Despite being the principal owner of the greatest franchise in basketball, the Boston Celtics, Wyc Grousbeck seems to exemplify humility on the telephone. He speaks as though Danny Ainge were his boss and insists the Celtics belong to the fans and city of Boston rather than him and his partners. He’s incredibly excited about the team Ainge has assembled.
Gregg Ruais: What did the Celtics mean to you as you were growing up in New England?
Wyc Grousbeck: I was born in Worcester and raised in Boston, and the Celtics were a big part of my childhood. The Bruins, the Red Sox – really all four sports were important to me. I would go to games with my dad, and we’d watch the games on TV together. Sports were huge for me until I went away to college in ’79.
GR: Did you have a favorite player?
WG: I really tuned in when the big stars were Havlicek, Jo Jo White, and Cowens.
GR: When did you start thinking about owning the team?

For The Love of Danny Ainge
by Ellen Neises (From Ball In #2) Growing up in the 70s and 80s, I didn’t play basketball in junior high or high school. Still, I was crazy about the game and devoted to a few particular players, especially Danny Ainge. I haven’t shared this admission with anyone outside of those people who have watched games with me in the past few years. If I like these people well enough, I will compromise myself (the best way I know make friends) by telling the pie story. When I was 14, my family moved to a house just a block-and-a-half from Boston Garden. In those days, the Celtics had one of the better teams ever, and tickets to a game in the relatively small Garden were controlled by a mysterious patronage system. I didn’t seem to have the right kind of patrons, so I mostly watched the Celts on television. We got the feel of the real thing on the street before and after big games. There were quite a few sports and “live entertainment” bars across from the Garden – places where men called each other “pally”, haircuts were bad (even by Bostonian standards), and my brother knew some of the bartenders. If the Celtics lost, some of the less discriminating players might turn up at the local nightspots. Celebrations always took place elsewhere. These bars generated some good neighborhood “up close and personal” stories. For example, when Larry Bird’s hand was heavily taped throughout a playoff series, and the media, even Globe sportswriters, had nothing to say about it, I got this story from my brother: Bird had been drinking in one of those Garden-spot bars and decided to paw the bartender’s girlfriend. When the woman and the bartender asked Bird to stop, Larry sucker-punched the bartender and broke his jaw. The next morning, Celtics operatives delivered to the bartender’s house a substantial cash settlement in exchange for his silence about the incident. I felt privileged to know the scoop. Larry Bird, a basketball genius admired by young and old, was actually a jerk.

    I Might Be Wrong
Hooooooooooboy. Not sure to start with this flaming pile of BS. Fatoine Walker can't let go. Today he disses Celtic Director of Basketball Operations and resident genius Danny Ainge. Guess whose side I am on? I'll let Fatoine start: "Danny wanted to get rid of me," said Walker. "If you look at the trade, I think he really felt like I wouldn't mesh with these guys in Dallas. Me, personally, I think he was really trying to set my career back a little bit. If you really look at what I got traded for, it's got to be the biggest difference [in talent] in history . Usually, an All-Star gets traded for an All-Star. And you gave away Tony Delk, a proven scorer in this league." "I never had a relationship with him. I knew he was going to be a snake. Walker acknowledged he "wasn't trying to have a relationship" with Ainge, in no small part because of negative comments Ainge made as an analyst. Walker contends that his close relationship with Celtics coach Jim O'Brien, as well as a number of staff members and front office personnel, threatened Ainge... I was like, `Just trade me now because I know you're not going to pay me. So, just trade me now." "I'm sure he probably regrets [making the deal]. He'll probably never admit he regrets it. I know he knows what situation he put me in. So, [the Mavericks] winning is not surprising him. But if I'm able to succeed individually and have a good season. Then, obviously, if Boston doesn't do well, he's going to regret it. You go to the Eastern Conference finals and then the second round of the playoffs. You only have a little window of opportunity. Now, if you take a step back and don't make the playoffs, and if every year, you're fighting to be around .500, he's going to regret it. That means he came in and set the organization back instead of moving it forward. He won't regret it so much as the owners will regret it. Really, really, really, regret it. I think to win a championship you've got to have two superstars.

Take it from Seattle SuperSonics guard Ray Allen: Actors, not athletes, attract the best women, though women are attracted to basketball players most among athletes. Allen revealed those tidbits to actor Chico Benymon of the UPN show "Half and Half" in an interview posted on Page 3 at ESPN.com. "We've got some fans who want to know what athletes get the best girls" among football players and basketball players, Benymon said to Allen. "Basketball players," said Allen, the former Bucks star guard. "We get the best girls, easy. Most guys play basketball just so they can get the girls when they're in high school. "The difference in sports is that football players always have their helmets on, so you only see a select few that the league markets. With basketball players - especially in your city - all 12 of those guys are marketed pretty heavily. So, when you live in a particular city, say L.A., everybody in L.A. knows the Lakers. So some buster can't come up and say, 'I play for the Lakers.' But he can say, 'I play for the Dodgers.' "

Celtics and Payton Playing a Classic Game
      By sgabekahn , Section NBA
Posted on Fri Aug 20, 2004 at 09:17:38 AM EST Chances are that even if you're relatively wet behind the ears you'll have at least some recognition when I mention the game of chicken that James Dean and Corey Allen played in Rebel Without a Cause. In the film's defining scene, Dean's character Jim races Allen's character Buzz off a cliff in the ultimate contest testing the machismo of the adolescents. In the end, Buzz goes down in a blaze of glory, while Jim, bruised ego and all, goes on to learn the error of his ways and along the way bags Natalie Wood and boosts the sale of under shirts by, like a billion percent. Good stuff. Anyway, as we speak, Celtics' Executive Director of Basketball Relations Danny Ainge and new Celtic point guard Gary Payton are involved in a similar type of game. Payton, along with Rick Fox, a first round draft pick and cash, was officially acquired by the Celtics from the Lakers in return for Chucky Atkins, Chris Mihm and the indomitable Jumaine Jones on Monday and Payton is none too pleased about it. Everyone was aware of Payton's shock and chagrin in regards to the trade when it was first reported on the sixth of August just before he was to go on a Disney cruise with his family. Upon returning from his time at sea, Payton then left little doubt of his intentions, telling the Riverside Press-Enterprise "I'll retire before I go to Boston." Payton added that he would be willing to be traded to Minnesota, Houston or the LA Clippers and that "it ain't no disrespect to Boston." None taken Gary! All joking aside, it's not an easy task moving from Los Angeles to Boston, even if you're a multi-millionaire. After living in Seattle for 14 years, Payton moved his family to LA this summer and his daughter was to start school next week. Also, little trade secret here so don't let this get out, but the winters in the Bay State can be awfully harsh.
