BEER DRINKERS AND HELL RAISERS
HACK WILSON
He was all muscle: a barrel-chested powerhouse with blacksmith arms, and bulging thighs and calves on short legs that tapered to tiny feet. He had an 18" collar and size #6 shoe. Hack Wilson was a physical oddity in baseball and a physical phenomenon. Sporting 195 pounds on a 5'6" frame he was the prototype for a slugger in the new age of the lively ball.....a man who swung first and asked questions later! A man who was the perfect fit for the roaring twenties when excess were never considered to be too excessive, he was a man of extremes. There are two reasons for his nickname......one is that it was from George Hackenschmidt, an old-time wrestler, or from a resemblance to Lawrence H. "Hack" Miller, a player who preceded him in on the Cubs. Either way, the name was a perfect fit. The Cubs got Wilson from the Giants because of a clerical error. Sent by the Giants to their farm team at Toledo (AA) he was acquired in a postseason draft by the Cubs for $5,000. Giant protests to Commissioner Landis were denied and from that point on Wilson's career went on a rollercoaster ride. Batting cleanup in the Cubs' awesome lineup of hitters, he became one of the NL's most feared hitters.

Lewis Robert "Hack" Wilson April 26 November 23 ) was an American center fielder in Major League Baseball from to . He is best known for his record-setting 191- RBI season of . He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Wilson was a true rags-to-riches story. He grew up in the Pennsylvania steel mill town of Ellwood City. During his career, Hack Wilson played for the New York Giants Chicago Cubs Brooklyn Dodgers , and Philadelphia Phillies . Wilson eclipsed the 100-RBI mark in 6 seasons. He set the National League single-season record for home runs with 56 in 1930 that stood until 1998 when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa both surpassed it, with 70 and 66 respectively. During the 1930 season, Wilson also drove in 191 runs, a mark that remains one of the most untouchable MLB records. (For years, record books gave the total as 190, until research in the showed that an RBI credited by an official scorer to Charlie Grimm actually belonged to Wilson.) Amazingly enough, during the 1930 season, he never recorded a grand slam Although his career was brilliant, it was short. He finished his career having played only 1,348 games with a lifetime

THERE ARE SOME ONE-SEASON, MAJOR LEAGUE HITTING RECORDs THAT HAVE withstood concerted challenges over the years, and at this point in time still seem virtually unattainable. Rather than mention such apparently out-of-reach, individual records involving the most triples in one year (36 by Chief Wilson of the Pirates in 1912) or most runs scored (177 by Babe Ruth in 1921) or longest hitting streak (56 games by Joe DiMaggio in 1941), let's focus on one other batting mark that reflects amazing consistency over the long haul, not by one but by two players on the same team.

Henry Benjamin "Hank" Greenberg January 1 September 4 ), nicknamed "Hammerin' Hank", was an American player in Major League Baseball Born in New York City , Greenberg was not the first Jewish man to play major-league baseball. But by the end of his career he had become by far the best Jewish player ever, and the first major Jewish star. Only Sandy Koufax has had similar success among Jewish players in the 50 years since Greenberg has retired. Greenberg was subject to the most vicious ethnic taunting seen in the sport prior to the arrival of Jackie Robinson in , Greenberg nevertheless became a first-rank ballplayer and an icon among Jews in the United States. How Hack Wilson ‘Fouled Away’ his baseball career
March 26, 2000
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us In 1930, Chicago Cub Hack Wilson enjoyed one of baseball’s finest seasons ever, driving in 191 runs while hitting 56 homers, setting new records. Yet four years later Wilson was out of professional baseball. He died penniless at age 48 and few baseball fans today remember Hack Wilson. Local sportswriter Clifton Parker remembered Wilson. Parker has written a book called "Fouled Away: The Baseball Tragedy of Hack Wilson" (McFarland, $29.50, 2000). Parker grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa., in the same part of the country as Wilson. A graduate of Penn State and the University of Florida, Parker has always been a baseball fan. He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, a group devoted to statistical and historical research. "I could never hit a curve so I became a writer," he said. He ran his own business in Davis for several years, Parker Public Relations, and wrote some fantasy fiction on the side. "You find a link between fantasy and baseball," he said in a statement few coaches would dispute.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Trivia PDA View Full Version : Revised and corrected records 04-28-2002, 09:12 PM In the past few years I've discovered a number of MLB records once thought to be official, have since been revised and corrected. Some examples:
1. Nap Lajoie's Batting Average in 1901: changed from .422 to .426
2. Heinie Zimmerman was once credited (after the fact) with having had a "Triple Crown" season in 1912, but later data found that he did not lead the NL that year in RBI hence, no Triple Crown!
3. Nap Lajoie is now found to have a higher BA than Ty Cobb in the 1910 season (hence only 11 batting crowns for Cobb instead of 12?). Also, this changes Cobb's record career hits total (prior to Rose) from 4191 to either 4190 or 4189. (I'm not sure which is now preferred!)
4. Hack Wilson's MLB record of 190 RBI was later revised UPWARDS to 191.
Do you know of any other well-known hitting or pitching records which have since been revised either up or down? (This is a QUERY. I don't know the "answer"!) cubbieinexile 04-28-2002, 09:38 PM

The Commissioner 06-13-2003, 10:26 PM Hack Wilson, it's not even close. Hammerin Hank 06-13-2003, 10:49 PM Hopefully in a few years I'll have the honor of adding Corey's name to the list. The Commissioner 06-13-2003, 11:23 PM I can see him making this list before too long, but I can't see Corey overtaking Hack for #1. ndistops 09-16-2004, 08:30 PM Well it's been over a year since anyone posted on this thread, but ok. I also voted Hack, he has one of the most underrated records in baseball, 191 RBIs in 1930 IN 154 GAMES. Maybe someone will get 192 someday, but in 154 games? I doubt it.
I too look forward to Corey making this list, and at this time, I think is the sky's the limit for Patterson. ElHalo 09-16-2004, 08:52 PM

ONE MORE INNING AN ARTICLE FOR BASEBALL GURU: MARCH: FROM ONE MORE INNING FORGOTTEN PLAYERS: E RNEST SHOR E BABE RUTH stared at Owens in disbelief, waved his hands into the air, and then charged the mound, screaming at the top of his voice. He pushed Owens back several times and then emphasized his feel- NEVER THIS was 65 wins and 42 losses with a 2.45 ERA. He did have a 3-1 record in World Series play. He lasted for seven years and died in 1980 and is forgotten for the most part by the baseball world. Well, maybe not. He retired and lived out his remaining days in Winston-Salem. He served as Forsyth County Sheriff and was fondly thought of by the local townspeople. When it came time to build a new Minor League ballpark there was only one name considered and so now the Winston-Salem Warthogs play in the Ernie Shore Sports Stadium. Some of the alumni who have played there you may have heard of: Wade Boggs, Cecil Cooper, Dwight Evans, Harvey Haddix, Sparky Lyle, Jim Lonborg, and Wilbur Wood. EVERY once in a while some baseball historian mentions his perfect game which is now not considered his, but that is every once in a long, long, while.
