Darius Miles and the New Breed: No Good for College Basketball
Darius Miles is settling into his new digs quite nicely, thank you very much. The 19-year old has worked his way into the Los Angeles Clippers’ starting lineup — no, there’s no punchline here — and is contributing 10 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in the opening weeks of his rookie season. Along with Kevin Garnett, he was recently featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s NBA Preview, heading the latest class of youngsters into the pros. Mike Jarvis, on the other hand, may still be rubbing his eyes. A few months before the Clips made Miles the third pick in last June’s NBA draft, the St. John’s head coach thought he had landed the nation’s top prep player. The 6-foot-9 Miles, along with point guard Omar Cook, would have teamed to give the Johnnies the nation’s top recruiting class. No such luck. Miles bolted for the bigs and headlines the latest version of college basketball’s unsolvable problem: how to keep talented kids, if it gets them at all. Ever since Garnett leapt straight from high school into the 1995 NBA draft, the question became inevitable: Why should top high-schoolers risk injury in college when they can get guaranteed money in the pros? Every year, the debate is renewed, and to this point no real progress has been made. This season, Duke’s Shane Battier will head a committee to argue for modest salaries for college players. Still, does he really have a chance?

ESPN.com SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Eddie Griffin has the backpack on his shoulders. Double straps. He's got a sweatshirt hanging loosely on him. He's wearing jeans and his sneaks to get him back to the dorm. The hair on his head is closely cropped, and the facial hair is still thin enough to question whether or not it could grow other than above his lip and below his chin. Oh, and, on Seton Hall's practice court, he's not physically strong enough yet to avoid getting his shot blocked or, at least altered, by 6-11 sophomore center Samuel Dalembert. Eddie Griffin chose Seton Hall over the NBA, admitting he could use at least a year of college ball before getting paid to play.

Jon Bender Interview
By InsideHoops.com The Indiana Pacers are loaded with talent from top to bottom. Because of this fact, forward Jon Bender has not gotten consistent playing time in the past, and this season he's just recently come back from injury. InsideHoops.com met with Bender for an exclusive interview. InsideHoops.com : Talk about getting healthy. You're back.
Jon Bender : It's good to be back on the floor. The biggest thing is just getting back and adjusted. As far as all the plays and stuff, I'm cool on the court. As far as out there playing, it doesn't take long for me to get out there and get comfortable. Every game is starting to bring another part of my game out, as far as putting it on the floor and shooting, just getting comfortable out there. It's good to be back.

  • Who I am: I'm a 35 year old computer programmer living in the Dallas area (Allen to be exact). I was born in San Jose, California and moved to the Dallas area (Richardson) when I was 7. I went away to college in Massachusetts and graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1992 where I majored in Computer Science (great school, but I wouldn't want to spend my life in New England). I spent 1 year post-school in Mass before moving to Austin for 2 years (where I put a ton of miles on my car driving to Dallas almost every other weekend during the basketball season). I've been back in Dallas since May, 1995. BTW, the 'net is not a new thing for me. I've been online since 1989. I started doing the NBA daily news reports in the summer of 1993 and my Mavs reports during the fall of 1993 and created my basketball web sites in the fall of 1995.

  • 2001 Hawaii trip report - I tend to do trips in a big way. I don't sit around on my vacations. This is my trip report for my 2001 summer trip to Hawaii. [If you are interested in hearing about more of my trips (I only did write ups for these 3 trips), take a look at my hiking page where I've described all the hikes I went on during my trips.]

2004-2005 NBA Salaries Based on the rosters for 12/20/04 Compiled by me (Patricia Bender) from my own information and sources. With many thanks to those sources! Players with 5 or more years of experience and signed to minimum, one year contracts only count $745,046 against a team's cap (the league pays any amount over that amount) [or the prorated amount from when the player was signed or released]. I've listed the player's actual salary in the listing and for the overall average, but used the $745,046 amount for the player's team payroll. Released players signed to non-guaranteed contracts and minimum players signed during the season are pro-rated for the number of games they were with the team or the number of games left in the season from when they signed. The team's payroll is totaled from the individual salaries I have listed. The actual team payroll maybe different from what I have listed as there maybe other small salaries that I didn't include (ie, some cap-fodder players from training camp ended up counting a small amount), there might be some bonuses and trade kickers that count that I don't know about, and/or some salaries might not be accurate - but the amount is probably close the real amount. The league salary cap for 2004-05 is $43,870,000. The league has a soft cap - which means teams can go over the cap to re-sign their own free agents. Team Payrolls Team Payroll 1. New York Knicks $102,442,544 2. Dallas Mavericks $91,553,496 3. Portland Trailblazers $83,671,312 4. Philadelphia 76ers $71,951,888 5. Minnesota Timberwolves $70,060,920 6. Well the wheels have certainly fallen off. The Los Angeles Lakers have
been terrible since the February 24th trade deadline. Boasting a record of 4-13
since the team decided not to make a move mid-season, it certainly feels like the
Lakers are tanking.
Although painful to watch, every loss gives the team the potential for a
higher draft pick.
After so many years of success, the Lakers are without a doubt lottery bound.
The question is not will they catch the Denver Nuggets. The question is, will the Lakers win another game this season? With Lamar Odom hurt, a weak defensive team got even weaker. The reality is that the team is trying to win each and every game, but they just don't have the personnel, chemistry and defensive prowess to get things done. An inside source says that the rumor sending a number of Lakers to the Utah Jazz for Carlos Boozer has damaged the team's fragile psyche. Whether the rumor was true or false has no bearing, the impact still remains. The fact

Men's Basketball Coach Bob Bender Turned a Floundering UW Program With Six Consecutive Losing Seasons into an NCAA Contender.
by Jon Marmor Never in a million years did Bob Bender have any intention of making a living as a coach. He was the son of a coach. When he played basketball, he was a point guard, and was considered a "coach on the floor." Been there, done that. So when he hung up his basketball shoes for good in 1980, after a distinguished playing career, he looked for something else to do with his lifeeven though his genes were calling out to him and people kept telling him he would be a natural behind the bench. "I didn't want to do that," he says today. "I had to get away from it." Which sounds a little hard to believe, since he is saying this from his spacious, second-floor office in the Graves Building with the great view of Lake Washington. The sign on the door says: Bob Bender, Head Men's Basketball Coach. For the past 16 yearsincluding the past five at the University of Washington Bender has made a very nice living, not to mention quite a name for himself, as a college basketball coach. He could run from his genes, but he sure couldn't hide. Now he can't hide from anyone. Though he may occasionally go unrecognized around Seattle, the college basketball world has its radar locked onto Bender. That's only natural for someone who turned a floundering UW program with six consecutive losing seasons, into one that made the NCAA "Sweet 16" in March. During the NCAA tournament, there was just as much talk about which big-time programs would try to hire him away as there was about the upstart Husky team that unexpectedly won two tournament games and came within a rebound of upsetting No. 8 Connecticut and moving into the "Elite Eight."

Bender has frequently been the people's choice. One of the nation's top high school basketball players as a senior, he was recruited by every big-time program. He played both at Indiana and Duke, and was the first player ever to reach the Final Four as a member of two different teams. He was drafted by the NBA's San Diego Clippers and was told that even though he wouldn't make the team that year, he would have a chance later on. When he interviewed for coaching jobs, he usually was a top finalist. Which is downright interesting because he wanted no part of coaching when he hung up his uniform in 1980 after a few weeks of an NBA camp and touring with an AAU team. Coaching and the game had been his whole life growing up. "I could never get away from it," he recalled. His dad, a former Marine, was a high school coach for 18 years in Bloomington, Ill., where Bender grew up. (Bender, who has two younger sisters, was born in Quantico, Va., while his father was on assignment there. His dad calls his children "dollar babies" since military families only paid a dollar for deliveries.) Bender played for his father for three yearsthe only reason it wasn't four, is that his dad stepped aside during Bob's senior year to help him with the crush of recruiting. "We were always around the game," Bender goes on. "As a family, we were either going to my games, or my sisters' games. And my dad always brought the game home. When I played in high school, I played for him. I couldn't get away from the game, and I had enough."

Seventh Season of Bender Ball Begins at Washington Husky men's basketball team seeks third straight NCAA Tournament berth Oct. 20, 1999 "There is no question that people will judge how we respond this season to the loss of Todd MacCulloch and Donald Watts. People will observe to judge the longevity of our building success and what level we can maintain. For us that should be great motivation to prove that over the past two years, being in the NCAA Tournament was not an isolated incident but something that can become consistent." Washington Coach Bob Bender Don't call it rebuilding. The only rebuilding occurring at Washington is taking place to the inside structure of Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The task at hand for the Huskies is replacing a pair of 1,000-point scorers, 7-foot center Todd MacCulloch and Donald Watts who both graduated. However, there is enough talent remaining to challenge for a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. Only once in school history have the Huskies appeared in three straight NCAA Tournaments (1984-86). Washington lost 59-58 to Miami (Ohio) in the first round of last season's NCAA Tournament, ending a 17-12 season. The Huskies finished fourth in the 1999 Pacific-10 Conference standings with a 10-8 league ledger.
