Forward again found to be in noncompliance
By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 1/24/2004 The Celtics yesterday suspended Vin Baker indefinitely for noncompliance with his treatment program, likely moving the team one step closer to the termination of the power forward's contract. ADVERTISEMENT A league doctor jointly selected by Baker and the Celtics notified the team of another incident of noncompliance yesterday. The current suspension resulted from a positive test for alcohol. On Jan. 6, Baker was fined and suspended for three games for his failure of multiple alcohol tests. In accordance with an agreement reached by Baker and the Celtics last summer, the third incident of noncompliance results in an automatic suspension for an indefinite period, effective immediately. If the suspension reaches the 10-game mark, which would happen when Boston plays at Chicago Feb. 12 right before the All-Star break, Celtics officials can move to terminate the remainder of Baker's contract, worth approximately $35 million over 2 1/2 years. Coach Jim O'Brien said he would proceed as if Baker will not return for the remainder of the season. "I'm very disappointed that things have not worked out for Vin," said O'Brien. "It's just a tragic turn of events. It's just a difficult disease to deal with and right now it would appear that he's not winning that battle."

Baker back in mix after suspension
By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 1/12/2004 HOUSTON The three-game suspension imposed on Vin Baker officially ended last night. But Baker won't take the court until shootaround tomorrow in preparation for the Bucks game that night. ADVERTISEMENT Director of basketball operations Danny Ainge notified coach Jim O'Brien yesterday that Baker would meet the team in Milwaukee. Shootaround at the Bradley Center probably also will be the first time O'Brien talks with Baker since the suspension. In all likelihood, Baker will not play tomorrow night. Since his suspension, Baker also has missed two practices and three shootarounds. "I guess the first chance I'll get to see him on the court will be at shootaround in Milwaukee," said O'Brien. "I really don't have any plan to utilize him in Milwaukee. We've been practicing and playing and we'll just have to let him get back into the scheme of things. "I don't have any choice [but to play it by ear]. It's pretty much wait and see, see how Vin is performing in practice and the time that he gets in games. If he earns a lot of playing time, he's going to get it." Needless to say, Baker will have to show vast overall improvement before he earns significant minutes. As Baker suffered through a relapse of alcoholism, his playing time and productivity decreased dramatically. "It wasn't just defense," said O'Brien. "You've got to post. You've got to score. You've got to make shots. You've got to run the court. You've got to play basketball."

Bowen agrees with Baker. The first three acts are important, but they mean nothing without the big ending.

Vin Baker Interview
Exclusive interview by InsideHoops.com The Vin Baker of today is thin and extremely fit. He's barely recognizable from the last few years. Baker hopes to be a key contributor to this season's Boston Celtics this season. InsideHoops.com editor Jeff Lenchiner met with Vin and talked about his successful physical transformation.
InsideHoops.com: How'd you get into this kind of great shape? You're ripped.
Vin Baker: Yeah, a lot of work over the summer. My trainer, we really got in the gym and spent about four hours a day, four or five hours a day. It was a matter of training, lifting weights and changing up my diet. A lot of it was nutrition, getting rid of a lot of junk, and my body reacted well.
InsideHoops.com: So the changing of the diet, is it towards things like vegetables, chicken and fish?
Vin Baker: Yeah, a lot of it was healthy food, a lot of fish, a lot of chicken and things like that, and really concentrating on not doing it not just for two weeks but really concentrating for the last eight months.

Basketball Great Michael Jordan Fired by Washington Wizard’s Owners Abe Pollin and Ted Leonsis
According to Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, “you hate to say it, but I think MJ got used. Now, where are the Wizards? Both parties lose in all of this. Michael gets tainted, and the Wizards lose their No. 1 draw.” During his time at the Wizards, they became the most popular road draw and made $30 million, selling out every game. Michael Jordan, while playing for the Chicago Bulls in the ‘90s, led them to six NBA championship titles.

5-8-03. Bob Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television, has asked basketball legend, Michael Jordan to join his Charlotte expansion franchise. The two friends met at a Chicago Bulls game twelve years ago. According to Johnson, who purchased the yet-to-be-named team for $300 million, “absolutely I want him to be involved. He can play any role he wants to play, frankly.” Jordan is being shopped around by his representatives to other franchises, including the Chicago Bulls, whom he played for 13 years and the Atlanta Hawks, who are for sale.

The Ornery American Sports Writer
Patience is a Virtue? Nobody Told These Guys By Chris Bellamy July 7, 2004 O! How the mighty Celtics and Knicks have fallen Like a couple of aging Hollywood movie stars, their statuses have dwindled from heartthrob headliner to casual afterthought. Sure, they're still hungry, still fighting for top billing, but in reality they're lucky just to get those common supporting roles. Only this ain't Hollywoodthis is the NBA's Atlantic Division. In case you weren't paying close attention to last year's NBA playoffs, you may have missed the ever-so-brief cameo appearances of the once-great Boston Celtics and New York Knicks, who combined for a grand total of zero victories in their best-of-seven, first-round losses. The two former league heavyweightswho totaled a 75-89 regular-season record and were perhaps the two most dreadful playoff teams of my lifetimemade quiet entrances into the playoff pool and even quieter exits. Nobody blinked an eye, nobody was surprised, and nobody outside of Boston and New York particularly cared. Where greatness was once expected, mediocrity is now the normand from the way things have gone in recent years and the way things are looking, it'll be a good long while before the Knicks and Celts are back on top again. How did it come to this? How did two of the most storied franchises in NBA historyin fact, the only two charter members of the NBA still in their original citiesslip to such mediocrity? Maybe it was bound to happenthe law of averages and all that jazz. Or maybe it's the compulsive overspending, the roster mismanagement, the rapid-fire hirings and firings, the ill-advised trades that hamstring the salary cap . . . or, in short, complete front-office ineptitude.

With the MLE, Knicks sign…Vin Baker?
Did Isiah Thomas choose Vin Baker over "Shaq Stopper" Erick Dampier? Actually no, but it appears he chose to bring in Jamal Crawford over the free agent center from Golden State. Today the NY Post picked up on a story that ESPN.com first reported last week . It appears that Isiah will use most of his available $4.9 Mid Level Exception (MLE) to sign Baker, the embattled power forward with a history of alcoholism. Gothamist loves how a certified alcoholic, especially one that has proven again and again that his addiction hurts his ability to perform on the hardwood, can lock up millions of dollars in guaranteed money in today's NBA climate. This decision by Isiah is curious, considering that Dampier has said that he would consider taking a one year offer for the Knicks MLE if he had too. However, Baker is represented by Aaron Goodwin, who also happens to rep Jamal Crawford who joined
the Knicks last week
. Most likely Isiah gave his word that if the Crawford deal, which Goodwin help facilitate, went down, he would also take care of Baker. Now the only way that Dampier is coming to New York is via a sign and trade with Golden State, something the Warriors are not in favor of, given the dearth of cap friendly contracts on the Knicks roster.

SGMA Heroes® Awards Names Vin Baker As Connecticut State Winner
NORTH PALM BEACH, FLORIDA – November 1, 2001 – The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) is proud to announce Vin Baker as its 2001 SGMA HEROES Awards winner from the state of Connecticut. Baker, who hails from Old Saybrook, was selected for his outstanding hard work and dedication to the Stand Tall Foundation. The SGMA HEROES Awards are presented annually to those special individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made an exceptional and lasting contribution to the pursuit of sports excellence, sportsmanship, participation or opportunity within their local community or beyond. Baker, an National Basketball Association player for the Seattle Supersonics, started the Stand Tall Foundation in his home state of Connecticut in order to provide opportunities for inner-city kids to advance both academically and athletically. Baker’s foundation has raised more than $250,000 to offer disadvantaged youth full and partial scholarships to the University of Hartford, his alma mater. He continually raises money for other youth charity groups in Connecticut, as well as bringing in other NBA players and friends to participate in charity events and basketball clinics for the area youth. As one of the 51 state winners (including the District of Columbia) for the SGMA HEROES Awards, Baker will receive a $100 cash prize and $400 will be donated in his name to his favorite sports charity or organization. Baker is also eligible to be selected as one of three national winners who will be honored during

Vin Baker's Long Journey Home
By Phil Weinholtz Published: Thursday, February 19, 2004 In his final home game at the University of Hartford, Vin Baker took center court at the Chase Family Arena to sing the national anthem. With friends, family and a full crowd on hand, this was the culmination of four years of hard work for Baker.
Vin Baker transformed basketball at the University of Hartford. He entered the school as a scrawny 200 pound 6'11" kid and left as Hartford's most prolific scorer. In his senior season, Baker averaged 28.3 points for the Hawks, which lead to his selection as the eighth pick in the NBA draft.
While Baker's basketball ability always impressed, it was his kindness and good heart that amazed those who were close to him. In a Feb. 6 Associated Press article by Howard Ulman, Hartford's Athletic Director Pat Meiser-McKnett said, "I've been in college athletics 30 years, and he is just the best person."
Since his days at the University of Hartford, Baker has been on a roller coaster ride through the NBA.
