ASU To Induct Joe Caldwell Into Pac-10 Hall Of Honor Caldwell part of 1964 gold-medal Olympic team in Tokyo. Oct. 27, 2004 Arizona State Athletic Director Gene Smith and Men's Basketball Coach Rob Evans have announced that the Sun Devil family will induct Joe Caldwell into the Pac-10 Hall of Honor in the spring of 2005. "Joe Caldwell is a great example to our current players of not only excelling on the court collegiately and internationally, but understanding that education is so important," says Arizona State Athletic Director Gene Smith of Caldwell, who finished his ASU degree 23 years after his collegiate career was completed with a B.A. in selected studies in 1997. "He is a tremendous role model for all current and future Sun Devils. We are thrilled to honor him and include him with Byron Scott , Ned Wulk and Fat Lever as inductees into our Pac-10 Hall of Honor."

History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith , was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

History
On February 1, 1967, promoter Dennis Murphy announced that he and a group of investors had formed the American Basketball Association, to begin play that fall with ten teams: The Anaheim Amigos, Dallas Chaparrals, Houston Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Muskies, New Jersey Americans, New Orleans Buccaneers, Oakland Oaks, Pittsburgh Pipers, and a still unnamed team in Kansas City. As it turned out, the Kansas City team was replaced by the Denver Rockets (later the Nuggets), and the ABA added an 11th franchise, the Kentucky Colonels, in March. The NBA's first great star, George Mikan , was named commissioner of the new league. Mikan came up with the idea of using a red, white, and blue ball. The ABA's also decided to use the three-point shot that had been pioneered by the short-lived American Basketball League. The first real confrontation with the NBA came in 1968, when Oakland signed

Even though head coach Hank Iba had a spectacular pool of talent, the 1964 U.S. team began competition wary that their reign as the world's best may be on the line. With the Soviets having made great strides on offense, the USSR was considered a co-favorite for the Olympic gold.

The boycott never happened and black players, who since the 1956 Olympics had become an important part of the U.S. Olympic basketball program, secured five places on the 1964 USA team. Finding the path through the preliminary competition relatively easy, the U.S. defeated, in order, Australia, 78-45; Finland, 77-51; Peru, 60-45; Uruguay, 83-28; Yugoslavia, 69-61; Brazil, 86-53, and South Korea, 116-50.

1971-72 Topps Basketball Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps went back to a standard (2.5" by 3.5") card size for the 1971-72 basketball card set, which featured ABA players for the first time. The inclusion of those players caused the size of the set to increase to a record 233 cards. The first 144 cards are NBA stars and subset cards while 145-233 are for the ABA. Common ABA players - and this is true for all ABA cards Topps printed - trade at a premium to their NBA counterparts. The 10¢ wax packs once again featured 10 cards, but also a "trio" sticker insert that looked a lot (in retrospect) like the ' 80-81 Topps cards but with a black border. There were 26 different trio (so-called because there were three detachable panels on each; see picture below) sticker cards and the #23A and 24A ABA logo stickers are hard to come by in top condition because they were not double printed (as the easier-to-find #22A was) and kids (like me) used them as stickers. The front of the very colorful cards feature a posed photo with one of a number of vivid colors as the background with a white border. The team name is at the top in a wacky font that must have pissed off purists but seems oh-so-appropriate to a child of the Super70s like me. Despite this, it is a fairly clean design with no cartoon players or big basketballs cluttering the front as in past years.

1973-74 Topps Basketball Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps stuck with the standard sized card format for '73-74. The cards were once again distributed in 10¢ packs of 10 cards. This year's inserts were a set of 33 team stickers, which are more valuable than you might assume considering they are just useless logos and not player photos. After several years of overly colorful basketball card sets, Topps toned it down a bit for their '73-74 set. The photography seems to be similar to past issues, with most players posed in front of walls. This may mean that Topps was originally going to give the cards the colorful airbrushed backgrounds of previous years but decided against it. While the colorful cards of the past may have been too colorful for some, these backgrounds were about as interesting as Al Capone's vault. The cards featured the team nickname at the bottom under the photograph. This was once again a slight problem since Houston and Denver both had teams called the Rockets. The Houston players got the word "Houston" printed in black letters over the net on the bottom left of the card. Not so for Denver Rockets cards which simply say "Rockets." The all-star subset cards feature action photography, but lose points for putting an unnecessary head shot of the player in a circle over the action shot.

What Can Happen When Men and Women Commit to Be and Make Disciples for Christ Colonel Barry Willey, USA (Ret.),
PART ONE
Choosing the Harder Right
As Paul explained it in a letter to me:
The rest is that Paul Stanley has powerfully touched hundreds if not thousands of men's lives through this kind of ministry of multiplication. Paul resigned his Army commission in 1970 and joined the Navigator's ministry, for whom he now still works as a senior executive. Theirs is a minsitry of discipleship...of faithful men teaching other faithful men the ways of Christ. Gwyn Vaughan, another committed officer, came along and picked up the ball from Paul, with the support of ministries like the Officers' Christian Fellowship-another group, different in scope than the Navigators, but equally dedicated to helping build cadets into disciples for Christ and sharing their faith with others through prayer, fellowship and Bible study.
New Cadet Shine At West Point, Jon was embarked on the experience of a lifetime, with challenges that would stagger most people his age, but he would quickly rise to the occasion and establish himself as a pillar of moral character and spiritual strength that would powerfully and positively change all those he encountered.
