BASEBALL HALL OF FAME MEMBERS
(through 1998)
The greatest honor bestowed upon a professional baseball player is enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Just one percent (1%) of those who have played Major League Baseball have a plaque in Cooperstown. Overall, 237 of the tens of thousands of individuals who have served the game as Major and Negro League players, managers, executives, pioneers and umpires have a permanent residence in the Hall of Fame Gallery. The Members have been elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America and specially appointed committees, such as the Veterans' Committee, and the now-defunct Committee on the Negro Leagues. Comments Are baseball arbitrations done by only one guy? For some reason, I always thought it was a panel of three - one chosen by the team, one by the player/agent, and one upon whom they could mutually agree. I don't know why I think this, though. Maybe it's how my dad's union works, or something. Posted by: John Y. at February 13, 2004 12:13 PM Elsewhere on all-baseball.com All-Baseball.com, part of MVN 19 to 21

More from Martin O'Malley

The 2002 World Series has dwindled to a state championship between two of the most undesirable, disliked teams in major league baseball. This isn't the first all-California World Series, but no match-up has ever been as lacklustre as this one. Boo! Audio CBC Radio's Lorna Jackson talks to Martin O'Malley about the 2002 World Series just before the opening pitch. From The World This Weekend (October 19, 2002 - Runs 5:44) I'll be watching, of course, but only to keep an eye on the grotesqueries. We have a team, the Anaheim Angels, whose owners desperately want to unload the franchise but can't find a buyer, even though they've halved the asking price to about $130 million. We have the San Francisco Giants with two of the most personality-challenged players in the history of baseball: Barry Bonds and Kenny Lofton. Louis Cauz, author of

Beer My Way archives Nexus Hom e Homeruns and Hops
Although it's currently the dead of winter, I've decided to write about beer and baseball for several reasons. One is that thinking about the subject makes summer seem much closer. Of course, another is the close relationship that has always existed between America's two National Pastimes, and finally, to explain why Willie Mays has a lot in common with America's micro breweries. More about that later!
Modern minor league baseball offers the baseball fan and beerfan more than just the affordibility of it's tickets, the accesibility of it's parks and proximity to the action on the field. In the past few years I've had the pleasure of drinking Flying Fish at the Camden Riversharks, Sam Adams and Anchor Steam at the Newark Bears, Cricket Hill at the New Jersey Jackals and a whole gamut to chose from at the Somerset Patriots, Trenton Thunder and New Jersey Cardinals. These wonderful beers are a far cry from the watery slop one usually finds at major league parks.
Beer and Baseball causes us to laugh. As a youngster, I remember reading about the aforementioned Chris Von der Ahe who intoduced the "German Disturber" to the game. This was simply a barrel of his beer positioned in foul territory near third base. The idea was that any man who safely reached third could help himself to a stein of the refreshing brew, ostensibly to motivate runners to stretch doubles into triples, or to steal third base. Unfortunately, the disturber also had a damning effect: batters who had a clear shot at an inside-the -park homerun would often err on the side of caution and stop at third, and runners who were already there wouldn't think of tagging up after a fly ball in order to avoid a double play. The "Disturber", which didn't last long, evidentally had more influence on the couse of the game than did the third base coach!

Climbing Miss Sophie – Set in New York City in the ‘50s, this sensitive film is about a 10-year-old orphan, Tomo, and his relationship with big Old Miss Sophie. In exchange for a roof over his head, he will help her up the five flights of stairs each day to their apartment. But worsening illness threatens Miss Sophie, and even Tomo’s friendship is helpless against it. String Worms at Budd Terrace – Joan O’Sullivan has Lewy Body Disease, a form of dementia. Or does she? Could the ‘string worms’ the doctors call hallucinations be real, rapidly infecting the facility where Joan, the filmmaker’s mother, lives? This film—riveting and intimate, sometimes humorous, sometimes sad—is a story about life, love, family, and dementia.

Columnists Gene Therapy: Hacking with records Friday, June 20, 2003 Roger Clemens' acute case of milestones appeared to resolve itself this week when the famously truculent Texan nearly pitched a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Like that would count, a no-hitter against the Devil Rays. Seems The Rocket has never pitched a no-hitter, so that would have been a third pseudo-major milestone to go with his 300th win and his 4,000th strikeout, both coming last week and both very serious accomplishments, but neither being unprecedented. A healthy historical list of pitchers have won 300 times, and Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton struck out more than 4,000 batters, which is not worth the examination implied by the famous call to the Post-Gazette sports department that went, "Hi, um, I know that Nolan Ryan struck out 5,714 guys, but who were they?" Anyway, with Clemens fever returned to double digits and with mounting evidence that we are not to experience another 70-homer season by someone of questionable metabolics, the chances that we'll see something this summer that we've never seen before aren't favorable.

by Brad Stratton Imelda Marcos and Hack Wilson, Sikorsky helicopters and curve balls, American yarn vs. Australian yarn. All of these were part of the rookie season for UWMÕs Professor Baseball at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers. The professor is preparing for a second season, which starts April 5 with a match-up between the Brewers and World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. Once each game, the animated Professor Baseball appears on the giant scoreboards high above center field in Miller Park to ask a baseball-related question or offer a little-known fact that relates to the game. Each item is linked to a school, department, or program at the university. An archive of all questions and comments delivered during the 2001 season can be found at the professorÕs Web site The between-innings scoreboard feature is just one part of UWMÕs marketing relationship with the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club. Other parts of the agreement include:
  • A 3-by-72-foot black-and-gold sign on the back wall of the visitorsÕ bullpen just beyond the fieldÕs right-center-field wall. It is not only visible from most of Miller ParkÕs 42,000 seats, but it also is frequently seen on television when home runs are hit at or near it. Several small dents in the sign show it has been a popular target for batters.

Baseball Mogul Rewrites The Record Books
March 24, 2005
Using the Baseball Mogul physics engine, we have adjusted the statistics of the last 20 years to those that we believe would have occurred without the use of steroids by major league hitters. In making these adjustments we have followed the general consensus of media and researchers who believe that steroid use became a measurable concern in the mid-1980s, and that the effects of steroids reached a peak between 1998 and 2004.
