"If there was anybody who typified the superb athletic talent in the NBA," wrote Stan Isaacs of Newsday, "it was Joe Caldwell, the demon jumper of the Atlanta Hawks. Now Caldwell is in the ABA and the new league is all the better for it." . . . Jumpin'Joe is, indeed, a magnificent athlete . . . Gets himself up with bigger fellows, but is so agile he can ruin an opposing guard . . . Led Cougars in scoring in 1970-71 with 23.31 ppg . . . Outstanding in 1971 ABA All-Star Game played before Cougars fans in Greensboro . . . Some thought he, not Mel Daniels, should've been the MVP in that game . . . In 1971-72 a knee brace became a necessary evil . . . He tore ligaments on outside portion of his right knee . . . "A basketball player depends upon those muscles to give him push when he jumps," says Caldwell. "I don't have that blast anymore." . . . In carpet business in off-season, plans to make career of it.

The league made its debut on November 29 as Nashville defeated Birmingham 51-50 with Nashville captain Dave Scobey scoring a game-high 18 points. Montgomery, led by player-coach Lenny Rader finshed with the league's best record in the regular season at 43-6. The Memphis club relocated to Mobile, AL where Bob Murphy would lead the league in scoring; and the Gadsden team finished the season in Bessemer, AL. A round robin playoff tournament between first-place Montgomery, third-place Nashville and fourth-place Birmingham (the second-place club, Jackson declined to participate due to player injuries) began on March 5 with Nashville and Montgomery advancing to the league championship series. After losing the opening game of the series, Montgomery won the next three to claim the league title. Bessemer, Birmingham, Jackson and Mobile all dropped out of the league following the season and the Birmingham Steelers, Laurel Oilers and New Orleans Sports (who had played in the Professional Basketball League of America as the Hurricanes) were recruited to bring the league back up to five clubs.
