Mit der Nationalmannschaft der USA konnte dieser Traum nicht in Erfüllung gehen, da für diese Auswahl nur die aktuellen und zukünftigen Superstars (und somit Werbeträger) der Liga berücksichtigt werden. Kein Platz also für einen soliden Rollenspieler wie den 2,29 Meter großen Shot-Blocker. Viele Wege aber führen nach Rom ? in diesem Falle natürlich Athen ? und so ist es auch bei Shawn Bradley. Bradley kam am 22.03.1972 in Deutschland auf die Welt, sein Geburtsort ist das pfälzische Städtchen Landstuhl. Hier war sein Vater, ein US-Soldat, vor etwa dreißig Jahren stationiert. Deshalb war es dem Mannschaftskameraden von Dallas-Topscorer und Nationalspieler Dirk Nowitzki möglich, im Sommer 2001 die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft zu beantragen. Das Einbürgerungsverfahren wurde zügig abgeschlossen, so dass der Bundestrainer des DBB, Henrik Dettmann, den Hünen bereits bei der EM 2001 in der Türkei einsetzen konnte. Dort wurde er zwar nicht zum überragenden deutschen Spieler, aber zur wichtigen Stütze in der Defense, der durchaus Anteil am guten 4. Platz der DBB-Auswahl hatte. In bisher neun offiziellen Länderspielen für Deutschland kam Bradley auf durchschnittlich 4,8 Punkte.  Shawn Bradley wurde im letzten Jahr wegen Verletzung und aus Versicherungsgründen nicht für den WM-Kader berücksichtigt, spielt aber in den Planungen für die EM 2003 in Schweden weiterhin eine Rolle. Denn wenn der Hüne fit ist, kann er der deutschen Mannschaft in jedem Fall helfen. In der aktuellen NBA-Saison präsentiert sich der ?Funkturm? gut wie schon lange nicht mehr. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass er einmal eine komplette Spielzeit ohne Verletzung durchspielen kann. Vor dem Start seiner NBA-Karriere spielte Shawn Bradley am Brigham Young College in der NCAA. Hier kam er auf Durchschnittswerte von 14,8 Punkten, 7,7 Rebounds und 5,2 (!) Blocks pro Spiel. In dieser Kategorie führte er die NCAA an und konnte David Robinsons Rekord von 14 geblockten Würfen in einem Spiel einstellen ? und das als ?Freshman?, also als Neuling in der Liga. Als Lohn wurde er zum ?Player of the Year? in seiner Conference gewählt und verhalf seinem Team zur Teilnahme am NCAA Tournament.
