The town played a major role in yesterday's event 5,000 local women baked cookies, for example and Bradley began his speech with fond memories of Crystal City, and how it had shaped him. The man From Crystal City BILL BRADLEY, Democratic Presidential Candidate: Crystal City had one stoplight then, but it had a rich array of ethnic families. When it came to race, the town was a little ahead of its time. The Little League was integrated before the schools. As a teenager, I can remember walking out of restaurants in the boot heel of Missouri because they wouldn't serve our black catcher. Racism disturbed me then, and still angers me now. For me, the only thing deserving of hate is hate itself. (Applause)

William Warren Bradley
By: Beverly William (Bill) Warren Bradley was born on July 28, 1943 in Crystal City, Missouri. His father Warren Bradley, a prominent local Republican and one of the town's wealthiest men, was the president of the Crystal City State Bank. His mother, Susan (Crowe) Bradley, was a former junior high school teacher. His mother and father insisted that he had good manners and hoped that he would be successful in what ever he did. Early in his life, Bill took lessons in dancing, tennis, golf, trumpet, French horn, piano, swimming, canoeing, typing, French, and horseback riding. His parents instilled a sense of service to others on him also, and the importance of scholastic achievement. Bill Bradley first began playing basketball at the Crystal City YMCA when he was nine, and soon discovered that he had a talent for the sport. He entered Crystal City High School in 1959. By the time of his graduation in 1961 he had scored 3,006 points, becoming recognized as the best player in the history of Missouri High School Basketball and he was twice named to Scholastic magazine's All-America team. A straight A+ stundent, he was elected president of the Missouri Association of Stundent Councils and was a member of the National Honor Society. Over 75 universities offered Bradley atheletic scholarships. Bill had accepted one from Duke University, but decided during a summer togo to Europe instead to Princeton, because it had not offered in financial assistance. Education was most important to him. Bradley went to Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and Unternational Affairs with the idea of perparing for a career in the foreign service. He eventually decided on a major in history.

    Bill Bradley on Civil Rights
Quest for racial unity is a defining moral issue
The quest for racial unity remains the defining moral issue of our time. It’s one of the reasons I first ran for public office. The work I did helping expand Medicaid for women and children who are poor, to raise the Earned Income Tax Credit, to reduce infant mortality, to assure child support enforcement, to protect federal aid to school districts that serve the poor, and to support every piece of civil rights legislation that came through the Senate all flowed from my convictions about racial unity. Source: The Journey From Here, by Bill Bradley, p. 49 Aug 15, 2000
Whites should recognize “white skin privilege”
White indifference comes in many forms. It can be indifference to the suffering of others, or what Martin Luther King, Jr. called “the silence of good people.” It can be indifference to the need for racial healing. It can also be the inability of whites to understand for no reason other than the color of their skin. White skin privilege is the flip side of discrimination. While discrimination is negative overt, white skin privilege is negative and passive. It’s not something whites intentionally do. Rather it’s a great blind spot that most whites are unaware of.

Wednesday, 8 March, 2000, 11:23 GMT Bill Bradley: From basketball to politics
He's the "normal guy" from small town America in the slightly crumpled suit. He's the man who says that he has spent the last few years seeking to connect with ordinary people. But most of all, former Senator Bill Bradley is the basketball superstar who sought to slam-dunk his way into the White House before he withdrew from the campaign for the Democratic candidacy in March. Born in Crystal City, Missouri, the definition of blue collar small-town America, Bill Bradley shone both as an athlete and a student. Even his personal life differs from the normal trend of presidential hopefuls - his wife, Ernestine Schlant, is a professor of German and Comparative literature. Basketball Hall of Fame
He found himself torn between politics and basketball. He chose basketball.
Bill Bradley first caught the public's imagination as a member of the US's gold medal-winning team at the 1964 Olympics and a subsequent profile in the New Yorker magazine described the 21-year-old as so talented that he would probably one day be President. A son of a banker and a former school teacher, the young Bill went on to Princeton University before winning a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford - but found himself torn between politics and basketball. He chose basketball.

Posted: Thursday June 30, 2005 12:42PM; Updated: Thursday June 30, 2005 1:10PM Shawn Bradley did not have much to get pumped up abour during his career, but that wasn't entirely his fault. Layne Murdoch/Getty Images So it's almost over for Shawn Bradley . After 12 NBA seasons, Bradley and the Dallas Mavericks are negotiating a buyout of the remaining three years of his contract. You may have missed the news; it came during the lead-up to Game 7 of the NBA finals. Judging by the timing, the 7-foot-6 Bradley may have wanted to slink away unnoticed. I have always rooted for Bradley. He was taken second overall in the 1993 draft by my hometown team, the 76ers. I was among many with high expectations. The NBA had seen centers as big as Bradley before Mark Eaton Manute Bol Chuck Nevitt but Bradley was touted as the first supersize center with basketball skills. Back in the day, some thought Bradley would dominate so effortlessly it wouldn't be fair to the other teams. People wondered: "How can we lose with this guy?"

There was widespread disbelief until Bradley's senior year at Princeton, when he hung 41 points on top-ranked Michigan and Cazzie Russell in the 1964 Holiday Festival tournament at Madison Square Garden he received a three-minute standing ovation after fouling out and then one-man-teamed the Tigers into the '65 Final Four. Princeton didn't reach the championship game, but all Bradley did in the consolation match was score 58 points against Wichita State. Former basketball star and current Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley hasn't fouled an opponent on the basketball court in years, but lately he's fouling the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Bradley claims the congressional vote on the Act led to which political party he would join. Oh, really? On October 9, 1999 at an Iowa Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner, Bradley exclaimed: "I remember the exact moment that I became a Democrat. It was Democrats that stepped forward that evening in the Senate and cast their vote that washed away the stain of segregation in this country."
