NEWS Wilt Chamberlain, 1936 - 1999 Wilt Chamberlain, one of the most dominant players in the history of basketball and the only player to score 100 points in an NBA game, died Tuesday at 63. Known as "Wilt the Stilt" and "The Big Dipper," the 7-foot-1 Chamberlain dominated the NBA from 1959 through 1973, when he played for the Philadelphia (later the San Francisco) Warriors, the 76ers and the Lakers. He scored 31,419 points during his career, averaging 30.1 points for his career. In January 1998, Chamberlain returned to the University of Kansas, where his abbreviated college career ended in 1958. His jersey was raised to the rafters of Allen Fieldhouse, where Chamberlain starred for the Jayhawks. At the ceremony, Chamberlain said: "I've learned in life that you have to take the bitter with the sweet, and how sweet this is."
JOE POSNANSKI:
As it should be, Wilt's home is where his jersey is
Wilt Chamberlain did not know how much they loved him. See, he left Kansas a long, long time ago, in a different world, a different time, when the floor at Allen Fieldhouse was dirt, when black children and white attended different schools, before shot clocks, when Elvis had just begun rocking. Better known simply as "Wilt," Chamberlain died in his Bel Air , California home on October 12, allegedly as a result of a heart attack. Born August 21, 1936 at 11:27 pm EDT (Philadelphia, PA), Wilt epitomized what astrologers know about the sign Leo Ruled by the Sun , Leo needs recognition. Just as the Sun is the center of the universe and illuminates everything, Leo needs to be the center of his or her world. Wilt, of course, was the most dominant center to ever play the game of basketball. Orbiting the Sun we find Mars , planet of passion, action and athletics, also in Leo when Chamberlain was born. This double dose of lion power corresponds with his incredible strength and endurance, both on and off the court.

KING OF THE COURT
December 17, 1999
Spencer Michels remembers basketball star Wilt Chamberlain, who died yesterday in Los Angeles. SPENCER MICHELS: He was called "the big dipper" in part for his signature move, maneuvering over and around his defender, then gently laying the ball into the basket. He was also basketball's first celebrated dunker, slamming the ball with force over his opponents. At 7'1" and 275 pounds though some people said he weighed more Wilt Chamberlain was an unstoppable giant. By some accounts, he was the most dominant basketball player ever. WALT FRAZIER: I think he's the only superman, for sure, to ever play in the NBA, a guy that could go out and do what he wanted to do.
called Chamberlain the greatest offensive player he'd ever seen, and said "the fierceness of the competition bonded us as friends for eternity." Chamberlain had mixed feelings about his own career, in which his teams won just two NBA championships. He said he was disappointed that some people viewed him as a loser. And on his size, he said "Nobody roots for Goliath." A highlight of his career was the 100-point game he had in 1962. In his last interview, recorded in April, Chamberlain spoke of that magical game against the New York Knicks. WILT CHAMBERLAIN: The magic only started to happen when I got into the 70s, and when I got in the stands, which was around 4,000-some-odd people, which were a lot of people back in those days in that arena. They just started chanting "We want 100."

BOOK BYTES: Wilt, 1962
Jul 18, 2005, 8:15:00 AM
By Eileen Weir Book Bytes are short capsules of recently published books dealing with sports. Wilt, 1962
Gary M. Pomerantz
Crown Publishers, 2005
Gen X readers of Wilt, 1962 In Wilt, 1962 Pomerantz expertly weaves tales of American culture, deconstructed character studies of the men populating the Warriors and Knicks rosters, and suspenseful foreshadowing to reach the apogee of the 100-point historic feat. Fittingly for Chamberlain, not 99, not 101. 100. As described by Jack Kiser of the Philadelphia Daily News Effectively cementing Chamberlain as a bona fide celebrity, the 100-point tag plagued the man. Crediting teammates for submitting to his ambition, Chamberlain spent his remaining life living down the moment. When offered the game ball, spirited away by an impetuous Hershey youth, he refused it. Wilt, 1962 an intriguing cultural study and exciting chronicle of one of athletics defining moments by one of its most inscrutable stars. Eileen Weir, a native of Binghamton, NY, is a graduate of Le Moyne College (Syracuse, NY) with a Bachelors of Arts degree in English Literature and Communications. A public relations assistant for the Chiefs beginning in 1992, Weir served as manager of public information and media services until 2000. Currently the society columnist for The Examiner newspaper, she writes a weekly column chronicling the social and civic events of Eastern Jackson County.

Controversial Chamberlain Basketball Rebounds to $67,791
by Ed Pfeiffer
C ontroversy has always been an integral part of sports, so it is not surprising that it also occasionally spills over into sports memorabilia collecting. That happened last April at a Leland's absentee auction. The story begins on March 2, 1962, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, where the Philadelphia Warriors played a game led by their star, the late Wilt Chamberlain. "Wilt the Stilt" did not disappoint. He scored 100 points, a single-game record, sinking the final two points with just 46 seconds to go in the game. It is a record that has never been challenged and may never be. In fact, the runner-up record is also held by Chamberlain, who racked up 78 points in a 1961 game. Among the crowd that night was a Hershey native, 14-year-old Kerry Ryman. He says that, in the pandemonium that engulfed the floor at the end of the game, he took the basketball Chamberlain was holding and ran out of the hall. Gabe Basti, a security guard at the game, who chased Ryman but was not able to catch him, supports that story. So do Bob Payne, the Hershey Arena manager; Earl M. Whitmore, a local sportswriter who covered the game; and nine other men who were there as youngsters. But there is a conflicting version of the events that night. Some of the Warriors' former employees and some of Chamberlain's teammates say that immediately after the record-setting shot, the team's trainer substituted a second ball and took the first one to the clubhouse. Some of the players say they recall signing the ball, although no one has come forward with it.

Wilt Chamberlain Wilt Chamberlain was a giant among giants . His years spent at the University of Kansas marked the beginning of a career that spanned decades, changed the game of basketball, and set records that will probably stand forever.
When Wilt finally returned in 1998 to see his jersey retired to the rafters of Allen Field House, he was overwhelmed by the reception he received and showed himself to be a truly gracious, and very human, hero.

Out behind Carruth-O'Leary Hall, then a Kansas University dormitory, stood three of KU's most decorated athletes Bill Nieder, Al Oerter and Wilt Chamberlain. It was an autumn night in 1956 and the trio had assembled to determine who could put a 16-pound shot the greatest distance.
'Wilt the Stilt' dies at 63
Opponents thought he was unstoppable. One teammate called him indestructible. But Wilt Chamberlain was mortal after all. The former Kansas University All-American and NBA legend died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 63.
