Thanks to funding from WyEAZs, the schools are participating in a RIF project that promotes the fun and fundamentals of reading by providing opportunities for young people to choose and keep free books. The aim of the project is to encourage reading for pleasure and to promote the benefits of book ownership. John, who currently appears on a nation-wide poster campaign for RIF, is a passionate supporter of literacy initiatives. "You can't go wrong by encouraging people to read," he says. "It's one of the few things you can't overkill." John is a mentor to two teenage boys and is currently studying for a PhD in child clinical psychology so that he can work with disaffected young people once he retires as a professional player.

JOHN AMAECHI Email John Amaechi John Amaechi Website JOHN AMAECHI HISTORY John first learned his basketball under coach Joe Forber as a 16 year old Stockport schoolboy. Prior to this, he was a rugby player of some renown but he preferred the round ball to the oval ball. Because of a fantastic work ethic, John made sufficient progress in 2 years in England to be recruited by an American High School, where he made such an impact that he was heavily recruited by American Colleges. At Penn State, he played in the Big 10 Conference which is one of the strongest Conferences in the USA. From Penn State, he was recruited by Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA where he became the first English player ever to start a game in the NBA. His travels since have taken him to Italy, Spain, France and Greece to play in top leagues in all these countries, before a highly successful 2-year spell with Orlando Magic in the NBA. John returned to England a few weeks before the Magic 2003/2004 season ended and was able to put on the Magic shirt for the first time and represent his hometown Club. His appearances gave the Club the highest of profiles and the Magic played to capacity audiences for the rest of the 2003/2004 season. Off the floor, he now intends to complete his studies as a doctor specialising in Child Psychology which, he has always insisted, is more important to him than his basketball career.

Basketball: John walks tall in land of giants
BY STUART brennan HOOP DREAMS: John Amaechi in NBA action for Orlando Magic JOHN Amaechi had a miserable time of it at school in Stockport. Taunted for his unusual height and chubby stature, he just didn't fit in - until he first clapped eyes on a basketball hoop.
Now, 15 years on, he is a multi-millionaire, the first British basketballer to play in the NBA.
But he has never forgotten the days of torment he endured as a kid, and is back in Manchester to put something back into the sport that transformed his life.
His misery as a child still resonates with Amaechi - and that is part of the reason why, as well as turning out for Utah Jazz on a £30,000-a-week contract, he is studying to be a child psychologist.
"Being overweight as a youngster helped to make me successful. And being picked on - or rather, the way my mother helped me to deal with that - was another factor," says the 32-year-old former Stockport Grammar School boy.
"I had my fair share of trials and tribulations as a youngster, and these days I have a good rapport with kids.

Basketball: John pleased to give sport a Rocket
AMAECHI: "It's good to be a veteran." ONLY a handful of Premiership footballers earn more than Stockport-born basketball star John Amaechi.
If reports are to be believed, Amaechi had a two-year contract with the Utah Jazz worth an estimated $5.2m.
He never collected the cash from them, though, because at the beginning of the month the outspoken star was sold to Houston Rockets, who will pick up the tab.
Despite finding wealth that was beyond his wildest dreams when he was an awkward schoolboy at Stockport Grammar, Amaechi has been a model professional.
Not for him lurid headlines of drug use, sleazy sex and gambling fixations.
Not that basketball hasn't had its share of unwanted publicity, with the rape case involving Kobe Bryant.
Allegations against Bryant swamped the sports pages during Manchester United's pre-season trip to the States.
However, the biggest controversy to involve `Meech' was a fan who sent an e-mail to his website, describing the former Orlando Magic favourite as "arrogant."

The pick is protected to within lottery range. Additionally, Houston gives the Jazz a conditional first round pick in 2004, acquired by the Rockets from Chicago in 2000. If Chicago retains the pick then the Jazz will receive two second round picks from Chicago, one in 2005 and 2006. Basketball Great Michael Jordan Fired by Washington Wizard’s Owners Abe Pollin and Ted Leonsis
According to Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, “you hate to say it, but I think MJ got used. Now, where are the Wizards? Both parties lose in all of this. Michael gets tainted, and the Wizards lose their No. 1 draw.” During his time at the Wizards, they became the most popular road draw and made $30 million, selling out every game. Michael Jordan, while playing for the Chicago Bulls in the ‘90s, led them to six NBA championship titles.

5-8-03. Bob Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television, has asked basketball legend, Michael Jordan to join his Charlotte expansion franchise. The two friends met at a Chicago Bulls game twelve years ago. According to Johnson, who purchased the yet-to-be-named team for $300 million, “absolutely I want him to be involved. He can play any role he wants to play, frankly.” Jordan is being shopped around by his representatives to other franchises, including the Chicago Bulls, whom he played for 13 years and the Atlanta Hawks, who are for sale.

By Alex Goff
Amaechi was born in Boston, but grew up in Manchester where his late mother had her medical practice. There he attended Stockport Grammar School where he played the only sport there was to play, rugby. As big, strong number 8, Meech found in rugby the refuge from a school experience he did not enjoy.
But then came another athletic calling. While preparing to play a rugby game, Meech saw some kids playing basketball. Now there was a game where he could use his height, he thought.
Toledo, Ohio
Amaechi saw his basketball skills develop, too, and he made a conscious decision to try to earn a spot in the NBA. To that end, he spent his senior year in living with a family in Toledo, Ohio.
Penn State
Meech graduated 11th in his class, and his basketball earned the attention of Vanderbilt University. After a year he transferred to Penn State in 1992, where he earned Academic All America honors twice. During his junior and senior years he led Penn State in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots, eventually setting a school record in the last category.
But the call of the oval ball was there at Penn State, too.

Broadcaster and basketball star John Amaechi is a rare thing – a Briton who has started 294 games in an 8-year stint in America's National Basketball Association!
John received special recognition in the NBA's Hall of Fame for scoring first points in the new millennium. In addition to his many athletic accomplishments, Amaechi is also a philanthropist who has devoted much of his time and finances to various charities and non-profit organizations. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 26, 1970, Amaechi was raised by his mother in Manchester, with his two younger sisters. His athletic career began as an aspiring rugby player and it was only a chance outing at the local basketball court that enticed Amaechi to give basketball a try. Soon basketball became his passion and by the age of 16, his dream was to play basketball professionally in the NBA. He and his mother formulated a plan for launching his career. Realizing that the best chance for stardom would be in the United States, Amaechi moved to Toledo, Ohio. As a high school basketball star, he was targeted by the country's top universities, and he ultimately signed to play for Vanderbilt University, though transferred to Penn State University a year later. In his three seasons at Penn State he was twice named First Team Academic All-American. After graduation he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association and played 28 games for them during the 1995-1996 season. The following year he returned to Europe and played for three seasons with teams from France, Italy, Greece, and England, before returning to the NBA with the Orlando Magic in 1999.

$7m deal for basketball star
John Amaechi playing for his old team Orlando magic.
GIANT John Amaechi used to be the butt of schoolground taunts about his size, but he's having the last laugh after picking up a huge pay cheque to match his massive frame. The 6ft 10ins former Stockport Grammar School pupil has become one of Britain's highest paid sports stars after signing a three year deal to play for the Utah Jazz basketball team in the USA. The deal, taking him from rivals Orlando Magic, is believed to be worth an incredible $7m. Only last year John turned down an even bigger payday - an amazing $17m to join the Los Angeles Lakers - preferring to stay loyal to Orlando. John's millionaire lifestyle is a far cry from his life at Stockport Grammar. At the age of 16 John says he was an overweight schoolboy who towered above all the other children in his class and was the butt of schoolyard jokes about his size. After first gaining a name for himself at rugby, John turned to basketball at 16 under coach and mentor Joe Forber.

John's lasting legacy
John Amaechi signs autographs at the launch of the new centre
ONE of America's top basketball stars returned to his roots when he opened a state-of-the-art basketball centre this week - paid for from his own pocket. Former Stockport Grammar School pupil and Utah Jazz player John Amaechi has made it big in the game but, as a noted philanthropist, he has never forgotten where he started. He was back in Manchester for the official opening of the Amaechi Basketball Centre at Whalley Range High School which is the new home of the Greater Manchester Basketball Youth Club and the Manchester Magic team as well as John's own summer camps for youngsters. As a teenager, John was an aspiring rugby player at Stockport Grammar School before discovering basketball aged 17 when he put his 6ft 10ins frame to good use under the direction of Joe Forber, who still runs the youth basketball club. He praised Joe Forber as his inspiration and added: "When I first started playing he drove me home from a game and turned to me and said: 'When are you going to take this game seriously?' Joe gave me the idea that I could be that good."

Darren Campbell
(b. 1975)
Darren Campbell, gold-medallist at the 1998 Budapest European Championships and silver-medallist at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, has been a member of the Sale Harriers Running Club since the age of 18, when he made his debut as a member of the 100 metres relay team at the 1993 Stuttgart World Championships. He had spent much of that year training in Australia with the likes of Linford Christie and Colin Jackson.
He is also a keen footballer and played for two successful seasons with Newport and at Weymouth Football Clubs, before returning to athletics. During the 1991 and 1992 he had developed into the most successful junior British athlete, with four Gold and two Silver Medals won at International Championships to his name.
After several very successful seasons, his performance deteriorated for a time with disappointing performances at the Olympic Trials in Birmingham in 1996 and an unfortunate episode in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was prevented from finishing the relay race when a team member dropped the baton before it reached him.

http://www.rif.org.uk/news/events.htm
RIF Ambassador, John Amaechi, visits RIF project to celebrate World Book Day Tuesday 1 March was a very special day for the children and staff at Stockwell Primary School in Lambeth as they met a very special visitor. John Amaechi, RIF Ambassador and ex-NBA basketball legend, visited the school to celebrate World Book Day. All the nursery children are in the RIF project and there were gasps of "Isn't he tall?" as John joined them for a storytelling session. At 6' 9", John joked that he was not like the giants that the children read about in books, because he likes children. Feeling somewhat relieved, the two nursery classes shared their favourite story of The Gingerbread Man. Three fantastic four-year-olds read the story, a group of actors and a very smiley Gingerbread Man performed the story, while the whole nursery joined in with the actions. Having been entertained with stories and songs, the children showed off their class library of new and exciting books. It was then the turn of KS2 to meet John, and he entered the hall to a wild round of applause. The children had thoroughly researched their topic and asked some excellent questions about John's basketball career. They were very keen to learn more about the books that he likes to read, as well as finding out about the inspiration behind his poetry. The children came away appreciating the dedication required to be a professional sportsman and understanding that sport, like reading, needs practice but it can always be fun.
