taking historical stock. Herewith, a timeline of how the world has gouged away at the icon that was American basketball, chunk by chunk, over the past 30 years: The Soviet Union pins the first Olympic loss ever on the United States, 51-50, to win the gold medal at the Munich Olympics. Yes, the defeat comes about thanks to a couple of dubious calls and timekeeping that would have left

The Team of Broken Dreams In advance of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, I hooked up with Steve James and Peter Gilbert, two of the filmmakers behind the award-winning documentary Hoop Dreams . With the collaboration of Sports Illustrated Television, we put together a nine-minute documentary that tells the story at the heart of chapter seven of Big Game, Small World : How members of the 1987 world junior champion Yugoslav team, players like Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoc, Dino Radja, and Sasha Djordjevic, forged friendships through basketball, only to have the war in the Balkans tear them apart.
The film won the International Olympic Committee’s 1996 Olympic Media Award and was nominated for an Emmy Award that same year. Sincerely, Alex Wolff, Sports Illustrated Magazine

Vlade Divac Doesn't Measure Success by NBA Championships. But He's Willing To Learn. The Man Who Would Be King
From Hoop Magazine by Henry Abbot
courtesy Jennifer Pottheiser The story of the Sacramento Kings over the last few years has been overloaded with victories and smiles, and that suits center Vlade Divac just fine.
“I play my best when I’m enjoying myself,” he explains, “so whomever I play against, I try to have fun.”
Yet his team is perhaps best known for losing one of the most hotly contested Western Conference Finals to the Los Angles Lakers last year. You might think Lakers center Shaquille O’Neal, who wins championships by tossing men like Divac around like rag dolls, would be an uncomfortable topic for Divac, but he isn’t crying about it.
“Shaquille O’Neal”, he explains, “is not really for me to worry about.” The stately 7-1 Serb has checked into a swanky Dallas Hotel suite, and he is eager to get some food before bed. But he is a patient man, so when the suite’s three phones ring with yet another reporter wanting to ask him about his ostensible nemesis-the biggest man in the NBA-Divac settles into the chair and starts talking.

KLA Accepts International Protectorate in Kosovo
TIRANA - The Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) said on Tuesday it was prepared to accept the creation of an international protectorate in Kosovo as a step towards its primary goal of independence from Serbia. "We support a transitional arrangement, a protectorate which would be an interim solution on the road to independence," KLA leader Hashim Thaqi told reporters after the meeting with Albanian Foreign Minister Paskal Milo. It is concluded that Thaqi's acceptance of an international protectorate brings him closer to Ibrahim Rugova, leader of the Kosovo Democratic Union.

In 1956 the sponsor was Simmenthal; in 1955/1956 the first foreign player played for Olimpia: the Greek Stephanidis.
From 1956 to 1973 Olimpia "Simmenthal" Milano won 10 more Italian Leagues; and on April 1st, 1966 won thefirst European Champions Cup for an italian team. Great players of those years were Vianello,Riminucci, Pieri, Bill Bradley (then great NBA player and today Senator of the USA) coached by Cesare Rubini, one of the greatest coach in history, member of Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield and now honorary President of Pallacanestro Olimpia Milano.
