Primary Team: Boston Red Sox
Post-Season: 1967 World Series, 1975 ALCS, 1975 World Series Awards: All-Star (18): 1963, 1965-1979, 1982-1983; American League MVP 1967; Gold Glove (7): 1963, 1965, 1967-1969, 1971, 1977; All-Star Game MVP 1970 Hitting Bio When Carl Yastrzemski retired in 1983 after 23 seasons in Boston, he was the all-time Red Sox leader in eight major categories - games, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, RBI and extra base hits. An intense performer, Yaz played in more games (3,308) than any other American Leaguer, topping 3,000 hits and 400 home runs. A 14-time All-Star, he won seven Gold Glove Awards. A three-time batting champion, Yastrzemski was the American League MVP in 1967 when he won the Triple Crown, batting .326 with 121 RBI and 44 home runs. Quote "Yaz did it all the time. We'd be on the road and he'd call, 'C'mon, we're going to the ballpark.' I'd say, 'Christ, it's only one o'clock. The game's at seven.' He lived, breathed, ate, and slept baseball. If he went 0-for-4, he couldn't live with it. He could live with himself if he went 1-for-3. He was happy if he went 2-for-4. That's the way the man suffered."

"Ed (Runge), you're the second best umpire in the league. The other twenty-three are tied for first." "I knew when the ball was going out (over the Green Monster). It was something I worked into the decoy, but it used to tick the pitchers off. Bill Monbouquette used to say, 'Can't you at least make it look like you can catch it?' Meanwhile, the ball would be on its way over the fence to a spot three-quarters of the way out to the railroad tracks." "If that guy (

CARL YASTRZEMSKI
Arriving in 1961 to replace legend Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzremski eventually won the hearts of Boston fans, and became arguably more popular than Williams. He won three batting titles and played a Gold Glove left field in front of the Green Monster. In 1967 he hit .379 with nine homers and 22 RBI in the Sox' final 39 games to carry the team to the World Series. Eight seasons later, a more veteran Yaz helped the Sox return to the Series, only to lose in the seventh game again. He retired in 1983 among the all-time leaders in games, hits and RBI.

He hit a blistering .455 in the 1975 ALCS and .310 in that year's World Series. In the famous 1978 playoff game against the Yankees, he hit a home run off the nearly-unbeatable Ron Guidry. Thus, in his 17 post-season games, the final 12 games of the 1967 season, and the 1978 one-game AL East playoff - the 30 most important games of his long career - Yaz hit .430 (49-for-114) with 10 homers, 29 RBI, and 31 runs scored.

TED WILLIAMS
No one cared more about hitting than Ted Williams, and few ever did it better. In a career interrupted twice by war, Williams still managed to post incredible numbers. He was the last man to bat over .400, in 1941. He hit for power, average, and had a remarkable eye at the plate. He was the first man for whom opposing teams consistently attempted to come up with defensive schemes to stop him.

Managed
Washington Senators (1969-1971), Texas Rangers (1972)
It's common knowledge that most great players fail to make great managers. With a few exceptions, this is true. Williams skippered the Senators from 1969 to 1971, following them to Texas for the '72 season. Thus, he was the first manager in Ranger history. He guided the Senators to a winning mark and a 4th place finish in 1969 (largely due to Frank Howard's slugging), but the team gradually faded over his last three years. He finished his managerial career with a .429 career mark (273-364). Like Rogers Hornsby, Williams failed to communicate well with his players, especially the pitchers, whom he dislkied. Post-Season 1946 World Series World Champion?
