Ainge Receives Contract Extension
POSTED: 2:44 pm EDT May 20, 2005 Boston, MA Boston Celtics executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge received a three-year contract extension on Friday. The deal will keep him with the club through the 2008-09 campaign. The 46-year-old Ainge took over his current position on May 9, 2003. This past season, Boston captured the Atlantic Division title and the third seed in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics were then eliminated from the postseason in the first round by the Indiana Pacers. "On behalf of our organization, I am pleased that Danny has signed an extension to his contract to be with us for the next several years," said Celtics managing partner Steve Pagliuca. "Danny is a winner and over the last two years has brought an exciting group of young, talented players to Boston, has attracted a terrific coach in Doc Rivers, and together they have delivered our first Atlantic Division championship for many years. He is committed to making the Celtics championship contenders once again." Ainge played for the Celtics from 1981-89 and helped lead the team to championships in 1984 and 1986. He finished his career with Boston averaging 11.3 points and 4.4 assists per game, while hitting 38.6 percent of his three- point shots.

All of the coveted free agents are unpacking the boxes and settling into their new homes after a busy offseason for some. We are now starting to see the role players catch on with new squads. A lot of the recent signings are likely to spend a significant amount of time on the 'injured list', providing depth for teams as they set up for the regular season. The new 'amnesty' rule will see a few big-name players such as Michael Finley and Jerome Williams joining new clubs in the next week or two. The Suns have been courting Finley, trying to draw the veteran back for a second go-around with the team. The Heat is also pursuing Finley, trying to piece together an impressive club to make a run at the NBA Championship. Other players double-dipping salary from their old club, as well as their new club in 2005-06, will include Derek Anderson, Doug Christie, Brian Grant
