Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.

Becoming number one is easier than remaining number one.

Every time I have some moment on a seashore, or in the mountains, or sometimes in a quiet forest, I think this is why the environment has to be preserved.

For a long time, I operated under the Chinese proverb that there are four kinds of leaders: those who you laugh at, those who you hate, those who you love and those who you don't even know that they're leaders. Bill Bradley I believe we need a new kind of leadership, a leadership that puts the people front and center, not the president. Bill Bradley Imagination allows us to escape the predictable. It enables us to reply to the common wisdom that we cannot soar by saying, "Just watch!" Bill Bradley Leaders should be collaborative, modest, and generous. Bill Bradley Leadership is unlocking people's potential to become better.

It sounds crazy, I know, but throughout his entire 10-year career as an NBA superstar with the New York Knicks a quarter-century ago, Bradley actually refused to endorse products or engage in any of the other immensely profitable commercial ventures so readily available to celebrated athletes.
Look at this from Bradley's 1976 book, "Life on the Run":
"Perhaps I wanted no part of an advertising industry which created socially useless personal needs and then sold a product to meet those needs .... More probably I wanted to keep my experience of basketball ... as innocent and unpolluted by commercialism as possible .... Taking money for hawking products [would have] demeaned my experience of the game. I cared about basketball. I didn't give a damn about perfumes, shaving lotions, clothes, or special foods."
Imagine that coming from Tiger Woods or any of today's other superstars who make millions for helping merchandisers peddle goods and services to impressionable youngsters and star-struck adults.

    I Carried Bill Bradley's Water
    by Coultas W. Kemp
Character formation is a layering process that's assembled from birth to death. It's not instant, but a mantle woven from an individual's successes and failures. It can be seen in a simple event, by the way a man treats those who can do nothing for him. Character can be better explained through the intricate stitches made by time's alterations. When all else is lost, character is the fabric left to insulate a man when he's down. As a high school junior in 1960, I was up against some tough competition during tryouts on the basketball court. In a clumsy maneuver I tripped myself and lay licking my wounds. My lips couldn't figure out if the salty taste in my mouth was blood, sweat or tears, but when I looked up, I saw an encouraging face close to mine. Embarrassment wrapped me in its red-hot cloak of confusion, and I wondered if there might be a hole big enough to crawl into. An enormous palm appeared above my face when Bill Bradley offered a helping hand. As I stood, I realized that my head was only chest high to his Lincoln-like proportions, and with that insight a youthful vision of being a basketball player was junked in the yard of broken dreams. At an awkward time, I was touched by a paragon that day and became water bearer for the future standard bearer of our nation. Although water-boy might be considered a lowly position in most sports, I was convinced that it was the most important job on the team. A person who carried water was the bearer of life. It's true that in the distribution of physical attributes size and might overlooked me, but that didn't stop me from carting water for the winning Crystal City Missouri High School basketball team of 1960-61.

    How Basketball Makes a Candidate
Politics is like sports, and Bill Bradley still plays old-school style Elana Schor
Sadly, times have changed and Bradley needs to get with the program. The Lakers are still contending with the title, but Wilt Chamberlain is dead. Reagan's legacy is still getting cited on the campaign trail, but now it's three generations removed. And right now Bill's getting trash-talked out of the race by Al Gore, a weekend warrior who likes to JOG, for Heaven's sake. Maybe the good word of Air Jordan will help Bradley's cause, but his ultimate weakness lies in his admirable reluctance to familiarize himself with concepts like spin control and attention-getting. Sports is more than just a metaphor for this presidential contest, it defines the race. If jogging defines Gore, a wishy-washy Clinton heir who wants nothing more than to continue his boss' safe, pandering policies, then Bush is typified by his fondness for hunting, the pseudo-sport of white men knocking off defenseless animals the way W. longs to stuff minority groups with plastic and hang them on his wall. McCain is a veteran, the kind of guy who doesn't need to play a pansy game because he's been to the big show. This leaves Bradley, who has former Bulls coach Phil Jackson all but wearing a sandwich board on national TV on his behalf and Michael Jordan doing what he never does - taking a political stand, that is. Yet the Democratic challenger's campaign has failed to capitalize. Dollar Bill might want to directly mimic His Airness and make a movie with Bugs Bunny as his fictional cartoon running mate. No, that wouldn't work. Release his own men's fragrance line, perhaps?

by Harvey Frommer The urbane and sophisticated Bill Bradley, whose name and image dominated headlines as he pursued the Democratic Presidential nomination is, in many ways, the same person he was when he starred for the New York Knickerbockers of the NBA. But in one way he is definitely different. Back then he was known as "Dollar Bill." It was a nickname he definitely deserved. While other National Basketball Association stars drove flashy cars and sported even more flashy clothes, Bradley lived simply and dressed even simpler. His apartment, a friend once said, "looked like a Holiday Inn room before the maid showed up." Bradley reportedly used paper clips when his cuff buttons gave out. His contract with the New York Knickerbockers called for $500,000 for four years, a great deal of money for that time period. But the nickname Bill Bradley received was not for the money he earned, some said, but for the money he saved. Many players believe he saved the first buck he ever made. There was a precedent for this behavior. While a Rhodes Scholar for two years at Oxford University, Bradley lived out of what was called "a large and appallingly messy suitcase." But he had more important things on his mind than style and consumer comforts.

Bill Bradley: Concerned Former Basketball Hero By our foreign editor Saskia van Reenen, 31 January 2000
The battle in the Democratic camp is between former Senator Bill Bradley and Vice-President Al Gore. Bradley is the progressive thinker with a sporting past. His programme is too radical for most Americans. But it's his ailing health that may be his biggest problem in the fight against Gore. Bill Bradley lacks charisma. He is seen as a dull intellectual, just like his Democratic opponent Al Gore. This image is further strengthened by his long pauses during debates. "Bill Bradley is a thinker", say his supporters. He has his eyes on social injustice, and is concerned for his fellow men. It's a pity that his message doesn't come across because of poor presentation. America's sporting hero
Bradley lived an impetuous youth. As the son of a Republican banker, he studied politics and philosophy at Oxford University in England. After his studies, he received a contract as a professional basketball player with the New York Knicks. He won an Olympic gold medal with the national basketball team in 1964. The same year, he swapped sport for a political career. For eighteen years he represented the state of New Jersey in the Senate. Tolerance
His great political example is Robert Kennedy and particularly his dedication to equal human rights. Bradley fights for the rights of Indians, and wants some of the land that was taken from them to be returned. He is also concerned about the lot of minority groups, and is calling for mutual tolerance. In his speeches, Bradley comes across as a teacher who patiently explains to his pupils how to make life better for the different social groups. "American can be the world's greatest multiracial society", is one of Bradley's slogans.
