Kidd Cover images by Page Johnson Millions of people followed Thurl Bailey’s career as a star in the NBA.  As #41 on the Utah Jazz basketball team, he was at the top of his profession.  Today, people still follow Thurl – but they do it for a different reason.  He is a man who knows where he’s going, and he owes it all to his membership in the Church.  With his playing days behind him, Thurl is pursuing more careers simultaneously than most people pursue in a lifetime.  He is a basketball commentator for the Utah Jazz.  He is a motivational speaker.  He gives basketball camps, focusing his attentions on disadvantaged youth.  He is a singer with three CDs under his belt.  And in his free time, he has been known to appear in a movie or two. click to buy But he lives his life according to three simple questions – questions that were asked of him by border guards who stopped him whenever he drove from Italy to Switzerland.  “Where have you been?” they asked him.  “Why are you here?”  And finally, “Where are you going?”

Click here Thurl Bailey:  A Man as Big as His Vision of Life Text and photographs by Page Johnson  Thurl Bailey is what my father used to call a tall drink of water...a very tall one.  At 6 feet, 11 inches, the former National Basketball Association (NBA) star is a commanding presence wherever he goes, but it is his spirit more than his physical size that fills a room. When Thurl speaks, it is with a calm resonance that conveys both the depth and the expanse of that spirit. This was especially palpable on Sunday, February 13, when Thurl addressed an international crowd of over 500 at the Washington D.C. Temple Visitors’ Center that included ambassadors and dignitaries from Ghana Zimbabwe , and Ethiopia .   The event was part of the Visitors’ Center celebration of Black History Month, a national event every February which honors the contributions of black individuals in all fields.   In story and song, Thurl recounted not only his experiences as a basketball player, but also his personal journey of finding the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Adults and kids of all ages listenedtransfixed by Thurl’s size and bearingbut laughing and commiserating with him as he recalled his childhood efforts to learn basketball skills, try out for a team, and repeatedly face rejection.
