  • Born: 30 August 1918 Birthplace: San Diego, California Died: 5 July 2002 (heart failure) Best Known As: The last major leaguer to hit .400
Williams remains the last man to hit over .400 for a complete major league baseball season. He finished the 1941 season with a .406 batting average, going 6-for-8 during a season-ending double-header to push himself over the .400 mark. Williams played for the Boston Red Sox from 1939-42 and from 1946-60. (During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. His 1952 and 1953 seasons were interrupted by his service as a Marine Corps pilot; he flew 39 combat missions in Korea.) Williams hit a home run in his last at-bat at Boston's Fenway Park, and finished his career with 521 homers and 2654 hits. He was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1966. His 1969 autobiography was titled My Turn At Bat , and his 1971 book The Science of Hitting remains a popular baseball manual. Late in life he suffered from congestive heart trouble and a series of strokes, and he died at age 83 in July of 2002.

http://www.teenink.com/Past/2003/June/Books/TedWilliams.html
T ed Williams: A Baseball Life is a biography of the famous Red Sox hitter. It traces his life from growing up in California and playing for the San Diego Padres to being traded to the Boston Red Sox,where he spent the rest of his career.
The book covers the outstanding year when he hit .406, as well as when he went off to World War II, and includes a lot of detail, maybe even too much. It can be hard to take in all the information and can even be boring at times, since it goes on and on about how Ted adjusted to different pitchers. There's nothing about his life after baseball; the narrative just ends when he retires. I'd give this book two out of four stars.
I do recommend this book to anyone who likes baseball, and wants to learn about Williams' career, but it's hard to get a sense of Williams' life beyond the statistics.

Located in Hernando, Florida in Citrus County, a few blocks from where Ted Williams himself lived during his later years, the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame is the first Museum ever dedicated, at the time, to a living athlete. While ranked as the number one tourist attraction in Citrus County, the Museum's goal is to preserve and build on the rich tradition and heritage of our national pastime baseball. The Museum's mission is one of outreach and education . The Museum could never operate but for the enormous assistance of a dedicated corps of volunteers who make all the difference. It is a true "labor of love" for the many who have helped the Museum since it first opened in February of 1994. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call Sue Colabelli at the Ted Williams Museum at 352-527-6566. What this Museum is all about is best described in Ted's own words; "Through the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame, we hope to build a lasting monument, an architectural tribute to what I think is the single most difficult thing in all of sports; hitting a baseball. We hope the Museum will become a place millions of baseball fans will visit and enjoy for generations to come. I hope you'll join us as we transform our dreams into reality." TED WILLIAMS
No one cared more about hitting than Ted Williams, and few ever did it better. In a career interrupted twice by war, Williams still managed to post incredible numbers. He was the last man to bat over .400, in 1941. He hit for power, average, and had a remarkable eye at the plate. He was the first man for whom opposing teams consistently attempted to come up with defensive schemes to stop him.

It's common knowledge that most great players fail to make great managers. With a few exceptions, this is true. Williams skippered the Senators from 1969 to 1971, following them to Texas for the '72 season. Thus, he was the first manager in Ranger history. He guided the Senators to a winning mark and a 4th place finish in 1969 (largely due to Frank Howard's slugging), but the team gradually faded over his last three years. He finished his managerial career with a .429 career mark (273-364). Like Rogers Hornsby, Williams failed to communicate well with his players, especially the pitchers, whom he dislkied. Post-Season 1946 World Series World Champion?

Walking with Ted Williams
By Phil Brooks, July 8, 2002
On the first pilgrimage to spring training my father and I made, I brought a magazine to Winter Haven with a great photograph of Ted Williams in it. I hoped to have it signed as we’d heard Williams lived in Florida and often made the trip to Winter Haven to see old friends and talk baseball. I carried the magazine for days and never saw Williams.
Then, right before the start of one day’s exhibition game, Ted Williams, age 64, in full Red Sox uniform stepped out of the dugout and strolled up the first base line to light applause. He nodded. There were maybe three-hundred people in the park and on impulse I jumped the wall and headed towards Williams. I was a teenager at the time.
"Mr. Williams!" I said.
A guard yelled at me and Ted held up a hand, "It’s okay, buddy," he told the guy.

It's nearly impossible, isn't it? Disappeared perhaps, for he loved to do that. Quietly leaving us for some deserted fishing hole. But gone completely? Why, that's impossible. He was, after all, Teddy Ballgame. The Splendid Splinter. As close to Superman as anybody from this planet who had ever put on a baseball uniform. That he could be vulnerable seemed ludicrous, though his decline in recent years had become public knowledge, surgery to reduce blockage in a neck artery beginning his slide. In our minds, he never seemed a day over 30. Tough as nails and surely able to slip right back into a batting box and hit .400 again today. The Hall of Famer played his entire magnificent career with the Boston Red Sox from 1939 through 1960. A lifetime average over those 19 years of .344, the centerpiece, of course, 1941 when he became the last major leaguer to hit over .400. He finished at .406.

TED WILLIAMS Baseball Player Williams remains the last man to hit over .400 for a complete major league baseball season. He finished the 1941 season with a .406 batting average, going 6-for-8 during a season-ending double-header to push himself over the .400 mark. Williams played for the Boston Red Sox from 1939-42 and from 1946-60. (During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. His 1952 and 1953 seasons were interrupted by his service as a Marine Corps pilot; he flew 39 combat missions in Korea.)
