1969-70 Topps Basketball Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps distributed this oversized (2.5" by 4 11/16") set of basketball cards in 10¢ wax packs (see picture below), which contained 10 cards and a "ruler" insert (see picture below). There are 98 player cards and one checklist - there are no subsets. The ruler inserts were printed on paper and folded as their size (2.5" by 9 7/8") made them far too big to fit in the wax packs in other way. They feature one real player drawn as a cartoon that is skinnier relative the guy's actual size than a Barbie doll is to the average Barbie-basher. Next to the player is a not-to-scale ruler showing the players reported height. In case you are collecting the Topps Rulers, note that there is no #5 ruler - it was never issued. The cards themselves - nicknamed "Tall Boys" - are very collectable and popular and feature a posed photo of the player with a vivid color for a background within a large oval, with the some part of the player extending beyond the border into the white border area. The white border area has four black and white drawings of basketball players - one in each corner around the player's oval. They player's name is typeset across the top of the card in red while the player's city is at the bottom - also in red. The player's position is below their name, but not always centered and whether or not they were left, right or centered seems to be pretty random (you can find cards were a player's head sticking out of the oval "forced" the position to the left or right, but others with the same amount of head protruding and the position centered above the head).

1973-74 Topps Basketball Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps stuck with the standard sized card format for '73-74. The cards were once again distributed in 10¢ packs of 10 cards. This year's inserts were a set of 33 team stickers, which are more valuable than you might assume considering they are just useless logos and not player photos. After several years of overly colorful basketball card sets, Topps toned it down a bit for their '73-74 set. The photography seems to be similar to past issues, with most players posed in front of walls. This may mean that Topps was originally going to give the cards the colorful airbrushed backgrounds of previous years but decided against it. While the colorful cards of the past may have been too colorful for some, these backgrounds were about as interesting as Al Capone's vault. The cards featured the team nickname at the bottom under the photograph. This was once again a slight problem since Houston and Denver both had teams called the Rockets. The Houston players got the word "Houston" printed in black letters over the net on the bottom left of the card. Not so for Denver Rockets cards which simply say "Rockets." The all-star subset cards feature action photography, but lose points for putting an unnecessary head shot of the player in a circle over the action shot.

ESPN.com
"Dave DeBusschere left his mark on the New York Knicks organization and Madison Square Garden from the moment he first joined our family in 1968. Often called "the final piece of the puzzle" that brought the Knicks two championships, his on-court prowess earned him many accolades: he is considered one of the greatest defensive players in League history; was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982; was named one of the 50 greatest NBA players of all time. "His success as a Knick and later as a front-office executive was the result of his talent, work ethic and love of the game. We are extremely proud that so much of Dave's distinguished career was as a part of the New York Knicks organization, and we are honored that his number will hang forever from the Garden rafters as a testament to his achievements. "We are prouder still, however, of our connection to the man. Dave DeBusschere's character off the court eclipsed even his most celebrated on-court heroics. He was an extraordinary gentleman, filled with a deep sense of gratitude, humility and grace. He earned the admiration of his peers, the basketball community and the fans, in no small part because he treated everyone he met with great respect and dignity. We are deeply shocked and saddened by his passing, and extend to the DeBusschere family the heartfelt sympathy of the entire New York Knickerbockers organization."

DeBusschere dies of heart attack
Associated Press
NEW YORK Dave DeBusschere, the defensive cornerstone of two championship teams who also was the NBA's youngest coach and the last commissioner of the rival ABA, died Wednesday of a heart attack at age 62. Dave DeBusschere served as general manager of the Knicks after his playing career. DeBusschere collapsed on a Manhattan street and died at NYU Downtown Hospital, the NBA said. A two-sport star at the University of Detroit, DeBusschere went from the court to the front office to the Hall of Fame and was one of a handful of players to reach the major leagues in both baseball and basketball. He pitched for two seasons with the Chicago White Sox and was the youngest coach in NBA history when he took over the Detroit Pistons in 1964. Traded to the New York Knicks in 1968, he played for championship teams in 1970 and 1973. DeBusschere also served as the last commissioner of the American Basketball Association and was general manager of the Knicks and the man who selected Patrick Ewing in the first NBA draft lottery in 1985. DeBusschere's uniform No. 22 was retired by the Knicks and hangs from the rafters at Madison Square Garden.

Contact me: kuff - at - offthekuff.com Main May 15, 2003 RIP, Dave DeBusschere The news that former New York Knicks star Dave DeBusschere died of a heart attack at the age of 62 makes me really sad. I grew up a Knicks fan, and got to see him play a couple of times back the glory days. I remember my folks taking me to Madison Square Garden for my birthday - somewhere among the stuff they sent me when they cleaned out the house prior to their move west in 1999 is a game program from February 19, 1972. Mike Lupica is frequently a twit, but he's the man to write an appreciation of a player like DeBusschere. He finds just the right quote:
"Sometimes you hear old guys in sports say they didn't know how good they had it," DeBusschere said to me once in a bar, because we both spent too much time in bars in our lives. "I knew how good I had it. We all did."
It's tough to say goodbye to a childhood icon. Rest in peace, Dave DeBusschere. Posted by Charles Kuffner on May 15, 2003 to Other sports TrackBack
Comments As another Knick fan from that era, I am also sad to find out that Dave DeBusschere passed away last night. If Walt Frazier was the example of New York flash and style, and Bill Bradley represented the intellectual New Yorker, Dave DeBusschere best represented the blue collar working man. Here was a guy that basically left everything he had on the court.

Dominique Wilkins Bio/Stats As we wade through the "Dead Zone" of American sports the doldrums spanning the end of the Super Bowl and the beginning of March Madness I couldn't think of a better topic to shake things up than a revisiting of the NBA's Top 50 Players. You remember the Top 50 don't you? It was six years ago, at the NBA's 1997 All-Star weekend where the League unveiled their list of who they believed were the 50 greatest NBA players of all time to coincide with the League's 50th Anniversary. The selections touched off a storm of debate, it was as if the NBA had just opened the doors to its Hall of Fame after 50 years of operation and 50 years worth of discussion ensued. It was brilliant. We sit here six years later and still some have issues with the list. So is it a mistake to add fuel to the fire and re-evaluate the list after just six years? While it's certainly not necessary now I'm sure waiting four years would only add merit to the inclusion of four of the five new faces I've nominated below but the game needs a little "juice" right now. And, to placate the old-timers, a new generation will get a lesson in the great players of the past through this exercise.

From ESPN NBA Hall of Famer Dave DeBusschere , who won two championships with the New York Knicks before becoming the youngest coach in league history, died of a heart attack on Wednesday at the age of 62. DeBusschere's exploits in the world of sports also included a stint as commissioner of the ABA and parts of two seasons as a major league pitcher with the Chicago White Sox in 1962-63. But it was in basketball that DeBusschere excelled. He gave up baseball after two seasons and a 3-4 record in 36 games to concentrate on his NBA career. Whenever people talk about the Championship Knicks of '70 and '73, they talk about Willis Reed's Knicks, or Clyde's Knicks, or Bradley's Knicks. At the National Basketball Association Draft Lottery that would determine Patrick Ewing's future, if not his own future, Dave DeBusschere preferred to depend on the power of a small prayer he had said at the 9:15 Mass this morning at St. Joseph's Church, not far from his Garden City, L.I., home.
"I said some prayers, like I always do," the Knicks' head of basketball operations was saying now about five hours later, "and then I thought, I'll be a little selfish and ask for Patrick Ewing in the lottery."
Dave DeBusschere had finally won something big-7 feet big. His prayer had been answered. So had the prayers of Knick fans everywhere, some of whom had booed Patrick Ewing when he appeared at Madison Square Garden with the Georgetown team in recent years in Big East Conference games. But yesterday God was a Knick fan. And now Patrick Ewing will be cheered at the Garden as few basketball players ever have.
Cheered, but also scrutinized and criticized, as so-called saviors always are. Don't assume that the Knicks will be instant champions with Patrick Ewing at center. But even as the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers go to it in the Eastern Conference playoff final, they have begun to hear Patrick Ewing's sneakersteps. "He puts us on another level, but that's all," Dave DeBusschere said. "Don't forget that Ralph Sampson and Akeem Olajuwon didn't win the title for Houston in their first year. But now we've got a guy to build a team around."
