Opening Day of UT Athletic Orientation "It's a great, special day. I can remember when I was your age and I came to campus for the first time. I was very excited, as I am sure you are. You are attending a fine institution; we have great academics, fine athletics, and we're in a great city in a great state. This is a special, special place. I'm honored to work side-by-side with our Women's Athletics Director, Chris Plonsky, the most powerful woman in college athletics. We work together to make Texas the best athletics department in the country. You're starting the best four to five years of your life. It's up to you to make this a great experience. We'll do a lot to help you, but it's up to you. My advice, when you see anybody in the hallway here in Bellmont who is a staff member, introduce yourself and get to be known. You represent a lot of people when you come to Texas. You represent your high school. You represent your team. You represent your family. And most importantly, you represent yourself." SPRINGDALE Northwest Arkansas is more than Fayetteville superstar Ronnie Brewer.
Brewer, a junior 6-6 forward, headlines the 2002 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Northwest Arkansas boys basketball team, but there is a nice assortment of talent on the 10-man roster.
"Northwest Arkansas basketball has been really good," Green Forest Coach Jeff Morrow said. "The rest of the state doesn't hear about Northwest Arkansas unless it's Ronnie Brewer getting 30 points."
West Fork Coach David Ferrell runs the AAO Top 25 Camp in the summer and said every player on the All-Northwest team has been in his camps. He said Northwest Arkansas is not a super region for boys basketball on an individual level, but that is changing.
"If you track the last seven, eight years, our area is getting better," Ferrell said. "This area is more known for team basketball, but the individuals are getting better. I think basketball is getting better."
Fayetteville Coach Barry Gebhart said he thinks high school basketball in Northwest Arkansas is only going to improve.

LAST WEEK: In a dual track meet against McGuffey, McReynolds won the 100-meter dash in 12.2 seconds, the second-best time in the WPIAL this season and the top time in Class AAA. AMONG THE BEST: McReynolds also runs the 200, and her time of 25.8 earlier this season is the second best in the WPIAL. McReynolds has some experience in national competition, too. At last summer's Junior Olympics national championship, she finished 20th in the country in the 100 for the 13-14-year-old age group. "I like the 100 better because it's easier," McReynolds said. Editor's note: Each year, the University Interscholastic League's state executive committee hears eligibility appeals for a dozen or more high school athletes. The Dallas Morning News monitored hearings for the 2004-05 school year to provide an inside look at the process. No case had a more direct impact on a state championship than the one involving Kountze basketball player Ashton Hall. One of the few things Kountze senior Ashton Hall doesn't do well during a basketball game is smile. High Schools UIL eligibility hearings Center took on UIL over where to play No room for friendship at hearings Other 2004-05 cases of note More high schools Hall remained expressionless even amid the frenzy after he turned an alley-oop pass off the backboard into a dunk during the Class 2A boys final in March. He finally gave in to emotion in the final seconds when Kountze's lead over Tuscola Jim Ned was insurmountable. He grabbed senior teammate Phillip Coffey by the jersey as if demonstrating a flagrant foul, and they screamed and hugged as the final horn sounded at the University of Texas' Erwin Center.
