Standing 6'1" and formerly a starting guard for his Sacramento, Calif., high school, Kuska spent evenings and weekends researching his topic, mostly at the Library of Congress. His book, Hot Potato: How Washington and New York Gave Birth to Black Basketball and Changed America's Game Forever , was published this spring by the University of Virginia Press. The book idea was an outgrowth of some freelance reporting that Kuska had embarked upon more than 10 years ago. "I wanted to keep my journalistic skills honed, so I freelanced a couple stories, including a story for the Washington City Paper ," he said. Kuska had been a comparative literature major at Brigham Young University, then got a graduate degree in journalism at Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He was working as an environmental reporter for Medill News Service in Washington, D.C., when word came of a job opening at NIH in 1987. Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Elgin Baylor Biography Elgin Baylor (b. December 16, 1934) was one of the most graceful and acrobatic forwards to ever play the game of basketball playing 15 seasons for the NBA's Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers.
Elgin Baylor played college basketball at Seattle University, leading the Chieftains to the NCAA Championship game in 1958 (where they lost to the Kentucky Wildcats. Following his junior season, Baylor joined the Minneapolis Lakers for the 1958-1959 season and moving with them to Los Angeles in 1960.
In 1959, Baylor was named the NBA Rookie of the Year and from the 1960-61 to the 1962-63 seasons, he averaged 34.8, 38.3 and 34.0 points per game, leading the Lakers to the NBA Finals eight times (although never winning). Baylor was a 10-time All-NBA First Team selection and went to the NBA All-Star Game 11 times.
Baylor began to be hampered with knee problems during the 1963-64 season and, while still a very powerful force, was never quite the same player, never averaging above 30 points per game again. During Baylor's career, the Lakers were a consistently powerful team, but were continuously overshadowed by the Boston Celtics dynasty of the time.
Baylor finally retired during the 1971-72 season because of his nagging knee problems and, ironically, the Lakers went on to win the NBA Championship that season, something that Baylor never achieved. He finished his career with an astonishing 23,149 points, 3,650 assists and 11,463 rebounds over 846 games.

I wasn't prepared to agree with Bob Batchelor. When he e-mail me and told me about his book, which postulates that basketball has now replaced baseball as America's game, I was more than happy to review it, but I was very skeptical of his hypothesis. I still tear up every time I watch "Field of Dreams." That speech James Earl Jones gives at the end about how baseball has been the lone constant in an America that has been wiped clean and rebuilt time and time again - that movie always leaves me feeling that baseball is truly America's game. And then I read this book . . .
Basketball in America begins with Michael Jordan. Sensible enough, given that Jordan is one of the most recognizable faces on the planet. It's not just a tribute to the man, though, it's an in-depth look at how he changed basketball forever. When Jordan's Bulls defeated Magic's Lakers in the 1991 NBA Finals we witnessed, unknowingly, what Batchelor calls a "defining moment." Jordan was a player of destiny, and he seemed to have to power to stop destiny or change destiny as he saw fit. He became an icon, a true hero in a world starved for heroes. The beginning of his reign as the best athlete on the planet put the NBA on the global front page for the first time and made Nike a household name. What many people don't know is that when Nike wrote Jordan that first check for $250,000 for five years they were putting the entire future of the company in his hands. If Jordan hadn't become Michael Jordan Nike would be no more.
