In Muslim America: A Presence and a Challenge
by Daniel Pipes
National Review
February 21, 2000
An odd controversy briefly dominated the sports pages in March 1996. A player in the National Basketball Association, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, refused to follow the league's rule requiring that players stand in a "dignified posture" during the national anthem. Instead, since the beginning of the 1995-96 season, Abdul-Rauf had remained seated during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. A black, 27-year-old former Baptist from Mississippi who had converted to Islam in 1991, he declared that as a Muslim, he could not pay homage to the American flagwhich he called a "symbol of oppression, of tyranny." He argued further that the flag directly contradicted his Islamic faith: "This country has a long history of [oppression]. I don't think you can argue the facts. You can't be for God and for oppression. It's clear in the Koran. Islam is the only way."
The NBA responded firmly, suspending Abdul-Rauf until he agreed to obey league rules. He missed one game, then capitulated. Two factors probably weighed most heavily on him: losing a cool $31,707 for each game missed, and facing wide opposition to his decision from other Muslims.

by Mike Folland Brooks Meek-Anderson, who has been a starter for Lewis & Clark's basketball team the past three years and averaged 21 points per game last year, is fierce and competitive. When people watch him, they ask themselves, "Just what is going through Meek's head?" When Meek steals the ball, he said, "The first thing I'm thinking of is dunking it." Standing only 5'10.5", Meek makes up for his height by athletic ability and his aggression both defensively and offensively. "There is only one way to play and that is just really competitive. Really competitive," Meek said. Coach Bob Gaillard said that Meek has assumed a leadership role on the team and that one of his best traits is the tenacity with which he plays. The most important thing to Meek is playing as hard as he can and having fun at the same time. Meek said, "If you're playing basketball at this level for any thing more than having fun then you probably aren't in it for the right reason." Not only is basketball more fun to watch or play than any other sport, but Meek said that when he plays basketball he can forget about what is going on in his life and just have fun. "It's like a two-hour sanctuary," he said.

Star-Spangled Business: Labor, Patriotism, and Michael Jordan in a Nike Advertisement By Jes Cortes The National Anthem plays. Michael Jordan-as the CEO of his own shoe company-faces the camera close-up as he inspects shoes. He squeezes them, and looks at them from different angles. His expressions are scrutinizing and then approving. An inspection tag inscribed with the number 23 flashes across the screen. This scene is repeated three times and then the camera slowly zooms out, revealing a luxurious and spacious corporate suite piled high with shoe boxes. A television in the periphery of the suite displays in sequence the American Flag, the Statue of Liberty, and Mount Rushmore. Judging from certain statistics, it might seem that Nike is living up to its namesake goddess of victory. Company founder Philip Night has a net worth of $5.3 billion and Nike has a cozy endorsement relationship with the world's wealthiest ($78 million net worth) and most worshipped athlete, Michael Jordan. All, however, is not well at the world's most famous footwear corporation. Nike's business operations, in particular evidence of abusive labor conditions, have drawn criticism from human rights groups such as Amnesty International, politicians and even mainstream newspapers. Two members of Congress recently circulated a letter to Knight-signed by 53 other members of Congress-demanding that Nike begin to treat Asian workers "with respect, dignity and decent wages," and create more Nike jobs in the United States.

Turning her back on the flag
February 25, 2003 BY CAROL SLEZAK SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST Just when you thought all college athletes were unable to see beyond the walls of the gym, along comes one to prove you wrong. Toni Smith plays basketball for Division III Manhattanville. The 5-10 senior guard/forward is averaging 5.4 points and 8.2 rebounds. WNBA-bound, she is not. But a growing number of Americans will remember her name long after they've forgotten the top pick in the next WNBA draft. Before each game this season, Smith has purposefully turned away from the U.S. flag as the national anthem has been played. Smith never expected her quiet act to cause a commotion, and for most of the season, it went almost unnoticed. That changed when Manhattanville played at the Merchant Marine Academy earlier this month. There, midshipmen in the stands rallied against Smith, waving flags and calling her unpatriotic. Since then, there have been protests against Smith at every Manhattanville game. During a Manhattanville home game Sunday, a Vietnam veteran ran onto the court and held an American flag in front of Smith.

March 14, 1996
Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf decided that telling the truth was more important than his NBA career and $2.6 million contract. His Islamic and political beliefs prevent him from promoting the emblem of his oppressors. In a country where religious beliefs (at least Christian religious beliefs) are protected, Abdul-Rauf's position should be admired. The outrage over his stance only points out the deep racial divide in this country. Whether he returns to basketball or not, Abdul-Rauf is a roll model. He is a dignified man of integrity. The NBA players and coaches should refuse to play any more games until the rules are reversed. Anti-patriotism is not a crime. Robert Rockwell, M.D.

1990-91: Denver Names New GM And New Coach
For 1990-91 former Seattle SuperSonics Coach Bernie Bickerstaff was named general manager of the Nuggets. Bickerstaff had 19 years of NBA experience, as an assistant coach with the Washington Bullets and then as the head man at Seattle. His 1986-87 Sonics had been a group of overachievers who ascended to the Western Conference Finals. At Denver, Bickerstaff inherited one of the NBA's oldest rosters. He began by replacing Head Coach Doug Moe, who had piloted the Nuggets for more than nine seasons, with Paul Westhead, who had previously coached the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers. At the time of his hiring Westhead was coaching at Loyola Marymount University, where he had implemented a wacky, wide-open offensive system that had made the Lions the highest-scoring collegiate team in the nation.
