    Special to ESPN.com
Wilt Chamberlain was always bigger than life, a mythical giant. At 7-foot-1 he was the most dominating offensive big man in basketball history. Although his accomplishments were often credited to his size, he was a marvelous athlete who possessed strength, stamina and speed. He could score on dunks, finger rolls and fallaway jumpers. Wilt Chamberlain could do it all as a player. You think it's a feat to score 50 points in an NBA game? Chamberlain averaged 50.4 points one season. He scored 100 points in one game. He scored at least 65 points 15 times; everybody else in NBA history combined has managed this feat just five times. Chamberlain won scoring titles his first seven seasons and averaged 30.1 for his career. He led the league in rebounding a record 11 times and averaged a record 22.9 boards per game for his career. He is the only center to lead the league in assists. He averaged more than 48 minutes a game one season. He never fouled out in 1,045 games. He won four MVPs. (And don't forget his most prodigious feat: Wilt claimed in one of his books to have slept with more than 20,000 women.)

Associated Press Quotes about basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain, who died Tuesday at age 63: "Wilt was one of the greatest ever, and we will never see another one like him." Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who broke Chamberlain's record to become the NBA's all-time leading scorer "When I started to play with him, he helped make me a better player. We seemed to have a real good feel together, I think it translated into a confidence with him. All players are generally judged by the number of championships they won. Unfortunately, he only won two. His greatness as a basketball player can't be questioned. He was fun, we used to laugh at him a lot, some of the things that would happen. I once told him, no one roots for Goliath." Jerry West, former teammate and current executive vice president of basketball operations with the Lakers

Published: April 24, 2005 Milestones in professional sports now make the headlines within hours and circulate on the Internet in a matter of minutes. Yet, as a forthcoming book reveals, there was an era when even the most extraordinary deed of an athlete might go virtually unnoticed by the media. In its 16th season, the NBA, unloved and unwatched, struggled to compete with the college game. Only 4124 people attended, plus a few local kids who snuck in. At halftime, the announcer gave away cigars and salamis. Yet the accomplishment shot into the sky like a flare. It signaled that basketball had changed in both the way it would be played and the men who would play it. It would be a game performed at greater speed, from in close, by players seemingly freed from the weight of gravity. In its 16th season, the NBA struggled to compete with the more established college game. Pro basketball was unloved and unwatched, with crowds so small, the joke went, that the announcers introduced the players and then the fans. Players smoked cigarettes (even at halftime) and washed their uniforms in hotel-room sinks. Occasionally, teams played in outlying towns like Hershey, Pa., in an attempt to attract new fans. He never boasted of the game in Hershey. If asked about it, he typically replied that he was prouder of his record 55 rebounds against rival Bill Russell of the Celtics. Chamberlain understood that the 100-point game fed criticism that he lusted for stardom ahead of victory.

His versatility when attacking the net, and the imposing personality he displayed as a defender separated Chamberlain from other players. His advantage was such that it compelled the NBA in 1964 to increase the distance between the free-throw line and the basket from 12 feet to 16 feet. A track and field star at the University of Kansas, Chamberlain was 7'1" and weighed 275 pounds, but he added more muscle mass during his career and eventually weighed in at 300 pounds of pure muscle. In 1955, the NBA created a territorial draft that allowed teams to claim players from the local university. Edward Gottlieb, one of the founders of the NBA, argued that since Chamberlain had grown up in Philadelphia, and there were no NBA basketball teams in Kansas, the Warriors could exercise their territorial rights. It was the only time a player was selected on the basis of his pre-university roots. After playing a year with the Harlem Globetrotters, Chamberlain donned a Philadelphia uniform in time for the 1959-60 season. The basketball world had eagerly awaited his debut, and he did not disappoint - in his first game against the New York Knicks, Chamberlain scored 43 points and grabbed 28 rebounds.

'Wilt the Stilt:' 23,000 points, 100 in a single NBA game Wilt Chamberlain was a giant of a man and a giant among giants. At 7'1", he towered over foes from high school in Philadelphia, in college at the University of Kansas, and in the National Basketball Association. He played for three NBA teams from 1959 through 1973. An incredible all-round athlete, not just a basketball player, Wilt was probably the first big man in history to be able to break 50 seconds in the 440 and win a Big Eight high jump title. He was lean, muscular, and graceful. Among Chamberlain's achievements on the court: the NBA's only 100 point game. He did it on March 2, 1962, while playing for Philadelphia against the Knicks. No wonder that Chamberlain, who died in October 1999, is still considered a great player, perhaps the best of all time. Wilt was so successful that some say the league actually made the 3-second rule just to harass him.

NBA Career statistics To critics who called him a "loser," Chamberlain retorted, "Take Jimmy Brown in football. Jimmy played seven years before he was on a winner. Did people call him a loser?" Chamberlain didn't begin playing basketball until he was in the seventh grade. At fifteen, he grew four inches in three months and he was 6-foot-11 when he entered high school. He became one of the most recruited players ever, with more than two hundred colleges wooing him after he led Philadelphia's Overbrook High School to three public school championships and two all-city titles. Already known as "Wilt the Stilt" and the "Big Dipper," two nicknames he hated, Chamberlain chose the University of Kansas and scored 52 points against Northwestern in his first game, a total he never surpassed as a collegian, partly because of the defenses used against him. He said later, "I was guarded so closely that I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life looking out at the world through wiggling fingers, forearms and elbows." Nevertheless, he averaged 29.9 points and 18.3 rebounds a game in three seasons and was twice named All-American center. Chamberlain left Kansas after his junior year and played with the Harlem Globetrotters for one season, then joined the Philadelphia Warriors of the NBA in 1959. The 7-foot-2, 275-pounder was Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player, setting league records for most points with 2,707, most rebounds with 1,941, and most points per game with 37.6.

    Introducing Wilt Chamberlain
Wilt Chamberlain began to play ball when he was in the 7th grade. He grew four inches in three months when he was 15 and was 6' 11" when he entered Philadelphia's Overbrook High School. Extremely agile for his age, he was on the cross-country team in high school as well as being a high jumper and shot-putter at the University of Kansas. He began his pro career with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958. He was considered an outstanding volleyball player and he ran in the Honolulu marathon during the '90s as well as competing in a 50-mile Canadian race. A gentle giant, the epitome of basketball, a giant with an ego to match, Wilt Chamberlain remained a lifetime bachelor. He claimed to have had sex with 20,000 women, which could mean spending more time in the bedroom than on the court. He figures that he had an average of 1.2 women a day from the time he was 15, women of every nationality and color, women of such quality that he said most guys would have proposed to them on the first date, and none of them married.

Biography of Basketball Player and Athlete Wilt Chamberlain
About the biography of the famous basketball player and athlete Wilt Chamberlain, history and information.
Wilt Chamberlain Awesome in size, strength, and athletic prowess, Wilt Chamberlain has experienced an unparalleled basketball career. He was the game's most devastating force and, almost befittingly in the turbulent times he dominated, its most controversial subject. Chamberlain (born August 21, 1936) attended Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, then Kansas University. At Kansas U., he scored 52 points in his varsity debut against Northwestern. In 2 varsity seasons (1957-1958) he averaged 29.9 points and 18.3 rebounds. The Jayhawks lost to North Carolina (by one point) in the 1957 NCAA finals, and that game has haunted Wilt ever since. It gave birth to his image as a "loser." Professionally, he played with the Harlem Globetrotters (1959), bypassing his senior year at Kansas U.; Philadelphia-San Francisco Warriors (1960-1964); Philadelphia 76ers (1965-1968); Los Angeles Lakers (1969-1973). He was drafted originally as a 1st round territorial choice of the Warriors. His playing statistics are staggering. He averaged 50.4 points in 1962, abetted by a record 100-point game against the New York Knicks. He was the 1st pro to amass 30,000 career points and shoot 70% from the field (72.7). He grabbed 55 rebounds in one game and owns the all-time standard of 23,924. He was unstoppable in close, actually scaring people with his ferocious dunk shots.

Basketball History Wilt Chamberlain Gets 100 Points Part 1
About Wilt Chamberlain breaking 100 points in an NBA game, history and first hand account of the basketball event.
THE CHAMPIONS REPORT ON THEIR BIGGEST MOMENTS Wilt Chamberlain's Big Night (1962) An average team in the National Basketball Association will frequently score 100 or more points in a game. But only once in the history of the NBA has one player scored 100 points in a single game. The man to accomplish this extraordinary feat was Wilt Chamberlain, then of the Philadelphia Warriors, in a game against the New York Knicks on Mar.3, 1962, in Hershey, Pa. One of the first of the "big men" who now dominate the NBA, the 7 ft. 2 in. Chamberlain was in his third pro season at the time and already struggling with the labels that were to follow him throughout his careeruncoachable, not a team player, can't make free throws, can't win the big ones (as if he were solely responsible for his team's performance). His critics, of whom there were many, cited his 100-point game as an example of his excess and his narrow abilities. There may be some sort of muddled logic here, but it is immediately undone by the sheer immensity of the accomplishment. The morning of game day, Wilt was stumbling back to his hotel for a few hours' sleep after an all-night visit to a lady friend in New York. But he was sidetracked by a pinball game that his teammates were playing. In a portent of things to come, he scored a phenomenal 2,040 (the doorman, who had been there for 15 years, told them the highest he'd ever seen was 1,800) and won a dinner for two from his incredulous teammates.
