He collected four rings, nearly completed his degree and had a "pretty hot" girlfriend. So when Brown announced Friday that he'll enter June's NBA draft, he wasn't kidding about facing his next challenge. Illinois' junior guard will enter the draft, but has not hired an agent. If he's projected to be chosen lower than he'd like, Brown says he'll be back in Champaign come fall - but he's hoping to go pro. (June 10, 2004) – Syracuse sophomore Demetris Nichols is one of 24 student-athletes invited to try out for the 2004 USA Basketball World Championship For Young Men Team. The players were selected by the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee, chaired by former Virginia Athletic Director and Coach Terry Holland, and announced on June 10. The USA National Team Trails and training camps is scheduled for July 16-23 in East Rutherford, N.J. Athletes eligible for selection to this age-based team include anymale who is a U.S. citizen and is 20-years-old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1984). Nichols had a productive freshman year with the Orange. He played in 26 games, earned 15 starts, and averaged 4.2 points and 2.2 rebounds an outing. He had a career-best 17 points at Providence. Seven return from the 2003 USA Men's Junior World Championship Team that journeyed to Thessaloniki,Greece, and finished fifth with a 7-1 record, a mark that tied gold medalist Australia for the best record in the tournament. The USA squad also went 5-0 to win gold at the 2003 Global Games in Dallas, Texas. This season, it actually will be. After losing a sixth consecutive ACC-Big Ten challenge by dropping seven of nine head-to-head games, the Big Ten was regularly characterized as "weak" in 2004-05. Though Illinois spent nearly the entire season ranked as America's best club, the conference's also-rans were routinely overlooked and under-appreciated. Excepting the Fighting Illini, the Big Ten last season generated national interest only thanks to the off-court antics of disgraced Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien, Michigan guard Daniel Horton, and former Iowa star Pierre Pierce. Ohio State shocked Illinois in Columbus, preventing Bruce Weber's club from becoming the first Big Ten team to go undefeated in 29 years and enabling Thad Matta to make an effective pitch to four of the top 25 players in the Class of 2006, including Greg Oden. On Selection Sunday, five conference clubs were invited to go dancing. Wisconsin, Michigan State and Illinois subsequently won three, four and five games respectively before losing to national champion North Carolina. Owing to the departures of Wisconsin's Mike Wilkinson, Sharif Chambliss, and Zach Morley, Michigan State's Alan Anderson, Kelvin Torbert and Chris Hill, and Illinois' Deron Williams, Luther Head and Roger Powell, the Big Ten won't repeat last March's Madness this spring.
