RED SOX LEGENDS
Carl Yastrzemski - 1961-1983
When Red Sox legend Ted Williams retired after the 1960 season, Opening Day of the 1961 season saw a fresh-faced rookie with the number eight on his back take Williams' spot in front of the Green Monster. 23 years later, Yastrzemski, or "Yaz" as Red Sox fans everywhere knew him, retired with the assurance that he would follow Williams into the Hall of Fame. Yastrzemski was already well-known by 1967, having made the American League All-Star team three times in his first six seasons, but that was the year that the Red Sox went from finishing ninth the year before to winning the American League pennant for the first time in 21 years. That year, Yaz won not only League MVP honors but the batting Triple Crown of baseball after averaging .326 at the plate, driving in 121 runs, and leaving the yard 44 times; he is the last player to have accomplished that feat in either league and joined Williams as the only Red Sox players to have earned that recognition. His team, by finishing first, earned the right to play the St. Louis Cardinals; although they lost in seven games, Yaz did his part, batting .400 with three home runs and five RBI. Steady production at the plate continued to be the norm for Yaz through his career, although he only batted .285 for his career and better than .300 in a season six times. Still, he managed to collect 3419 hits, sixth all-time in major league history, and knocked out 452 home runs; Yastrzemski is only the four player ever to collect 3000 hits and 400 home runs, joining Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays, and the only American League player to have done so. Yaz also won seven Gold Gloves as an outfielder between 1963 and 1977, though he also saw many games at first base and, later in his career, as the designated hitter. Yaz also appeared in just one most post-season as a member of the 1975 pennant winners. In the AL championship series against Oakland, Yaz was again clutch at the plate, batting .455 with a home run and two RBI; in the World Series, he batted .310 with four RBI.

MLB Greatest Players THE 50 GREATEST MLB PLAYERS Charlie Gehringer The best second baseman in baseball during the 1930s, Gehringer led his league in assists seven times, and nine times in fielding average. At the plate he topped .300 13 times and won the 1937 MVP Award when he paced the AL with a .371 average. He was no punch and judy hitter either - seven times he drove in 100 runs. He was so automatic that he was dubbed the "Mechanical Man." With Hank Greenberg and Goose Goslin, Gehringer formed the vaunted Detroit "G-Men" attack of the 1930s. With Gehringer, the Tigers won three pennants in seven years and their first World Series title in 1935. In that World Series, Gehringer scored the winning run.

One Extraordinary Game, One Extraordinary Tradition by Catherine Cottrell
Growing up in my house, sports were around like Sunday church services and family dinners. From the time that I can remember, baseball was the most prevalent of the sports focused on by my family. Games were always on the TV. My father, a Dodger's fan, would always catch the L.A. games when they were on. When my dad told me bedtime stories, I heard about Duke Snyder and Willie Mays, Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium instead of fairy tales. He taught me how to throw, catch, and bat, but he also imparted to me the history of the game. All through my youth I was a never- ending fountain of questions about baseball, and Dad always seemed to have the answers. Given the way I grew up, it isn't surprising that my and my dad's family tradition is going to a major league baseball park each year. We go in August, the dog days of summer when the boys of summer are racing for the pennant and baseball is at its classic point. The trip lasts a weekend, Friday through Sunday, so we can catch a weekend three game series. In the spring of each year, Dad and I decide on where we should go. The only requirement is that the park we visit is one filled with tradition and that represents the soul of baseball. Our first trip, two years ago, was to Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. This year's trip was to Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. The idea for our tradition came from a trip that my brother and father took to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Our family was on vacation in north Georgia when we got news that the Seminoles had made it to Omaha. Two days later, my mom and I were dropping my father and brother, Keith, off at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia so that they could catch their flight to Omaha to see the CWS. After that incident I was jealous, and I decided that a father daughter baseball trip was in line for Dad and 1. In order to "get back" at Keith for the CWS trip, I play a good- natured joke on him each year. Where and when Dad and I go to the ballparks, are kept secret from my brother. Then, when we get to the park for the first game and the starting lineups are being announced, I call Keith and tell him where we are. The humor, quite obviously, is more on my side than his, but he bears it well.
