The Rodman File
Dateline: 02/12/97 Our theme song:
And now, a word from our sponsor: We now return to our regularly scheduled programming: Dennis Rodman's eleven game absence from the Bulls allows a good look at his overall effect on the team. Since Rodman is such a unique talent, I have historically had a very difficult time quantifying his effect . Given the number of teams he has played for and the players he has been traded for, it's clear that I'm not the only person with this difficulty. Rodman's absence actually only allows us to take a look at his value relative to his replacements, Toni Kukoc and Jason Caffey. The abilities of these players are much easier to quantify than those of Rodman, so just by comparison, we can get some idea of the value of the Worm. So what happened while Rodman was out? The Bulls continued to dominate, going 9-2 and losing both games on the road to very tough teams. Among their quality victories were wins over New York, Cleveland, Seattle, and Portland. They also thoroughly dominated their opponents whose records were below 0.500, winning by an average of 19. The Bulls rebounding dropped off while he was gone, something I have found every time Rodman has missed games. But because Rodman has been often unwilling to shoot, he has been a negative influence on the team offense, just not this time. The Bulls' shooting barely changed, going up less than 1% during Rodman's absence.

A few public figures have stepped forward recently and lifted the veil on depression so that we can see its face, but it remains a stretch for our imagination to picture it as Wendy Williams and Ricky Williams and Jason Caffey. The shroud cleaves to athletes, hiding their pain. 'A Total Miracle': Pill Lets Beauty And Joy Shine In
Wendy Williams can remember barely being in her teens and telling her parents offhandedly that she wished to die. Her mother and father were mortified that their youngest daughter felt that way. They didn't know what to say. So Williams threw herself off platforms. She turned to diving for solace. Leaving Behind A Fast Track To Nowhere
Derrick Adkins was at the finish line of a track in Berlin in the fall of 1996, nursing a hangover and the humiliation of a sound defeat in the hurdles, when he had an epiphany. If the depression he had suffered from since childhood didn't kill him, all the alcohol he was consuming to drown his melancholy surely would. Trying To Handle Confinements Of Fame
Ricky Williams' anxiety over what was being said and written about him was a stream that fed into depression. He didn't understand it at the time, but the stresses he was experiencing had triggered a chemical reaction in his brain.

NBA Showdown
Setting: The title pretty much tells you what this game is about right? American basketball teams.
Game Play: NBA Showdown is a remarkably quick game to learn and play, and yet it still keeps you interested and thinking. It relies heavily on dice rolls, but card play is central to the mechanic, so that's okay. All told, this is one heck of a game.
To start off, each player (AKA coach) brings to the game a team of players worth no more than 5000 points. This can be anywhere from 5 players up, but your first five players must have no more than 4000 points. Wow, balance! You need to have at least one Center, Shooting Guard, Point Guard, Power Forward and Small Forward. They recommend 8 players, with your first five hovering right around 4000 points and the other three bringing you right up to 5000. That's a very good way to do it. You'll also bring a deck of Strategy cards, at least 40.
Now, each player lays out their starting 5 and places them head-to-head with the other player's, matching Center to Center and so on. Peacably determine who goes first. Draw seven cards from your Strategy deck and you're ready to start the first quarter. The first player chooses one of his positions, say, the Center. He compares his cards Power and Speed to the opposing player's card. Whichever one he has a better advantage in is the stat that position will use to score points in the first quarter. For example, your center has 12 Speed and 9 Power. Your opponent's has 13 Speed and 6 Power. You choose Power, because you have three more Power and one less Speed than the opposing player.

The Underdog Teams!
A word on the NBA Playoffs One spring Friday in Chicago, Illinois, I was strolling down Madison with a male friend of mine near lunchtime. "Ahhh." He sighed, attention only fractionally on my heated response to his opinions on higher education. "I love spring. Undoubtedly, spring is my favorite time of year. " Abruptly, he left my side to hold a door for a young blond woman. "Oh no, my pleasure. Yes, yes, you have a wonderful day too. Isn't this weather just fantastic?" Back at my side, eyes on the passing parade of blazerless buisnesswomen with their shoulders slung back, smiles on their faces and the bounce in their step rippling through every curve, he explained. "Every year, I watch with growing anticipation as the weather warms. The birds are out. Everyone is smiling. There is magic in the air, you know? That's what spring is to me. All the layers of winter melting away to reveal life's most beautiful things." Spring is in the air. The sunglasses are dusted off, Tivas and Birkenstocks are slipped on and constricting undergarments slipped off. Spring's fandom swells and the Gloomy-Gus winter enthusiasts are put away with the gloves, hats and skis. Opinions as to why this is the greatest season in our season arsenal abound. Sidewalk cafés have opened and we can all sit out under the stars slow-drinking a pitcher - lazily pleasurable. Baseball season is starting - enchantingly American. Fresh fruits and vegetables overflow grocery store bins - culinarily delightful. Spring seems, for most people, to be about rebirth and beginnings.
