Hack was, first of all, a physical phenomenon. There were 195 pounds of him on a 5'6" frame: the height of Phil Rizzuto , only 40-45 pounds heavier. As a young man it was all muscle: a barrel-chested upper body, blacksmith arms, and bulging thighs and calves on the short, short legs that tapered to tiny feet. He wore an 18 collar and size 6 shoe. And until the liquor overmastered him, he could hit a ton. Image provided by

STAN HACK
Stats from www.baseball-reference.com
For most of the past four decades, the Cubs have been riding roughshod, but it wasn't always so. During Stan Hack's 16 years with the club, they played in four World Series, and the happy-go-lucky hot corner man was a big part of that success. He was the top lead-off batter of the 1930's, scoring at least 100 runs seven times. He was a smooth fielder, with an accurate if not shotgun arm. Stan Hack had a lifetime average of .301 and hit .348 in those World Series. He was a great bunter, and twice led the league in steals. Unlike most hitters of that era, Hack hit well to all fields. The Cubs of that era were fairly stable; first base was Charley Grimm, followed by Phil Cavaretta, both Chicago legends (Grimm managed during much of Hack's career), Billy Herman, who came up about the same time as Hack at second, Billy Jurges at short and Hack at third. This is the most schizophrenic team I have ever put together. It started out pitching with Pete, and then devolved into knuckle dragging with Hack. Unsure how to classify it, I put it in Shea. I figure I will win 76 games, but I wanted to see if you could win with Hack in center, when it was not a team loaded for monster hitting. Was Mickey Rivers a better fielder? I think NOT!

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.
