"I learned early on that there's a place inside oneself that no one else can violate," he explained. "We have a right to protect that place." The top NBA draft pick, he joined the Milwaukee Bucks, changed his name, and converted from Catholicism to the black orthodox Hanafi sect. "I saw Islam as the correct way to live , and I chose to try to live that way," said the star. Traded to Los Angeles, the remarkable Number 33 led the Lakers to five NBA championships (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988) and dominated the game, setting personal and team records. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar The exploits of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor) leave no room for conjecture. Ever since bursting onto the national scene at New York City's Power Memorial High School, he has been magnificent. A 7'2", 225-lb. center, Jabbar has withstood inordinate pressure. He was a 3-time All-American prep while losing only once in 117 games. Proportionate feats were expected once he enrolled at UCLA to play for John Wooden. UCLA's successful recruiting effort was aided by the work of 2 famous alumni, Dr. Ralph Bunche and Jackie Robinson. He didn't disappoint them. He was the major factor in the Bruins' 88-2 3-year record (1967-1969) which produced 3 national championships and a 47-game winning streak. In unprecedented fashion, Abdul-Jabbar was selected MVP in all 3 NCAA championship tournaments. A history major with an IQ of 131, he set collegiate marks for career field-goal percentage (.639) and season (.667). In 3 years, he averaged 26.4 points and 15.5 rebounds.
