Career
Barkley played college basketball for Auburn University , where he excelled as a player. He mainly played center at Auburn, despite being far shorter than normal for the position; he stands slightly under 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m). In , he began in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers . Early in his career, Barkley had a weight problem, sometimes weighing over 300 pounds (136 kg) at Auburn. His nickname of "The Round Mound of Rebound" dates back to his Auburn days. He battled those problems, however, and was able to fill the spot left by Julius Erving on the team. With Barkley, the team reached the playoffs every year except for

Feb. 20, 1963- Basketball player. Among the preeminent talents in the National Basketball Association is the outspoken forward of the Philadelphia 76ers, Charles Barkley, whose quick and aggressive play around the basket has placed him among the league's leading rebounders and scorers since the 1986-87 season. At six feet five inches tall, Barkley is the shortest player ever to lead the NBA in rebounding. The 250 pounds packed onto his relatively stubby frame helps Barkley to overpower taller players; never has a player so heavy been able to leap as high or dribble as skillfully. "Charles Barkley is unique with his body frame, with his structure, with his jumping ability," Pat Riley, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and currently the head coach of the New York Knicks, explained to Jan Hubbard of New York News day (February 25, 1990). "The whole thing is unique, and that's why he is truly great." An extraordinarily intense competitor, Barkley plays every game as though it were his last. "A game for Charles is a passionate experience," Matt Guokas, Barkley's former head coach with the 76ers, told Mark Ribowsky for Inside Sports (June 1986). "I've never seen anyone so ferocious in wanting to prove he's better than his opponent." But Barkley's highly emotional nature and his frequently blunt comments to reporters have often made him the center of controversy.

Jun 1992 Acquitted of assault charge resulting from his December arrest. 7 Jul 1996 Jeb Tyler files an assault complaint against Barkley over an altercation in The Basement , a Cleveland dance bar. Tyler: "He said it like three times, 'You got to leave.' I said, 'No, I'm not leaving the bar.' Then I said, 'How about you leave the bar?' As soon as I said that, he punched me in the nose." 2 Aug 1997 Jury rejects Jeb Tyler's claim of $550,000 against Barkley, over the July 1996 bar fight. 26 Oct 1997 Basketball great Charles Barkley is charged with aggravated battery and resisting arrest after throwing 20-year-old man Jorge Lugo through a plate glass window in an Orlando, Florida dance club. • Charles Barkley The most fascinating sports figure since Muhammad Ali, he gave rise to a generation of hip-hop athletes. By Larry Platt It was a humbler, portlier, more emotional Charles Barkley who said goodbye to the sport of basketball April 19, the last day of the NBA regular season and the final night of his roundball career, which had spanned 16 riveting, often maddening, always dramatic years. Barkley had blown out a knee in December, playing for the Houston Rockets in Philadelphia, where his pro career began in 1984. The injury cut short his farewell tour; that night, the onetime bad boy of professional sports sobbed alone in his hotel room, so haunted was he by this final image of himself being carried off the court. Still, his depression didn't keep him from quipping wiseass, as usual: "Now I'm just what America needs another unemployed black man," he joked.

CHARLES BARKLEY Basketball Player Outspoken and outrageous, Charles Barkley was one of the National Basketball Association's most colorful characters during his 16-year career. A 6' 6" forward, Barkley entered the NBA in 1984, signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. From 1992 to 1996 he played with the Phoenix Suns, and then was a member of the Houston Rockets until his mid-season retirement in December of 1999. Nicknamed "Sir Charles," he was throughout his career a frequent interview subject whose antics on and off the court keep him in the news. He was also an outstanding player: he was named an NBA All-Star 11 times, won 2 Olympic Gold Medals (1992 and 1996), and collected more than 20,000 points and 10,000 rebounds in his career. In 2000 he signed a deal with Turner Sports and became a regular studio analyst on the TNT cable program Inside the NBA

Charles Barkley: Value of kids' futures a slam-dunk
By Jay MacDonald They call him Sir Charles. In the Xs and Os of the National Basketball Association, Charles Barkley reigns over the Os: outspoken, outlandish, outstanding. In a league dominated by giants, the 6-foot, 4-inch Leeds, Ala.-native managed to outrebound, outscore, outhustle, outsmart and outtrash-talk players twice his size and half his age. Only three other players in NBA history Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain and Karl Malone managed to compile 20,000 career points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists. His accomplishment seems all the more amazing considering his competition included the likes of Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. - advertisement - Barkley was a hardworking junior out of Auburn University when the Philadelphia 76ers made him the fifth pick in the 1984 draft. Nicknamed "The Round Mound of Rebound," Barkley's rebound-oriented game soon expanded under the tutelage of two superstar teammates, Julius "Dr. J" Erving and Moses Malone. The veteran stars quickly set their young charge straight about basketball, money and life. His irreverent sense of humor and love for the game made Barkley a media and fan favorite through his 16 seasons. Although he never won the coveted championship, he became one of the most popular perennial All Stars. He was named league MVP in 1993 and one of the 50 greatest NBA players in 1996.

Charles Barkley: Value of kids' futures a slam-dunk Page 2
By Jay MacDonald Bankrate: That's not idle speculation. You didn't grow up in luxury. Barkley: I grew up poor. Bankrate: Do you remember when you first became aware of money? Barkley: I probably didn't have money until I got to the NBA. Bankrate: Were you prepared to handle it?
    - advertisement - Barkley: The first mistake I made was, I bought like seven cars. The best thing that happened to me was Dr. J slapped me upside the head and said, 'Listen, don't be stupid. You don't need seven cars. Put that money in the bank and let it grow and grow and invest in real good, positive things.' It was the best thing that ever happened to me. That's what I tell all these young guys, man, you don't need all that damn jewelry; you don't need all those cars. Invest your money wisely, and hopefully invest it back in the community in some capacity. Because you're not going to play basketball forever. Bankrate: Is it difficult for you as a successful black athlete to try to talk some sense into young people who only want to follow in your footsteps?
