Wilt Chamberlain, one of the most dominant players in NBA history, died Tuesday, October 12 at the age of 63. Chamberlain’s stature in the game was as big as he was. He stood 7-1 and towered over foes from high school in Philadelphia through college at the University of Kansas and finally in the NBA, where he played for three teams from 1959 through 1973. Among Chamberlain’s many achievements was the NBA’s only 100-point game, which came March 2, 1962, while playing for Philadelphia against the Knicks. Chamberlain led the NBA in scoring for each of his first seven seasons and finished his career with a 30.1 scoring average. photo gallery career stats the 100-point game wilt chooses kansas ...

The biggest coach of all: Wilt the rebuilt stilt by Doug Smith
Newsday
November 1973
SAN DIEGO The San Diego Conquistadors held a morning shooting practice before their game with the Nets last Saturday. It was an idea that San Diego coach Wilt Chamberlain borrowed from Los Angeles Lakers coach Bill Sharman. It also was an idea that didn't quite appeal to Chamberlain when he was playing for the Lakers. Billy Paultz, the Nets' 6-11 center, wandered into the practice session, and asked some of the San Diego players, "Is Wilt going to be here?" Tim Bassett, the Conquistadors' 6-8 rookie from Georgia, responded with an incredulous look, then said, "Wilt show up for a shoot around? No way." Stan Albeck, Chamberlain's assistant, directed the half-hour practice. The head coach, it seems, is just another commuter. Wilt flies down to San Diego from his home in Los Angeles when the Conquistadors have a game. He often does the same on practice days. But on game days, the shooting practices are in the morning and they last only 20 or 30 minutes, so Chamberlain stays home and catches a late afternoon flight to San Diego. Perhaps in a few years Chamberlain will write another book that will answer the second question Paultz asked the San Diego players: "What kind of coach is Wilt?"

Wilt Chamberlain *This date marks the birth of Wilt Chamberlain in 1936. He was an African-American basketball player who won seven consecutive NBA scoring titles and is the NBA's third all-time leading scorer.
He was born Wilton Norman Chamberlain in Philadelphia. Chamberlain had four sisters Barbara, Margaret, Selina and Yvonne, and two brothers Wilbert and Oliver. Heralded (at the time) as the best prep player in the nation, Chamberlain led his Overbrook High School team to a 58-3 record and two city championships. Scoring 52 points in his 1956 college debut for the University of Kansas, Chamberlain led the Jayhawks to a 24-3 record and the national finals. Though known for his surpassing height, it was Chamberlain's all-around athletic skills that made him a premier performer. In 1962, as a professional, Chamberlain averaged 50.4 points a game, a year later he scored 100 points in a single game against the New York Knickerbockers.
Chamberlain played for the NBA's Philadelphia Warriors, the Golden State Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers. He won the league's Most Valuable Player award four times, and was an All-Star every year of his career except 1970. In addition to his prolific scoring, Chamberlain is also the leading rebounder in NBA history averaging 22.9 a game. He led the league in that category for 11 seasons, and set the single game mark with 55. Chamberlain won championships with the 76ers in 1967 and the Lakers in 1972.

    Basketball legend Chamberlain dies

    Chamberlain's 1962 100-point one-game haul is still a record
Basketball great Wilt Chamberlain has died at the age of 63. The NBA legend was a dominant figure in the sport during the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1962 he scored more than 100 points in a game, a single player record which still stands. This decade he caused controversy with boasts of his sexual exploits, claiming to have had sex with 20,000 women. The giant centre, who was seven feet one inch tall, was known as "Wilt the Stilt" and "The Big Dipper". He was found dead at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday, and is believed to have suffered a heart attack. Chamberlain's 14-year career featured a series of record-breaking exploits:
    • He is the NBA's second-highest scorer with 31,419 points
    • One of only two men named MVP and rookie of the year in the same season (1959)
    • He led the NBA in scoring seven straight seasons, 1960 to 1966
    • Chamblerlain was also MVP for three seasons between 1966 and 1968
    • His 100-point record was scored in the Philadelphia Warriors' 169-147 defeat of the New York Knicks in 1962
    • Member of the LA Lakers' championship team in 1971-72, which set an NBA record of 33 straight wins that still stands.

Basketball Wilt Chamberlain Wilt Chamberlain was a giant among giants . His years spent at the University of Kansas marked the beginning of a career that spanned decades, changed the game of basketball, and set records that will probably stand forever.
When Wilt finally returned in 1998 to see his jersey retired to the rafters of Allen Field House, he was overwhelmed by the reception he received and showed himself to be a truly gracious, and very human, hero.
This is the story of that very special day. See clips of a highlight reel for the 1957 KU Basketball team's run to the Final Four.
