INTRODUCTION
In 1965, Sandy Koufax, a Jewish baseball player, refused to pitch in the first game of the World Series because it fell on a holy day, Yom Kippur. In 1967, numerous state boxing commissions stripped Muhammad Ali of his boxing license and of his heavyweight title when, as a result of his Muslim beliefs, he refused to step forward for the draft during the Vietnam conflict. More recently, in 1996, the National Basketball Association ("NBA") suspended then Denver Nugget Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf without pay when he refused to abide by a league rule that requires "players to line up in a dignified posture for the anthem." Abdul-Rauf claimed that his Muslim beliefs precluded him from participating in the National Anthem because the Koran forbids participation in any "nationalistic ritualism."

TRANSCRIPT
The recent conflict over basketball player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's refusal to stand during the National Anthem has sparked debate over the balance between religious and patriotic duty. Following a report on the controversy by Tom Bearden, Charlayne Hunter-Gault discusses Islam's growing role with an expert and the social impact with essayist Roger Rosenblatt. CHARLAYNE HUNTER-GAULT: A battle of wills between the National Basketball Association and one of its star players ended today. It was a struggle that stirred up strong feelings about religion and patriotism. Tom Bearden begins our report. TOM BEARDEN: Twenty-seven-year-old Mississippi-born Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, is a five-year NBA veteran. Formerly known as Chris Jackson, he changed his name in 1991 after converting to Islam. Abdul-Rauf is one of the Denver Nuggets' best players, averaging 19.6 points per game. He leads the league in free throw percentage, making 93 percent of his foul shots. Unlike his teammates, Abdul Rauf has not stood during the National Anthem for the entire season. Most of the time he didn't come onto the court until the opening ceremonies were over. But his actions escaped widespread public attention until this week. Reaction was immediate and overwhelmingly negative. UNIDENTIFIED MAN: I think it's ridiculous! I respect his religious beliefs, but he should also respect the fact that he lives in a country greater than any other, and it's a matter of standing out of respect.

The witch hunt against Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf
The National Basketball Association, in suspending Denver Nuggets' basketball player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and the media, in conducting a witch hunt against the athlete, demonstrated both hypocrisy and extreme sensitivity to the intrusion of political and social reality into the world of sports. Citing his Muslim beliefs, Abdul-Rauf refused to stand for the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner," contravening an NBA regulation. He explained his action by stating that the US flag was a "symbol of oppression, of tyranny. This country has a long history of that. I don't think you can argue the facts." Indeed tens of millions around the world would not. Abdul-Rauf has been unobtrusively refusing to stand for the anthem for some time. It only became an issue when talk show hosts in Denver caught on to the fact and played up the issue. The player was accused of a lack of patriotism, profaning the memory of those who had died in US uniforms and so on. The NBA front office, responding to the jingoistic campaign, promptly suspended him. Abdul-Rauf then agreed to abide by the league rule, saying he would pray during the national anthem instead. The NBA's claim about the sanctity of the anthem is absurd. When its playing threatens to interfere with valuable television time, during a network broadcast, for instance, "The Star-Spangled Banner" is performed 20 minutes ahead of time to a half-empty arena.
