It is that consistency stressed in the players' daily activities on and off the basketball floor that has translated into the team's current run of national prominence gained under head coach Rick Stansbury. Entering his seventh season at the Mississippi State helm and 15th year overall in Starkville, Stansbury ranks third all-time with an MSU career coaching mark of 126-64 (.663) after guiding last year's 26-4 State squad to its first outright SEC title since 1962-63 with a school-best 14-2 league mark. For directing the 2003-04 Bulldog club to a third straight NCAA Tournament berth, which included an undefeated season (8-0) in SEC road action, a No. 4 regular-season national AP ranking and a school-record No. 2 seeding in NCAA tourney play, Stansbury was named the SEC's Coach of the Year by The Associated Press. He also collected district coaching honors from both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) for his team's efforts. Two years ago, Stansbury piloted the 21-10 Bulldogs to an NCAA Tournament appearance after advancing to the championship game of the SEC Tournament for a second consecutive year. The 2001-02 MSU contingent captured the school's second SEC Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on the way to establishing a new single-season school standard with 27 victories. | |
