He threw three no-hitters, including the first perfect game in the new American League. He was among the original twelve players inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame, and his name is now attached to the game's most prestigious pitching award. Yet for all his accomplishments, Cy Young remains to most baseball fans a legendary but little known figure. In this book, Reed Browning re-creates the life of Denton True "Cyclone" Young and places his story in the context of a rapidly changing turn-of-the-century America. Born in rural Ohio, the son of a Civil War veteran, Young learned his trade at a time when only underhand pitching was permitted. When he began his professional career in 1890, pitchers wore no gloves and stood five feet closer to the batter than they do today. By the time he retired in 1911, the game of baseball had evolved into its modern form and claimed unquestioned status as America's "national pastime."

"Each year the top pitchers in both leagues are honored with the Cy Young Award, but how many of today's fans really know much about the winningest hurler of them all? Browning digs deep to uncover the real story behind this pitching legend, whose innovations were essential to baseball's growth in the 19th and early 20th century."

What is the distribution of talent for each of the awards? Here are the players receiving votes for each divided into Win Shares totals with the percent of each group to the whole also listed: Win Shares MVP Cands CY Cand Note that an MVP candidate may have as few as three Win Shares while no player with fewer than seven Win Shares has ever received a vote for the Cy Young. Comments Mike,
Sorry if I'm missing your point, but wouldn't it have been much more surprising the other way, if Cy Young votes *didn't* have a closer correlation with win shares? In general, it just seems that there's less messing around on a Cy Young ballot. Small ballot means fewer votes for off-the-wall choices low on the ballot, as compared with the MVP. We don't have nut-ball arguments about "value" versus performance in order to slight a particular candidate. Much less sense that a guy has to be on a winning team, and much less resistance to a guy winning multiple awards. On MVP ballots you have a lot of wild guesses about defense, or defense ignored altogether. In a Cy Young race, it's not a factor. It seems to me that the crude tools (w-l record and era) do a much better job of nailing the most valuable pitcher than the triple crown stats do identifying the best position player.

The Baseball Time Machine: Denny Young
by Steve Treder December 14, 2004 It's time we took another ride aboard the Baseball Time Machine. Here's a reminder of what these journeys are all about: We take a player from the long past. We make the assumption that his exact genetic clone - the same DNA - appeared on the planet in a much later era, an era we're quite familiar with: the current era. We make the further assumption that this kid grew up to become a big league ballplayer, as did the original. Then we apply everything we know about (a) the innate qualities of the player and (b) the conditions of the current era, and come up with our best depiction of just what kind of a player the guy would be: just how well would he do, competing against modern players, under modern conditions?

Clemens may be Young, but he's ready to walk away
November 9, 2004 So how does a pitcher who wins an unprecedented seventh Cy Young Award, as Roger Clemens did this afternoon, walk away from the game? "Easy," Clemens said without hesitation, just hours before receiving a call here informing him he'd won. "Like I said, I was happy last season, but it wasn't fun. I worked real hard." Hard enough, at age 42, to become the oldest pitcher ever to be honored as the best pitcher in his league. Clemens, who is here with a team of touring major-league all-stars playing their Japanese counterparts, was called just after 2 a.m. Japan time, according to one of his agents, Jim Murray, by Jack O'Connell, secretary-treasurer of the Baseball Writers Assn. of America, informing him that he has another trophy waiting for him upon his return to his hometown of Houston. Clemens received 24 first-place votes in easily outdistancing Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks. After calling his wife, Debbie, with the news, he begged off an interview, claiming he needed to get some rest before his scheduled start Wednesday night (4:30 a.m. Boston time) here in the Osaka Dome. Before taking the bullet train here from Fukuoka ahead of his teammates, who were beating the Japan stars, 7-2, Clemens spoke of the award's significance to him.

Cy Young win unlikely to influence Clemens' decision on '05
    By RICHARD JUSTICE
    Question:
Congrats to Roger Clemens and, by extension, the Astros ... Clemens had a fantastic year, perhaps as good a year as any 40-plus pitcher has ever had. Not to mention that he probably should've been at least 22-or-23 and 4, rather than just 18-4. It's not a World Series win, but it does set him up to "go out on top" personally. Will his seventh Cy Young bring Roger closer to retirement or will it simply spur him on to the bigger prize for Houston? Jonathan in Baton Rouge Chronicle file Roger Clemens, who put off retirement to pitch for the Astros this year, became the first player in baseball history to win seven Cy Young Awards. •

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Young, Cy (1867-1955), American baseball player, whose memory inspired an award for the best major-league pitcher. He was born Denton True Young in Gilmore, Ohio . In 1890, after playing for the Canton , Ohio, team of the Tri-State League, he became a pitcher with the Cleveland club, then in the National League. Leaving the Cleveland team in 1898, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League (1899-1900) and the Boston Red Sox of the American League (1901-1908). On May 5, 1904, Young became the first American League player to pitch a perfect game, that is, to allow no batters to reach first base. He retired from baseball in 1911, after playing two seasons for the Cleveland Indians of the American League and part of a season for the Boston Braves of the National League. During his 22 years in the major leagues Young pitched three no-hit games. He pitched in 906 games and won 511, the latter figure a major league record. In 1937 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In his honor, the Cy Young Award for the best major league pitcher of the year was established in 1956; since 1967 the award has been given to the best pitcher in each league.
