ST. LOUIS Bruce Weber didn't want it to end for Illinois , not like this. Advertisement As the final seconds slipped away on a season that was exhilarating, poignant and one victory short of the ultimate goal, the coach with the scratchy voice couldn't do anything but reflect on the journey. What a ride it was. The Illini won 37 times, tying the NCAA record for victories in a season. But they ended with a loss, 75-70 to North Carolina in the championship game Monday night. "It was so much fun," Weber said. "I cried last night in our meeting. I knew it would be our last meeting with this team and I didn't want it to end. I'm sad that it's over." Less than a month ago, Weber endured a gut-wrenching tragedy. His mother suffered chest pains while picking up her tickets for the Big Ten Tournament. A few hours later, Dawn Weber died in surgery, the victim of a torn aorta just below her heart. Bruce Weber and Illinois finish with an NCAA-record 37 victories.

What Can Brown Do For You?
Leave a Comment Send to Friend Print This Story By Damian Greene I don't know about you, but I'm exhausted. This was by far the wildest weekend of tournament basketball I have ever seen and it's all because of two of the best point guards in the country. As a Michigan State and Big 10 Fan, there were lots of scenarios I was envisioning as the Elite Eight was being played, such as the possibility of having three Big 10 teams in the Final Four and Wisconsin did not disappoint as they played North Carolina as well as could be expected.

Dee Brown: Don't enter the NBA Draft
skip to navigation Dee Brown, here's a heartfelt plea from a lifelong Illini fan: Don't enter the NBA draft Dee Brown has thrown his name into the the lot of the NBA draft but kept the back door open by not hiring an agent. That was prudent. Now it's time for him to reevaluate his stance that going in the second round is fine. This was a surprise to me and to Mark Tupper because it's an injudicious stance which seems out of character. Dee Brown can be a solid first-rounder, but he still needs to prove that his game will work in the big league. He needs to return to Illinois for his senior season. I have absolutely loved watching Dee's three years at Illinois. His personality is vibrant and magnetic, and his energy on the court has sparked the Illini to victory on several occasions when they were in the doldrums. Despite these qualities, I'm afraid that Brown will be a bust if he goes in this year's draft. Specifically:
  • Point guards in the NBA must be able to drive and dish. As the season wore on, Dee relied increasingly on his outside shot and was ineffective in scoring near the basket. In the NBA, if he's not a scoring threat, big guys won't come to help on Brown when he drives, limiting his effectiveness to set up his frontcourt for easy scoring opportunities. Dee Brown earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2005, but I'm still unconvinced about his ability to guard the post-up. He'll have to do this against stronger, taller guards in the League.

USA Basketball Juniors Beat Lithuania
Daniel Brown’s Record-Setting 47 Points Carries USA in Junior World Championship Tournament THESSALONIKI, Greece (July 15, 2003) In a game of a lifetime, Daniel “Dee” Brown (Illinois/Maywood, Ill.) poured in a USA Junior World Championship record 47 points, including 19 of his team’s 21 fourth quarter points, as the USA remained undefeated and improved to 5-0 after fighting back from 14 points down to post a heart stopping 87-84 victory over Lithuania (3-2) Tuesday afternoon.
The win improved the USA to 2-0 in quarterfinals play and leaves it on top of the Group G standings. However, the United States needs a victory over Wednesday’s final quarterfinals game against Australia (4-1, 1-1 in quarterfinals play) to insure it advances to the medal round semifinals. Australia in quarterfinals play earlier today recorded a narrow 83-82 victory over Puerto Rico (2-3, 0-2 in quarterfinals play).
“That was a great international basketball game. Lithuania was definitely ready to play. We were lucky to win the game because I don’t think we were ready to play and “Dee” Brown saved us,” stated Ernie Kent, the USA mentor. “I can’t say enough about “Dee” Brown. Anybody that can knock down nine threes and all of them big threes, that tells me a lot about his character and type of player he is. We called a ton of plays for him down the stretch that gave him an opportunity to make buckets because he was the only one that was really shooting it very well from the perimeter.”

USA Juniors Beat Slovenia
USA Juniors Out-Grit Slovenia 77-72 For Sixth Win THESSALONIKI, Greece (July 19, 2003) Daniel Brown (Illinois/Maywood, Ill.) and Paul Davis (Michigan State/Rochester, Mich.) scored six and four points respectively in a game deciding 12-3 fourth quarter run to lead the USA Junior World Championship Team (6-1) to a hard fought 77-72 victory over Slovenia Saturday afternoon in Thessaloniki, Greece.
With the win, the USA’s second over Slovenia in the championship, the USA will conclude play at the Junior World Championship facing Puerto Rico on Sunday in a game to decide fifth place. In quarterfinal play July 14, the U.S. handed Puerto Rico a 106-70 setback. Puerto Rico defeated Turkey 85-78 on Saturday to advance to the fifth place game.
The USA was eliminated from the medal round semifinals after losing to Australia Wednesday. Despite ending quarterfinal play in a three-way tie with Group E opponents Australia and Lithuania, based on the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) tie breaking formula of the point differential between the three tied teams for their games against each other, Australia earned the Group’s number one seed, Lithuania ranked second and USA fell to third.

Illini's Brown Makes Himself Eligible For NBA Draft
POSTED: 8:33 am PDT May 6, 2005 Champaign, IL University of Illinois guard Dee Brown has made himself eligible for the 2005 NBA Draft. However, he has not signed with an agent, leaving open the possibility of returning to the Illini for his senior season. "We certainly understand Dee and his family's desire to more closely explore his NBA options and gain a better understanding of where his position would be in the draft," Illinois head coach Bruce Weber said. "We will continue to educate Dee about his standing through feedback from his team workouts, and we hope that whatever decision he ultimately makes, that it's in his best interest for his long-term future."

Broken Foot Slows Down Dee's NBA Dream
By John Brumbaugh
Date: Jun 9, 2005
Dee Brown broke his foot on Wednesday night in Chicago, and it will probably force him to withdraw his name from consideration for the 2005 NBA Draft. Selfishly, this was a day of happiness, but it was also a day of sadness as Dee Brown would not get to realize his dream of playing in the NBA, at least this year.
In one quick moment on Wednesday evening, Dee Brown ’s dream of being drafted by the NBA came to a quick end (for this season) with a broken foot that he sustained after just ten minutes of game time in his first game of the Chicago Pre Draft Camp. What that means for the University of Illinois Men’s Basketball program is that the most popular player amongst fans will be returning to Champaign for his senior season. Like many Illinois fans, I am selfishly happy that Dee is coming back to Champaign and furthering the stamp that he will hold as one of the All-Time Fan Favorites in Champaign.
The problem with me selfishly being happy that Dee is returning to Illinois is that Dee missed out on a chance for his dream, and it will have to wait one more year. Dee Brown won the Big Ten’s Player of the Year Award, the Defensive Player of the Year Award in the Conference, and was named Sporting News’ Player of the Year. All of these accolades will be tough for him to repeat in Champaign next season, so one might say that his stock would have never been higher than it was right now heading into the NBA Draft.

Both were finalists for last year's award, given to outstanding player
SportsTicker LOS ANGELES - Senior guards J.J. Redick of Duke and Dee Brown of Illinois, two of five finalists for the 2004-05 John R. Wooden award, lead a list of 50 preseason candidates this season. The candidates were chosen based on last year's individual and team performance.  The award, honoring college basketball's player of the year since 1976, is announced at the Final Four. Utah center Andrew Bogut was last year's recipient after averaging 20.4 points and 12.4 rebounds while shooting 62 percent for the Utes, who lost to Kentucky in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Duke center Sheldon Williams and Boston College forward Craig Smith join Redick and Brown as the only preseason candidates named to last year's official voting ballot. Twelve NCAA conferences are represented, including eight players from the Atlantic Coast Conference and seven players apiece from the Big East and Pac 10. The Wooden Award committee will cut the list to 30 at midseason and the 10-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced on March 28.

No draft for T.J.
Dee Brown also out.
Tuesday, June 28, 2005
T.J. Parker, citing an ankle injury, has withdrawn his name from the NBA draft and announced he will pursue a professional contract in Europe for next season.
Another Big Ten underclassmen also withdrew from the draft for medical reasons. All Big Ten shooting guard Dee Brown of Illinois announced he will return for his junior year under head coach Bruce Weber.
The Wildcats must wish Brown was headed to the NBA. Brown scored 37 points and dished out 18 assists in three games against NU in 2005.
T.J. On Knicks Short List?
Saturday, June 18, 2005 Former NU point guard T.J. Parker worked out with the New York Knicks Friday in front of hall of fame point guard and General Manager Isaiah Thomas. The New York Daily News Saturday featured the headline, "Knicks May Point to Younger Parker." The Knicks have two first round picks and a second rounder to spend in the NBA draft June 28th. Most mock-draft websites have the Knickerbockers taking a variety of guards, from Illinois' Luther Head to Pitt's Carl Krauser (who also worked out with the Knicks Friday) but not Parker.

The golfer never forgets a shot. He can talk about the 6-iron he faded over that nasty bunker on No. 6. He can describe the double-break in that squirrely 30-foot putt he sank for par. And that's just from today's round. Give him enough time, and he will remember holes played on courses visited years ago. Dee Brown is not a golfer. His game moves fast. It is a blur to him, just as it is for those of us who watch. Something happens something he makes happen, as quickly as we change channels with our remotes and he is on to whatever comes next. He can explain the general theory regarding how he came to rip the basketball three times in a row from Michigan Wolverines, delaying Illinois' first loss until another day, but he can offer no details to help reconstruct the moment. "I play so many games," he says. "I can't remember things offhand. I just play ball."
