My apologies for the brief hiatus. It seems hard to believe that I’ve been away from this site for almost two months, but a new job (new career actually) and a very pregnant wife (see photo below) have pared my free time down significantly. With the long exhausting hours and incessant trips to the grocery store for strawberries, ice cream, and Oreo cookies, I’ve had fewer opportunities to watch the Braves play the past few months.
Perhaps this was a blessing in disguise as the team struggled to a combined 26-30 record during May and June while showing signs that they were becoming the mediocre team that in the back of our minds we all feared they were destined for this season.
But I never stopped following the team, always catching an episode of Baseball Tonight even if it meant staying up for the midnight showing. And what I noticed is that the Braves were rarely discussed while they floated in fourth place several games under .500. But since July 1, the Braves have been one of the hottest teams in baseball, winning 8 of 10 prior to the All-Star break to get back into contention and winning 12 of 16 since to put themselves 4.5 games up in a division where no other team has shown the ability to win consistently. Now every baseball analyst and writer is praising the work of John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox for their ability to win with a team that many considered to be the worst assembly of players in Atlanta since 1990.
