Bradley, Bill Bradley, Bill , full name William Warren Bradley (1943- ), American political leader and professional basketball player, United States senator from New Jersey (1979-1997). Born in Crystal City, Missouri, Bradley was educated at Princeton University, where he was an All-American basketball player. He was a member of the victorious 1964 U.S. Olympic basketball team and was named college player of the year in 1965. Graduating with honors in 1965, he turned down a lucrative contract offer from the New York Knickerbockers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) to accept a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University in England. He joined the Knicks as a forward in 1967 and retired from basketball ten years later, after a career that included two NBA championships. His book Life on the Run (1976) was hailed for its honesty and insight into the world of professional athletes. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983. Bradley entered politics in 1978, winning his first electoral race and becoming the youngest member of the U.S. Senate. Hardworking and conscientious, he was reelected in 1984 and 1990 and developed into a leading liberal Democratic spokesman. In 1991 he opposed the use of force to end the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait. In July 1992 Bradley was a keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention in New York City. He declined to seek reelection to the Senate in 1996, declaring that politics in the United States were “broken.” In 2000 he challenged Vice President Al Gore for the Democratic nomination for president. In March 2000 he withdrew from the race after failing to win any of the early state primaries.

Bill Bradley was born July 28, 1943 in Crystal City, Missouri, a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River, 36 miles south of St. Louis. The only child of Warren and Susan Bradley, Bill enjoyed a middle-class family upbringing in an ethnically and racially diverse town with a strong blue-collar base. The son of a well-respected, small-town banker and a former schoolteacher, Bill was often teased for his family’s success and sought to fit in as "one of the guys" by playing basketball. For Bill, "basketball was the great common denominator. It didn’t make any difference who you were." Through hard work, practice and perseverance, Bill succeeded in basketball; scoring 3,000 points in four years of high school and winning All-American honors his junior and senior years. Although basketball was Bill’s passion, he was a very well-rounded individual. He was also an Eagle Scout, the high school student body president, and a member of the baseball and track teams. Recruited heavily out of high school, Bill initially chose to attend Duke University in North Carolina, but changed his mind after completing an educational tour of Europe in the summer prior to his freshman year. The trip, which sparked his interest in international affairs as well as the prospect of studying at Oxford University, caused him to reconsider his college choice and attend Princeton, instead of Duke. Although Princeton did not give out athletic scholarships, they had an impressive record of producing Rhodes Scholars.

Outsider vs. insider: Gore's toughest challenger
    by Beth Rowen
Bill Bradley has proposed strict hand-gun regulations as well as campaign-finance reforms and improved race relations. This article was posted on August 27, 1999.
Former New Jersey senator Bill Bradley has fought tough battles on the basketball court and in public office. But his most rigorous contest lies ahead. Indeed, he faces an uphill battle in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, with formidable competition from Vice President Al Gore.
    Tighter Gun Control, Campaign-Financing
Fundraising and gun control set the two candidates apart, however most of their views vary only subtly. While both promise to be tough on guns, Bradley's proposals go beyond Gore's.
In addition to a three-day waiting period before an individual can buy a firearm and licenses for gun owners (which Gore also favors), the former senator has proposed mandatory handgun registration and removing gun dealers from residential neighborhoods. Gore has proposed a constitutionally questionable ban on "gang-related" clothing. "Traveling with my teammates on the road in America was one of the most enlightening experiences of my life."

Before he became a political name, Bradley had game By Jeff D'Alessio The Sporting News Former presidential candidate Bill Bradley was a pretty good player before he went into politics. The pride of Princeton still holds the Final Four record for most points in a game, scoring 58 in a third-place win over Wichita State in 1965. These days, Bradley works as managing director for a New York City investment bank. TSN: What's the best change they've made with the NCAA Tournament since you played in it? BB: I think the best thing is the amount of attention players get today. I've never been able to get the film of that 58-point game. I've always wanted to show my daughter I could hit hook shots from the corner. I remember being at the Final Four. The night before the Michigan game, we flew out from New Jersey. We checked into a motel I think it was a Howard Johnson and my roommate and I checked into the room and there were no beds. All we had were pull-out sofas. That's what they had us sleeping on. We thought, "Here we are in the finals, and they can't even give us a reasonable bed." TSN: Did anyone give you guys a chance to get to the Final Four your senior year, or was it as improbable as it would be today?
