Among his greatest individual feats are a game of May 5, 1904, when not one of the hard-hitting Athletics reached first base, and another June 30, 1908, against the Highlanders, when only one man got "on" in nine innings. Prior to 1910 he failed only three times in his many years pitching to turn in a majority of victories. In 1910 he won his 500th game, an unsurpassed record. August 12, 1908, "Cy" Young Day was celebrated in Boston. He was presented with the entire receipts of the game, and more silverware and floral designs than he could carry. CY Young Throwing Baseball
Cy Young is pictured full-length throwing a baseball with the Boston Red Sox . Cy Young's endurance as a pitcher is still unmatched, starting more than 800 games, pitching more than 7,000 innings, and lasting 23 seasons because he never had a sore arm. He had more wins, innings pitched, games started, and complete games than any other pitcher, and still holds those records. I've joked in the past that any Rockies starter who can put up an ERA under 4.00 for a season should automatically get the Cy Young Award. Well, Chacon currently has an ERA of 1.04, and he's started four of his five games in Denver! A great start for the young hurler. Posted by David Pinto at 06:30 PM Pitchers TrackBack (0) Navigation

A History of the History of the MVP and Cy Young Awards
by Ray Flowers
September 17, 2004
(The information below is gathered from Total Baseball, 7th edition, pp.192-194 for the MVP portion of the paper, and pp.205-206 for the Cy Young segment) MVP HISTORY In 1922, the American League established a new set of rules and procedures and decided to reinstate the award after neither league awarded a trophy from 1915 to 1921 (the National League followed suit, though it waited until 1924 to reinstate its award). However, a few quirks in the original rules deserve mention. So disenchanted were those in the know with the whole process involved with the award, that on May 6, 1929, the AL award ceased to exist meaning that the 1928 winner would be its last (the NL followed suit, but only after awarding a winner for the 1929 season).

History
As a baseball writer and president of the National League, Ford Frick was bothered by the fact that pitchers rarely received any consideration for the Most Valuable Player awards. After becoming commissioner of baseball in 1951, Frick began a campaign to establish an award for the outstanding pitcher in the major leagues. He finally succeeded in 1956, when the Baseball Writers Association of America (BWAA) approved such an award. It was named the Cy Young Memorial Award, for the great pitcher who had died in November of 1955. Originally, one BWAA member from each major league city took part in the balloting and was allowed to vote for just one pitcher. If there was a tie, a second vote was taken, with only the tied pitchers on the ballot. Once a pitcher won the award, he wasn't eligible to win again. However, that rule was abandoned in 1958. Many BWAA members wanted an award for each major league, but Frick opposed that idea. It was finally adopted in 1967, a little more than a year after Frick retired and was replaced by William D. Eckert. At the same time, the vote was expanded to include two writers from each major league city.

Denton True Young March 29 November 4 ) was the pre-eminent baseball pitcher during the and . His nickname "Cy" is either short for "Cyclone" (since barns and fences supposedly showed cyclonic damage after encountering one of his pitches) or for a generic term of the time for a farmboy, similar to "Rube". Cy Young warming up for Boston in 1908 He was born in Gilmore, Ohio Young is generally considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time. Not only is he a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame (elected in ), but the Cy Young Award , the annual award given to the best major league pitchers in each league, is named in his honor. Young set a career record for wins, 511, that will probably never be matched under current conditions. Today, most seasons produce few pitchers with more than 20 wins, at which pace a pitcher would have to pitch for more than 25 years to surpass the record. Young's great longevity means he also holds the record for the most losses, despite winning 62% of his decisions. Young began his major league career in 1890 with the Cleveland Spiders and achieved stardom rapidly. He was one of the few star hurlers to maintain his level of success after the pitching mound was moved back to its present 60 feet 6 inches in

This in-depth study tells of a career that spanned a long period in baseball history, one in which the game was transformed several times. Annotation: This sports biography of Denton True "Cy" Young chronicles his life and his 22-year career in baseball where he was, some argue, the greatest pitcher of all time. Young pitched the first "perfect game" in 1904 and the award for best pitcher in the major leagues is named after him. The author is professor of history at Kenyon College, and he places Young within the context of his times and the history of the sport.

Cy Young is one of the immortal legends of baseball pitching. He was one of the best of his era, with a strong fastball attributed to doing rail-splitting work before going into baseball. He came from Eastern Ohio, starting in 1890 as Denton True Young but was nicknamed Cy for his cyclone -like fastball by a young catcher for an Ohio minor league team. He was also noted for his appearance, which was not that of a normal baseball player. He had dangly arms

One of the best athletes to ever play the game he posted a 1.12 ERA in 1968, the lowest figure since 1914, and a factor in convincing baseball officials to lower the pitching mound the next year. Known as a premier big-game pitcher, Gibson posted World Series records of seven consecutive wins and 17 strikeouts in a game, both of which remain unbroken. Bob Gibson has hand signed this official baseball and inscribed "2x Cy Young". A Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity is included.
